- NConf Record: 2-6
Overall: 5-10
vs. FCS: 1-0
Overall: 1-0
Best Performance: (#5) Montana 30, (#11) Cal Poly 28 - Senior RB Andrew Schmidt gets his first 100 yard game and also blocks a punt to help the Griz win a rare game they weren't expected to win.
Worst Performance: Montana St. 10, (FBS) Kansas St. 69 - Outgained by 250 yards, the Bobcats get an abrupt crash course in the differences between a lousy DII team & a solid BCS school.
Most Surprising Result: Sacramento St. 20, (FBS) Colorado St. 23 - If the lowly Hornets can nearly upset an FBS school, does that mean they can do the unthinkable and challenge for a Big Sky title?

Best Performance: (#22) Central Arkansas 24, UC Davis 21 - Despite WR Chris Carter's monster receiving performance, the Bears get by a solid Aggie team.
Worst Performance: Northwestern St. 6, (FBS) Baylor 51 - The Demons make the Big XII doormat look like a bowl team.
Most Surprising Result: Texas St. 36, (FBS) SMU 47 - Though the Mustangs aren't at all a good FBS team yet, Texas State still made a much better showing than last week.

Best Performance: (#21) South Dakota St. 40, (#14) Youngstown St. 7 - I don't think anyone will doubt the Dakota States' adjustment to the MVC after this schlacking.
Worst Performance: Missouri St. 27, (DII) Washburn 35 - If this is what the upstart & improved Bears look like, maybe they'd be better off returning to the usual low expectations.
Most Surprising Result: (#14) Youngstown St. 7, (#21) South Dakota St. 40 - The school that went to 6 national title games in 10 years was outgained by 301 yards against a conference newbie!? I think we need that classic Vince Lombardi "What the hell is going on here!?" clip right about now.

vs. FCS: 2-1
Overall: 4-2
Best Performance: Jacksonville St. 45, Alabama A&M 18 - Though QB Ryan Perriloux's numbers weren't overly impressive, the Gamecocks still dominate the Bulldogs.
Worst Performance: (#24) Eastern Kentucky 13, (FBS) Western Kentucky 37 - The Hilltoppers are FBS now & the Colonels are not the same team as last year, but you'd think EKU wouldn't roll over and die in the second half of a rivalry game like they did here.
Most Surprising Result: Austin Peay 20, (#16) Georgia Southern 34 - After last week's debacle for the Governors, they rebounded well in actually leading Georgia Southern at the end of 3 quarters.
Tomorrow: the rest of the playoff conferences.

Overall: 6-2
Best Performance: Holy Cross 42, (#4) Massachusetts 45 - A solid effort for the second straight year, but the Crusaders again couldn't stop the UMass offense.
Worst Performance: Bucknell 48, Duquesne 42 - Yeah, the Bison won, but when you lead 48-7 and then give up 5 unanswered TD passes in the last quarter-and-a-half, it doesn't feel like a win anymore.
Most Surprising Result: Colgate 23, Coastal Carolina 19 - The Raider win wasn't surprising, but the way it happened certainly was: scoring 3 unanswered touchdowns in the last 10 minutes including a TD pass on a botched field goal attempt as time expired.

Best Performance: (#15) New Hampshire 28, (FBS) Army 10 - The Wildcats actually win a game on the strength of their defense, holding the now run-heavy Black Knights to 264 yards and forcing 4 fumbles.
Worst Performance: Rhode Island 0, Fordham 16 - Fordham is one of the better teams in the Patriot League, but rushing for minus-26 yards is still pretty pathetic.[/i].
Most Surprising Result: (#3) Richmond 0, (FBS) Virginia 16 - I thought the Spiders would win, but the Cavs proved to be better than they showed against USC.

Worst Performance: Howard 7, Georgetown 12 - The Bison scored halfway through the first quarter, but couldn't score again as they lost the inaugural DC Cup.
Most Surprising Result: Hampton 31, (#12) Southern Illinois 37 - QB Herbert Bynes threw for 403 yards and WR Larry Warner caught 19 balls, but the Pirates couldn't overcome 5 turnovers and a Saluki kick return TD in this upset bid.

Worst Performance: Western Carolina 0, (FBS) Florida St. 69 - Catamounts outgained by 385 yards and thoroughly dominated by the 'Noles.
Most Surprising Result: (#16) Georgia Southern 34, Austin Peay 20 - Although Austin Peay is better than their Fargo Dome showing, you wouldn't have thought the Eagles would need three 4th. quarter touchdowns to put this one away.

Overall: 0-3
Best Performance: (#11) Cal Poly 28, (#5) Montana 30 - The offense cooked as usual and the defense got 6 sacks, but the Mustangs better fix their special teams if they want to make a serious playoff run.
Worst Performance: North Dakota 31, (DII) St. Cloud St. 17 - This may not look too bad on the surface, but the Huskies went 1-7 in the North Central Conference and lost to the Sioux by 45 last year.
Most Surprising Result: (#11) Cal Poly 28, (#5) Montana 30 - If there ever was a game that proved special teams are crucial, this was it. Cal Poly outgained Montana by 105 yards but mediocre kick coverage, 2 missed field goals, and 2 punt miscues cost the Mustangs the game.

Worst Performance: Arkansas Pine-Bluff 0, (DII) Henderson St. 34 - What's worse than giving up 83 points? Losing 34-0 to a DII team, that's what.
Most Surprising Result: Texas Southern 10, (FBS) Arkansas St. 83 - Giving up 670 yards & 83 points to a Sun Belt team is always surprising, even for Texas Southern.

Two caveats to your Sky breakdown:
1. I'm not exactly sure that K-State is a "solid" FBS program. While certainly above the calibre of the typical FCS program, K-State has never been consistently good. If one accepts MY assessment over yours, that INCREASES the slam on the Kitties.
2. Thanks for the props, but it's still early. While we expect to beat Weber and PSU, after that it starts getting dicey. We have an injury problem at running back, and our next road opponent is NAU. We have a history of winning there, but that history is nothing like a definite. I'm the most optimistic of the bunch at SacBuzz, and even I don't expect to beat Montana until at least NEXT year. If anyone other than Montana is going to take the title, they're going to have to beat Montana head-to-head. I just don't think anyone's going to pull that off this year.
Overall, though, you have some very insightful things to say. Thank you very much.

Winton had the best game by far of the weekend...but Bynes was right up there with him. Hampton made our conference look good, while Howard made us all look bad. An under-the-radar stat of our game...DSU's 220 yards rushing. The Kent St game is starting to look a bit interesting now

No kidding, I had heard enough good things to keep an eye on Mo St at the start of this season. I, of course, know nothing about Washburn but even losing to a good DII school is not a good thing.
Any scoop or did MoSt just play badly.
