Cal Poly football recruit Lefi Letuligasenoa (OL/DL 6'2" 285) just won the California State 285 lb Championship. He beat Cal Poly wrestling recruit, #1 ranked Drew Meulman 3-2 in the final.

The California State wrestling championship is one of the largest and toughest in the country. Wrestlers must qualify by placing at league championships to advance to the CIF sectionals. Top place winners at the sectionals then advance to the CIF Masters meet. The top place winners at the Masters Meet then advance to the State Championship. No divisional pairings. The wrestlers from the smallest schools wrestle the wrestlers from the largest schools.

Lefi is stud in three sports, football, wrestling and track and field (a top thrower in the state). Lefi also carries over a 4.0 gpa. I am really looking forward to seeing him in the Green and Gold next year.

I've ALWAYS loved recruiting O-linemen who were also excellent wrestlers. The moves/leverage/footwork learned in wrestling comes in VERY handy when dealing with defensive linemen. And to win the CALIFORNIA state title is definitely saying something...

I agree AZ. That is two State Champions now on Cal Poly's roster. Cal Poly redshirt freshman LB Grant Goebel won the 2009 Class AA Illinois 215 lb Championship.

I think about 285 lbs or so. :D

Probably helped in his recruiting that Cal Poly's OL coach is named Saga Tuitele. :thumb:

Used to have a guy that worked for me in the Navy named Peko Moanavalevale. Allegedly he was getting out and going to play football for San Jose State. Built JUST like Lefi....6', 275. Hands the size of dinner plates. Nobody fucked with him.

Yeah whenever you get guys that are big men and state champion type wrestler you are doing a good job on picking the O and D linemen. That is very impressive and we have several players from Montana that went on to be real stars on the field for us. There is a toughness about those kind of guys that is invaluable. Just off the top of my head I can think of Kroy Biermann, Andy Petek, and Lance Allen that made a real impact.

I don't know much about Petek and Allen, but Biermann I did see play and he was a beast.

Both were also beasts but Biermann had that little extra that got him to the NFL. I think that guy is gonna make the physical nature of play at Cal Poly a little more troublesome. I could be wrong but I bank on those kinds of guys being a big part of the physical nature on the Griz because I don't remember a guy with a strong wrestling backgound not being a factor on the field for us. I bet he's gonna do great things at CP. :thumb:
