A lot comments that are complimentary, but others are quite befuddled at the pick. I think they need to learn that in the NFL you have to gamble on some draft picks, and that AE would be a good player to gamble on.

Have any Panthers officials stated how they intend to use AE?

Anybody hear what his contact $$ is? I googled earlier today but couldn't find anything. Pretty sure he won't have to use that graphic design degree.

I'm more than a little surprised he went 3rd round period, even more so as a wide receiver. I think a lot of the negatives are from UNC/Dook/NCSU fans who didn't have a player to get drafted period - sour grapes. :o

To be fair, trading a second rounder next year to get AE is rather perplexing. I saw how good he is, and certainly believe he can contribute in the NFL, but the price was rather steep for a guy that is going to have to learn a new position.

As a Panthers fan, I don't mind having a talent like him, but his price tag is way to big. Second round picks are usually players that will contribute if not start right away. Drafting Armanti in the 3rd and giving up that 2nd rounder is a terrible move by the Cats. With Steve Smith at one WR spot, and big/fast WRs like Brandon LaFell, Dwayne Jarrett, Kenny Moore, and David Gettis vying for the other spot, I don't see where Edwards fits in at all. Definitely a major project player.

I heard through the grapevine that Jarrett will be cut. You forgot Charly Martin. He is a player to watch. That kid came from D2 but he could potentially be their 3rd best WR this season.

Maybe he is a project player, but with him playing the QB position, I'd guess that he knows fairly well what a WR has to do well to suceed. Add to that that he does have the arm and QB experience, along with is phenom athleticism, he opens your playbook up quite a bit for some sweet tricky plays along with the wildcat option to throw out of as well. Not saying it was a good or bad move, but he does have a lot of talents that are useful besides just a straight up WR. Hes not your ave WR that they traded that pick for. :twocents:

I was surprised to see Armanti go in the third, based on his interviews he and his agent were expecting somewhere in the 4th-5th round range. I'm not surprised to see my Panthers jump and get him - I'm still excited as hell about it. It will take him some time to adjust to wide receiver but I honestly believe he has a bright future in the league. How big his impact will be this year? who knows but at least he will have the opportunity. He's a winner and a hell of a football player and I have no doubt he will be a success at the next level. Not to mention, Dexter Jackson is with the Panthers now and it will be good to see those guys reunited.

Can't say I blame anyone for having doubts about whether spending a 2nd round next year to grab him in the 3rd round this year is a good gamble or not. As good as Edwards was at this level playing in Appy St's offense, has he ever really played the WR position? And being a former QB and just knowing what the plays are isn't really a big benefit - he'll still need to go out there and physically perform in the position. Point guards in basketball know every position but that doesn't mean your point guard is going to be able to effectively play every position - very few can effectively man the power forward spot.

On the bright side, AE will get a chance to prove people wrong - he's clearly going to be a roster player this year with what they invested in him and he'll get a shot. Only shame of it is that he may have some raw QB's throwing to him as Carolina isn't really loaded with ready players at that spot.

As one of the posters on carolinahuddle state, I'm afraid the drafting of Armanti probably increased the chances that DJ will be on the outside looking in....hope not....hope it's one of the FBS guys those posters seem to be in love with...

Id be shocked if he had much of a problem learning routes. The thing Id be more worried about is his hands. Who knows how he is at catching the ball. I think an athlete like Armanti can learn routes fine... but, receiver hands seem to be something youre born with.

Learning the routes is the easy part and he'll excel at that - being able to run the routes and make the changes while being covered, well, that's what we'll find out. And yes, the hands are the other factor. It's a risk, in that he's not proven he can do that at any level, but to some extent there are plenty of risks for anyone not a first round draft pick (and there are risks there too).

ASUG8 - Maybe no Duke or State players were drafted but UNC had a couple at least, E.J. Wilsonn, DE to Seattle and Cam Thomas, NG to San Diego. There would have been several more if a lot of jrs hadn't decided to come back for their senior seasons (Marvin Austin, Kendric Burney, Quan Sturdivant, Deunta Williams, Bruce Carter, Greg Little, etc.). Happy for AE though going to the Panthers. I can see him as a slot receiver and return guy.

He said on the radio today that the Panthers QB coach is designing some wild cat plays for him evidently. Will be interesting. Can see some interesting plays coming. A lot of people think Clausen isn't that good, Pike might be more competition at QB if Armanti impresses them on the wildcat QB plays.

AE played WR in HS, until swtiching to QB. Not that that experience is extremely valuable, but he does have a small amount of competitive experience at the position. I'm excited to see what the Panthers have in mind.

I think they traded up to get him in the 3rd because he would have been gone before they picked in the 4th at 112. I think Indy, NE or Philly would have snatched him up.

Where the Panthers really screwed the pooch was picking Clausen at 48 when Carlos Dunlap was available, baggage and all.

I understand that Clausen was the 'best dude' on the board but Dunlap on the DL would have filled the Cats biggest need. Clausen is Jake and Moore without the experience, and I suspect even AE has a better arm

It seems they are starting to warm up to him. A lot of the negativity was spewed soon after the pick when they had little idea about him.

Now they are getting more information... including stuff I hadn't heard before... like about how well he performed at the Wide Receiver position drills and how big his hands are (bigger than LaFell's who is 4 inches taller than him  ). Never knew that about Armanti. BEAST. I can't wait for football season!
