If you were nominating the best candidate from your squad, who would it be?
Payton award is an OFFENSIVE AWARD. Buchanan is the Defensive award - that will come later
For NAU, it's easy: Michael Herrick

Haha, somehow I missed the Payton part... thought it was just your team's best player. Doh!

Dayton's QB Steve Valentino. 2009 PFL offensive player of the year. 2008 All PFL as wide receiver / kick returner. May be the best overall athlete in FCS.

Valentino should definitely be on the first list of the Payton watch.

If the committee wouldn't even make Joe Flacco a finalist, what makes you think this Delaware QB will be fairly considered?

then
D J Hall - will be a JR - Oline/RG
From SCFB's Blog
OG D.J. Hall, Texas State, Jr.- It is rare to see a junior high up on preseason lists on the line, let alone two, but this year that is the case. Hall has a good body as well with tree trunk thighs, long arms, and the overall body type that NFL teams look for. He shows good strength and footwork and should only get better. He is a returning two-time All-Southland selection and was named first-team in 2009 and he still has two more years to play. Keep an eye on this young kid as he possesses the talent to become one of the best in the nation.

this guy:
losing a four year starter at QB and our top candidate really hurts. I don't think we'll have anyone put up good enough numbers for consideration.
guess if I had to throw out a name in the spirit of this thread, I'd say Gary Holliman. With a new coaching staff emphasizing the running game, he should do well. but I don't think he'll be anywhere near Payton Award Candidacy.

Um....
Well...
#2 Tirrell Rennie - JR QB
First year on campus, may not start but if he does he has the best chance out of anyone to win the award I think. He reminds me a lot of Pat White or Armanti Edwards (before you jump all over me, I'm not saying he is that good. I'm saying he reminds me of him and could be a lot like them.) He is listed at 6' 201 on the UNI roster but was listed as 5'10 185 at Ellsworth Community College.
His bio from unipanthers.com
Two-time All-America pick at Ellsworth Community College ... passed for 2,863 yards and 23 TDs, while rushing for 1,025 yards and 10 TDs as a senior ... broke school record for total offense in one game with 557 total yards (460 passing and 97 rushing) ... set the single-season total offense record with 3,888 yards ... accounted for 73 touchdowns and over 7,300 yards of total offense while setting 13 school records in a two-year span ... led the nation two years for in a row in total offense.
His ECC photo
Two photos of him from the UNI spring game

Fair point, but we got no one's else on "O" that fits the bill.

For Elon, I'd say QB Scott Riddle. He'll have to step up his game this year though. He won't have Terrell Hudgins to throw to and he has struggled in big games (3 Picks on consecutive possessions against APP). I'm not saying he'll be a likely winner, but he has the best shot from the team.

Center Austin Richard
I know that might sound odd but he is just beast and moves very well for a guy that is 6'2 320 pounds. He will be a big part of what should be a very good OL.

Pat Devlin...I don't think he has much of a chnace becuase he's a transfer and we've had two players, Andy Hall and Joe Flacco, who were both transfers and both the best Offensive weapons in the FCS who didn't win. I think Joe was votes 18th in '07.
