EWU's red turf creates buzz

The debut of red turf at Eastern Washington University on Saturday figures to be similar - bizarre, mesmerizing and surreal all wrapped together. It will be hard for me or anybody to take the eyes off it, but there will be no stopping the texting, tweeting and emailing about it.

The national spotlight that Eastern Washington sought after it installed red SprinTurf this summer at newly named Roos Field will reach its height when Big Sky Conference kingpin Montana rolls into Cheney for an incredible early season showdown. Considering the sixth-ranked Grizzlies have won at least a share of 12 straight conference titles, and reached the FCS championship in each of the past two seasons, the 18th-ranked Eagles would turn the race upside down with a victory in the conference opener for both teams.

By going red, Eastern Washington hopes to get the boost that Boise State has enjoyed with its one-of-a-kind blue turf. The former Big Sky member Broncos went 63-2 at home in the 2000s - the highest home winning percentage in the nation during the decade.

Opponents are especially distracted when Boise State players wear all-blue uniforms on the blue turf. Eastern Washington will wear all-red uniforms on Saturday.

They should have to wear all black. Period. I'm not speaking any more on this subject. Mainly because I, as well as a shit load of others are tired of hearing about it. Play the game, who gives a fuck about the field.

I'm sure the team will wear all black and tell everyone to stop talking about the red turf just to appease you Willie. You're welcome. :thumb:

Now you know how we feel. In all seriousness, though. I don't think it matter what color uniforms they come out in. I'm not buying into the home field advantage thing, yet. It's gunna come down to X's and O's and not the color of the field or the uniforms.

I'll admit it. That looks pretty cool. Of course I may change my mind after I see football played on it.

Yea, the field looks okay, but when you add the red unis it's a little much. I don't think you should be allowed to wear uniforms that match the turf.

So Michigan State, Sac State, Portland State et. al have to change their uni's? :coffee:

Yes.

Well, Michigan State can burn in hell...but the others, YES.

Nope. I think there's a big difference. EWU's unis MATCH the turf almost exactly. I can imagine a QB going to his second progression having a really difficult time spotting a defenders. None of the "green" schools match the grass exactly. If you can show me a school picture that causes the f***show in my brain like the bottom one above, I'll agree with you.

The field alone doesn't look "that" bad, but when it has all of those red jerseys on it in that picture...wow.

Why didn't EWU spend some money to fix up the stadium and make it look more respectable first? Those visitor side bleachers make it look horrible.......

Yea, I've actually grown to like the field. I think it looks better than the Boise blue.

I don't know if I've grown to like it, but with all of the pictures of it posted here I've become "numb" to it.

However, after seeing it with red jerseys on it, I still hate it.

We know.

We don't have the $ to do major renovations like that. The field was all from private donations. I doubt people are going to donate millions to build more seating when we can't even fill what we have. :ohno:
