I hate that everyone calls them 'cal'. there are a dozen cals. it is arrogance and self-assured superiority that keeps that one from being called what it is over the others.
but they won big and my fury is boundless. fellow FCS brethren, help me wallow.

In what way?
Outside of California, only one 'Cal' is recognized - the one in Berkeley. The others are called UC (insert name of location here, Berkeley may also be called that way).

Yeah even the mighty Bruins are referred to as UC-Los Angeles. I assume the reasoning is that Berkley is the flagship U of the California System. Just like Alabama-Tuscaloosa and Alabama-Birmingham. A little off-topic but when the talk of combining UD and DSU into a UofDel system, UD would still be UD and DSU would become either UD-Dover or UD-Central. In the way that Maryland State became UM-Eastern Shore.

I believe the UC's and Cal's are different systems. Or maybe it's the State's and UC's are different?
And for what it's worth I always refer to "Cal" as Berkley. They aren't known as "Cal" in anything other than the athletics world. Every other realm, including academics, they are "Berkley".

Berkeley is the flagship of the UC. They are deserving of the Cal moniker.
The CSU has no flagship. Even though some campuses claim they are the flagship. Sacramento because it is in the state capitol, SJSU because they are the oldest and SDSU because they play the highest level of football (in their minds).

Come on GMC, you know CAL POLY is the flagship school of the state university system.

As a native Californian U.C. Berkley has always been known as California or Cal for short and has always been considered as the flagship of the state’s public higher education system. Davis was started as a agricultural extension station and was not recognized as a independent university until 1959. Even today there are barnyard animals on campus (not just talking about the coeds!) The debris that this livestock leaves behind and the aroma that permeates the town has led us, their neighbors to the east to refer to them as U.C. Dungpile, The Manure Pile or U.C.F.E. (U.C. Farm Extension).
Slostang the CSU system has no “flagship” . If you think Poly is the flagship I would advise you to explain it to Fresno when you play the Bulldogs! By the way good luck this season especially against the Bulldogs and Dungpilers!

Don't know if this helps, but when I took one of those online tests where you name all the members and mascots of the various conferences, I failed the Pac-10 test because I forgot Cal existed. The only other BCS member that gave me trouble was Iowa State.

Weren't there rumors going around about CP trying to make the switch to the UC system a while back?

UC Davis is the only acceptable term for our campus. Even though we may occasionally call ourselves the California Aggies and use the CA logo, the campus has never used the term Cal Davis.
Cal Poly is the only state school with the academic gonads to join the UC system. Take a look at the test scores and entering GPA of its students. Cal likes to think of themselves as something special and they are until Stanford comes in higher on the US News ratings. I would place Cal and Stanford as academic equals. UCLA is a step down and then UC San Diego, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine. The next tier is UC Riverside, UC Santa Cruz and lastly UC Merced. This says nothing about their respective sports teams. These are all research institutions. The California State University system is more about teaching than research which isn't bad in any way.

Yeah but UC merced is also only what, 5 years old? And UC Davis has no business calling themselves Cal, though they do have a sweet outdoor pool on campus

Which Cal Poly? You guys can't even settle on the name. One is California Polytechnic State University, and the other is California State Polytechnic University. What's up with that?
Just kidding....
