Just Curious...What constitutes a young team?

Post by leeshajo »

I keep seeing posts saying that the Poster's team of choice is very young this year... what constitutes a young team?

I just went and looked Saturday against SIU, South Dakota State started (giving my own highly scientific, or not, weighting scale of 1 pt for true freshman, 2 pt for Redshirt Freshman, 3 for sophs, 4 for juniors and 5 for Seniors)….

## OFFENSE
(RF) 76 Witzmann, Bryan
(RF) 65 Parker, Alex
(SR) 60 McKnight, Ryan
(JR) 74 Buchner, Zach
(SO) 67 Fick, Jon
(SR) 87 Cochart, Colin
(RF) 23 Hubert, Brandon
(So) 2 Kool, Tyrel
(SO) 5 Rollin, Aaron
(SO) 4 O'Brien, Thomas
(SR) 30 Minett, Kyle
____________________
34 pts/3.1 ave (or Sophomore status team)

## DEFENSE
(JR) 54 Bowers,Zacharia
(SR) 94 Fischer, Brian
(SO) 52 Mink, Andy
(JR) 46 Steffen, Jake
(JR) 48 Kool, Dirk
(JR) 45 Lien, Mike
(SR) 39 Domino, Derek
(JR) 8 Jackson, Darryl
(SR) 7 Jeske, Corey
(JR) 22 Wise, Anthony
(SR) 21 Brodie, Cole
_____________________
47 pts/4.3 ave (or Junior/Senior Status team)

as a whole we totaled 81 pts/ 3.7 average...

So how does that compare with your team? If you care to, take your starting roster from your last game and figure it out... and share... I am curious what the average ends up being. Thanks in advance.

BTW... I know this will mean nothing other than a number but I am curious.

I'm not going to go through all of that work...I may later...or Jay may beat me to it.

However, I can tell you we only have something like 6 seniors on the two deep at UNI

I looked at my Bears starting roster only to realize that most of the time it WASN'T the actual kids that played during the game but rather those "starters" just started and were quickly replaced. :ugeek: Every call I heard was "freshman" this or "sophmore that" . I wonder how much time each "starter" actually played. :?

This looked like an interesting theory to me until I ran into the same problem you did. Between trying to fit kids into new positions, injuries, attrition, etc. The preseason starter and what is playing now is really different. Where do you start and end?

FB - Mitchell (Fr)
WR - Gregory (Jr)
WR - Allen (Sr)
TE - Jordan (So)
LT - Browne (So)
LG - Hall (Fr)
C - Chinyoung (Sr)
RG - Almanza (Jr)
RT - Stewart (Sr)
Total: 39 Avg: 3.5

Defense:
DE - D. Williams (Jr)

DT - Narcisse (So)
DE - S. Williams (Sr)
LB - Chatman (Sr)
LB - Ray (Jr)
LB - Coleman (Sr)

FS - House (Sr)
SS - Wells (Sr)
Total: 45 Avg: 4.1
Special Teams:
K - Griswold (Fr)
P - Duran (Jr)
Total: 4 Avg: 2

Team Total: 86 Avg: 3.5 (Southern has played over 20 freshman in most games and many of the senior starters don't have experience and when you add a new coach to the mix that equals a 2-4 record)
Edit: had to make a correction due to bad math

I used the starters from Southern's last game, they play more than the reserves and those are the guys on the field at crunch time (which is a rare occasion at Southern )

On the GSU coaches show Monken stated that against Chatty this past Saturday GSU sometimes had 5 true FR on the field on defense and 3 true FR on the field on offense. GSU only starts 3 SR's total on both sides of the ball combined so IMO that qualifies as young, when you have 3 times as many true FR playing as SR's.

Portland State starters average out to 3.5=sophomore/junior. Interestingly, our Oline is solid sophomore (3.0) and the backfield is solid junior. I'd guess that the best players start regardless of class or age. We have a new coach, new offense, new defence. I suspect that that means we play slightly younger - but who knows?

TXST Depth Chart - 10/16/10

Offense
Freshman - 2
RS Freshman - 3
Soph - 1
RS Soph - 1
Junior - 9
Senior - 8

Defense
Freshman - 1
RS Freshman - 7
Soph - 1
RS Soph - 3
Junior - 6
Senior - 6

Special Teams - not otherwise counted
K/PK/P
RS Soph - 1
Soph -1
Junior - 1

So
True Freshman - 3
RS Freshman - 10
True Sophomores - 3
RS Sophomores - 5
Juniors - 16
Seniors - 14

Overall avg 3.75 soph avg???

Interesting...because if you took the jr/sr combined, that averages out to 58% of the (starting)team but this system makes us younger.
I'll let someone else do the rest of the math :D

I think you could also throw some points in there, such as 1 for each returning starter. There are seniors who never start until their last year, while there are Juniors who have started every year. A young team is usually termed that because they lack experience.

Experience is everything...just ask my first girlfriend

using expierence that would make Southern even younger, the QB threw 5 passes before the season, the HB was a backup QB until last season when he became the backup RB/wildcat QB, both receivers were little used backups. Only returning starters were on the line. As for Defense it's a pretty similar situation. what a season...............

Now you're getting into messing with my head. Obviously the RS and true freshman have no experience and even some of the sops, but we have sophs with 2L and seniors with none (as starters) That's a can of worms I don't want to open.
(in other words....too much time to go into researching/doing)

One obvious correlation - youth and mistakes. Both PSU and Weber are at the bottom of the conference in fumbles and penalties, and both have "young" teams, playing a lot of freshmen and sophomores. It's going to make for an interesting game this weekend. May the least fumbles win!

In what context? Most of our dropped passes, muffed plays and fumbles have been by our experienced players (jrs/srs with 3-4 yrs on the field) like Dillard, Bush, Griggs...it's hard to watch :ohno:
