I heard in speaking with a former Flying Dutchman that Hofstra may 'swallow its Pride' and return football. Anyone else hear of such an effort? Supposedly, a fairly strong alumni reaction to the decision..Maybe some alum has come up with some bucks...

I know there was a pretty solid alumni reaction.

Vast majority of the players who wanted to continue playing have already transfered...can they simply transfer back? Would their new school have to release them from their scholly???

I'd be wiling to bet it would come back in non-scholarship form and start from scratch if it were to come back at all.

That I could see...

I would imagine Hofstra would have to start fresh. I doubt anything would happen for this coming season since the conference has already changed schedules and signing day is over with. Plus, spring practice starts soon on many campuses. So, if football were to be resurrected, which I highly doubt, I think we're looking at Hofstra coming back in 2011 at the earliest.

Couldn't be DII. Hofstra is ever going to downgrade basketball, lacrosse or wrestling.

I think the only way it comes back is to come back FCS in the PFL.

This just illustrates what I (and others) have said before. If you're an administration and you are considering dropping football, you HAVE to look at what you're really doing. The best example is ETSU. Dropped it, a few years later tried to bring it back: too expensive, no conference, etc. By dropping football you are royal f'ing your program. It's gone as you knew it for many, many years. You can't take a two year break and then get back to business.

Patriot League makes sense.

They can't play Div II football with their Div I basketball program.

I haven't seen anything about this in the local newspapers.

I'd be shocked if it came back in any form anytime soon. Rabinowitz would have a lot of egg on his face. To be truthful, at no time in its FCS tenure did HU ever have a half-sizable fanbase, which was the primary reason for it being axed. Who's going to come see a club team or a non-scholly team??

It shouldn't be THAT big a deal provided that the previous coaching staff (or a preponderance thereof) is still available and willing. They MAY have to scramble to recruit or go the route USF did in starting up (i.e. spend a fall practicing with no games). The two biggest hurdles (to me) would be getting the coaching staff and recruiting.

The schollie thing shouldn't be a huge issue if Hofstra handled it like UOP did. For those players who had a schollie at the time of the collapse (naturally, I didn't), UOP honored those schollies, even for those who left to complete their eligibility elsewhere. Many of those returned and got UOP degrees on the school's dime. Unfortunately for me, that didn't work because I was a bloody walk-on with no real shot at seeing the field anyway....

Ask Davis. They supported a non-scholly (or very close to it) D-II program for years before they moved up. It wasn't just when they were whipping Sac's tail that they showed up, either.

Yes. It would correct an error made many years ago by the PL.

I dont think we will see it in any form. The entire program has been dismantled. Recruiting and hiring a new coaching staff would be a nigtmare. Who would want to risk playing or working in that environment not knowing if the program would be cancelled again.

Exactly the effort in order to restore the program would take twice the effort now then it would have been trying to keep the program afloat. This support comes to late as SD said and i also am wondering how many of these "concerned alumni" would actually attend the games

Seems like Hofstra should have investigated the PL option before completely cutting football.. if they could have cut some scholarships, maybe they could have kept the program afloat..

And they still would have had access to the playoffs with the NEC's AQ. Agreed. NEC would have been a better fit. I was actually thinking of Albany when I wrote my original post. I'm guessing both programs could have been saved had they explored options instead of just immediately axing them.
