The 2009 numbers are out for all college athletic programs and I just wanted to share the various revenues for the Big South programs with football teams. There is a lot of disparity among our Big South teams. Gardner-Webb fans really need to step it up and get us into the $10,000,000 + range

Liberty - $23,670,640
Stony Brook - $23,309,566
Coastal Carolina - $15,050,552
VMI - $10,096,137
PC - $9,923,942
Gardner-Webb - $8,843,078
Charleston Southern - $8,434,568

Take these revenues with a grain of salt. There is not uniform way of reporting revenues. For example, a lot of schools include in athletic revenue the amount of money the University reimburses the athletic department for expenses. For most FCS schools, the vast majority of revenues are actually just expenses reimbursed by the university.

The NCAA website breaks all of those numbers down pretty well for you. The site shows expenses and revenues.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

it doesn't break down the so-called "revenues". That's why they are for the most part completely inaccurate.

For example, Stony Brook has expenses of $22,639,519.

They have actual allocable revenues (e.g. ticket sales, sponsorhips, guarantee games, etc..) of $4,677,716. The remaining so-called "revenue" is not revenue at all. Its merely a reimbursement from the University's general operating funds or from an endowment of some sort.

So the school does not make $23,309,566. It actually probably spends around $18 million net each year.

The expense figures are a good measuring stick, but even those numbers aren't great. There isn't uniformity in how certain expenses are allocated. For example, Stony Brook has stadium expenses. Are those expenses allocated to the sports that use the stadium? Or are they not allocated at all? Each school does it differently.

Does my above post make more sense now?

And just an additional point of clarity - the NCAA doesn't run the site. The Department of Education does. Each schools is required to report their numbers, but like I said there is no uniform system of reporting.

Danefan, Didn't mean to step on any toes here. Maybe the better way to word my original post is this is approximately how much each college program is spending on their athletics programs.

I don't think you can look at it as "losing money." If you were operating it as a business where breaking even or making a profit is crucial for survival, then it would be an issue, but most schools understand that college athletics is an investment in the total college experience, as well marketing and community outreach. Plus there are many hidden benefits as well as income that filters in to the university which doesn't show up in the actual athletics revenues and expenditures.

My apologies as well. Its hard to be informative on these boards without sounding like a "know-it-all" and that is definitely not my intention.

These numbers have been thrown around for years with the misunderstanding that they some how represent the true revenues generated by FCS schools.I agree with you 100% that this is really the only visibility into what our schools are spending on their athletic programs. I think we're on the same page. :thumb:

I'm pretty sure it's Pamela Zinszer, March 1974 Playmate of the Month.

I found the cover looking for the name of the actress who played Michael Corleone's Sicilian wife Apollonia in the Godfather (Simonetta Stefanelli). She has a pictorial in that edition.

The pose is timelessly hot to me.
