getting approval from students? alumni? the surrounding area? It seems that's what ODU did when they wanted to add a football team and build new facilities for it. To upgrade facilities most likely means raising tuition like ODU did and then asking for donations from alumni.
btw. WHATS WITH ALL THE CAPS????

oh alright, just wondering. Anyway I think ODU did have some sponsorships but I forgot with who exactly. The school had SB Ballard do the renovation/construction Foreman FIeld...he also did the Ted Constant Convocation Center and other construction projects on campus as well so that helped with the finances. I think we also had one big sponsorship with a car dealership as well. ODU also had two big donations from families for naming rights as well.

For Weber State football wise they just got done putting in brand new Stadium lights in Stewart Stadium, not sure where the money came from, maybe thats why Weber has been playing 2 FBS games for the last 3 years.
I know this is a football forum, but Weber State's Dee Events Center is getting new lighting, new baskets, new scorers tables, new cameras and best of all........... wait for it............A BRAND SPANKING NEW JUMBOTRON WITH HD SCREENS AND EVERYTHING. ITS ABOUT TIME

In most instances, 70-80% of the funds will come from a few well heeled donors. IMHO you need to start by getting a big commitment upfront from a fat cat or two for naming rights, perks, etc. and then build around it. Usually broad based initiatives like increases in student fees and campaigns with the general alumni base and community will kick in the other 20-30%.

The University of Delaware's heads of fundraising have just returned from an instructional conference aimed at just this topic.

This will probably result in an upgrade from their most recent strategy.

We hired the president of the Gamecock Club at South Carolina to come be our AD. He immediately had an impact on getting our sponsorships heading the right direction as well as getting some of our big donors to buy into the athletic department's vision. Of course it didn't hurt that our school finally got out of the red as a whole. Nobody wants to donate money to pay off debt ... they want their resources to have a visible impact. Wants our debt was eliminated our giving began to spike.

I think we had one, but our school has issues with letting certain things go for the betterment of the university, i think the guy was local guy, but had deep pockets and i heard he wanted to name the field after his company, and i thik he was gonna pay a couple of million but i heard we denied him becuase the widow of the man who the stadium is named after said no, and the same thing happened when we tried to add former coach willie jeffries name on the stadium to make it similar to wat alabama has in bryant-denny stadium, but ours would jeffries-dawson stadium...but im just tryna get the ball rolling u know, cuz after seeing after seeing these facilities im just like were we left back in time
