Given that the WAC extends all the way to Louisiana Tech, one possibility would be North Texas, joining the mass Texas wagon train to the west. I wonder if UTEP would be interested in going back into the WAC.

But, I think if Montana wants to join the WAC, they have to be the favorite. But, I do wonder if Montana wants it. How long would it take for them to climb to the top of the WAC and really replace Montana? Montana would be a good travel partner with Idaho.

The travel partner thing is overlooked by a lot of folks, Mike. But ironically I think the WAC would love to add TWO teams and jettison LA Tech.

NAU. Call will come any day now, unless Pac 10 grabs us first

All of us in the Big Sky would like to at least be considered for the WAC membership; I kinow I would. But face reality - none of us can afford it just now, not even Montana (they were talkng about cutting scholarships in March; they must be tight). PSU is teetering on the edge right now, with only football holding us back after three abysmal years with Motor Mouth Glanville. It'll take Burton three more years to get us back. OK, maybe two.:-) But regardless, we don't have the money for the additional scholarships and sports it would require.

Texas State, UTSA (at some point, not immediately), Montana, SacSt, Cal Poly. I did a quick: What happens to the WAC now on my site: http://www.wyonation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2869" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Interesting that your posters think TXST is no where near ready. If we're not, UTSA is lightyears away. They have basically no facilities on campus. Oh sure they have some but they're comparable to Little League venues.

People need to check their facts on what has been done on the TXST campus the past 3-4 years and by the 2011 season Bobcat Stadium will hold in or around 24K. (Phase II)

My guess is that Montana and Texas State are the two top candidates. There is a lot of talk of Sac State and PSU going based on their TV markets, but I have a tough time seeing them being able to compete with the other state teams for market share. I don't think anyone in PDX will ever really care about PSU with the Beavers and Ducks down the road and Sac State has too much competition in Califorinia. No one in Sacramento is going to care that they are playing Idaho when USC, Cal, and Stanford are also playing. Neither school will ever be a draw as long as they are in a non-BCS conference.

On a side note, if those two did leave we could beef up the Big Sky a little with SUU, UND or Cal Poly. ;)

You're right, Bearit. At PSU, we've got two Pac-10s to compete with, in a small population state, while Sac State has three, two of them in their own backyard. Bad odds. I'd like to think the "new" schools could challnege (PSU's now the biggest school in the state in terms of students) but old loyalities run deep. And TV marketers know it.

If we are talking FCS..then I think it is Texas St. They are building the football stadium and have solid support in their other sports, plus, they want to go to the FBS which is something that other schools have not 100% came out for.
I think LaTech will wake up and go to CUSA for geographic purposes which opens up another spot......

I agree with Putter. I can see the WAC going after the Texas athletes.

I also agree with Putter...I think the WAC will highly encourage LaTech to go elsewhere, and that opens up a spot for Montana. :coffee:

If they replaced Boise State with Idaho State the BSC IMMEDIATELY becomes a stronger conference than the WAC.

I wondered this on AGS as well - I'm wondering if the WAC is waiting, maybe even helping, LA Tech to find a new home before they move on expansion.

Because if LA Tech stays then the WAC will likely try to bridge the gap between the rest of the schools and LA Tech, with Texas schools. But if LA Tech goes the WAC can look at multiple options for expansion including Montana, California schools, and Texas schools.

Agreed. The WAC footprint is friggin' HUGE right now, and jettisoning LaTech would shrink it considerably and allow them to focus on somebod(ies) more centrally located...

While the WAC is NOT as bad as the Sun Belt, there is something to be said for this. That's exactly why the Big West dumped LA Tech and SW LA.

I'm PRETTY sure that the WAC footprint is considerably larger than the Sun Belt, given that Hawaii is in the WAC. :coffee: :coffee:

I don't count HI; they're like a joker. They would skew ANY conference. Compare the Sun Belt to the continental WAC, and one sees how crazy spread out the Belt is. The only conference I know of worse than the Sun Belt in this regard is the Great West with everyone from the Dakotas to Houston Baptist to the suckiest program known to man, NJIT.

In D-II, the 2 Alaska schools used to be in the same conf. with the 4 Hawaii schools :o
