If the Summit League does start football, what does that mean to the Great West Conference (GWC)? I only ask because they just invited UND to join. If UND left for the Summit, and the Summit started football, I would assume that UND would leave the football only GWC for an all-sports conference e.g. the Summit.

Would this be the end of the GWC?

Contrary to popular opinion, the GWC is NOT football-only. Sure, there are football-only associate members such as Cow Poly and the Manure Pile. But one should not forget about the bogus all-sports schools like Houston Baptist and NJIT in the Great West.

Superhornet has it right. What probably would happen is that all the Great West football only teams (basically every single football team) will be absorbed into the Summit since there is already a Cali school in the conference (Oakland). However i do see that one issue may be traveling as it would mean that since there are 4 Dakota teams that other teams in the conference would be traveling to the Dakota's twice a year which for SUU and the Cali schools would be expensive. Other then that i think it would look pretty good:
Summit League
-North Dakota State
-South Dakota State
-Southern Utah
-Western Illinois
-South Dakota
-North Dakota (when they fix their mascot issue)
-Cal Poly
-UC-Davis
Now looking at that i have to say that this would be a pretty strong conference and also qualify for an automatic bid to allow teams like Cal Poly and SUU a chance every year to get into the playoffs. Not going to lie i am kinda hoping the Summit league follows through with this as this would be a good conference to play in. Also who knows some other teams in the conference may want to add football in the near future to make it an even bigger and better conference

For the record, the Oakland University that is in the Summit League is located in Michigan, not California.

Not my intention, just saying. But since when did anyone worry about hurting anyone else's feelings around here??

NDSU and I presume SDSU would never do this:
Summit League
-North Dakota State
-South Dakota State
-Southern Utah
-Western Illinois
-South Dakota
-North Dakota (when they fix their mascot issue)
-Cal Poly
-UC-Davis
Why would they obligate themselves to the expensive trips to California and Utah?
My guess is that if any new perspective Summit League members appear to be in favor of Summit football and if the Mighty land Grants would be forced to join and leave the MVFC they might vote no on those expansion candidates.

NDSU and SDSU are long gone and happy in the MVC. It is not obvious why they would want to bolt for that.

Maybe so, but if the Summit League makes it a core sport, requiring teams to participate if they have a team, what options do they have?

Kinda arrogant for universities that were floundering in Independent Land before the Summit League gave them a home for all sports, obligating SUU and other members to expensive trips to the wastelands of the Dakotas.

Very true however if both NDSU and SDSU would want to completely transfer over to the MVC i think that could be a plausible idea, that would then leave the summit leauge at:
-Southern Utah
-Western Illinois
-South Dakota
-North Dakota (when they fix their mascot issue)
-Cal Poly
-UC-Davis
Which would be six teams and still leave a chance for an automic qualifying playoff berth. Also feel that this leauge would be alot more stable then the Great West currently is and who knows, a few teams in the Summit Leauge could add football in the near future. IUPUI for exmaple potentially has the facilities already in place to make this attempt possible (Michael K. Carrol Stadium: 12,111 or Kuntz Stadium: 5,257). Travel arrangements wouldnt be so bad either with this layout as each school would only have to make 1 trip to California and one of the Dakotas each year saving a bundle on financial costs. Also Utah Valley needs to step up their game and try to push harder for a football team because i know they want one, believe they are still looking at it from a financial standpoint and i know they have expressed intrest in staying with SUU and starting a new rivalry in Utah.
