Can you really argue that unions single-handedly "destroyed" manufacturing here when the world's second leading exporter (Germany) has a FAR larger union presence than the US?

Every one of those union contracts was negotiated by management, ronnie. The problem, as wall street has proven, is that management is incompetent and stupid. And nice try with the highest corporate tax schtik, but that has been shot down here so many times that we won't even bother. European socialism isn't actually socialism outside of health and societal benefits. Europe experiences all the benefits of a capitalist economy. The Euro is a STRONGER currency than the Dollar. In fact, the dollar is only buoyed by oil, which is proven by the crash it experienced when OPEC tried to untether oil from the dollar. The German economy is rocketing, and if it wasn't for the fact that the entire country's about the size of North Carolina, they'd have well surpassed us by now.

Fact is - for a country of the size of most European nations, what they have works EXTREMELY well. A larger nation such as the US with a larger land mass, higher upkeep, etc.. would have a hard time emulating them. What we're doing, however, is no different from what Hawaii and Mass have done already - we're trying to compact things that can be compacted, and create a system that can better adapt to present circumstances. If we weren't one of the last nations on Earth with an influential right wing party (us and Austria are pretty much it. Most conservative parties ala UK are still left of center) we'd have given into the fact that change is necessary.

End of the day - if we all took a 1% tax increase we'd have solved most of this already. And that comes from the head of the Univ of Cambridge economics department.
