Would you rather...part zwei

If you don't know what zwei is....to bad.

Going off of Chris's poll I wondered would you rather cheer for:
1. A team that is consistently pretty damn good, but can't seem to win a title...thus a major let down at the end of every season (ie UNI)

2. A team that won a national titles years ago, but hasn't really come all that close since, maybe once or twice. Still a solid program, but a shell of what it once was (ie: GSU or YSU)

3. A team that just sucks. You know they are going to suck, anything over 2 or 3 wins is a great season (ie Towson or Indiana State

4. A team that usually has a lot of hype heading into the season, only to fall flat on it's face leaving the fans looking for excuses and looking towards next season by November 1st. (ie: Illinois State, Missouri State)

I'm not giving an option for teams like App State, Montana, UD, etc... that are in the title game quite a bit and have titles recently. Although Montana is coming close to the being able to fit into the UNI category with choking when they get to the big game. ;)

You forgot the Illinois St. option. AKA have a fair amount of hype heading into the season and expect to compete for the MVFC title then struggle to .500 as you realize the team just isn't what everyone thought. Then repeatedly complain to anyone that will listen about how much of a dump Hancock Stadium is. Then by November 1st, everyone is saying "wait until next year."

...being a Cubs fan kind of came out at the end of that. Voted for the first option. Enjoyed that game last year, not so much the payback this year.

That would have been a good answer...ISU and Misery State are good examples of that.

I went with option 1. Your team is constantly in the mix, and there is always hope that "this is the year". With option 2, you're stuck with dreams of the past--and you probably jump to "maybe next year" by game 6. Option 3, you're left with "maybe next coach".

For me this really is a toss up between 1 and 3.

I get it every year with UNI, the Vikings, the Twins, Michigan, etc... There are many weekends where I wish i didn't like sports, because there would never be a weekend that sucks because every team I like loses. That leaves option 3 very appealing at times.

That's actually a tough choice. SIU has been like UNI in the past few years (though more like ISU this year) and it's tough. Being as close as I was to getting to see a game in Chattanooga in 2008 really sucked. I respect YSU because, even though they've had a rough few years, they still get 17k to their games, that being a product of such a long streak of success in the last couple decades. SIU hasn't had that successful long stretch until the last 6 years, so the program can't afford to have a down season like this more than once. If 2008 had gone differently, things would be better around here, but as it is, there isn't much difference between rooting for SIU and getting to the spot that WKU is in...

I wasn't sure where SIU would fall.

They have a title...but it was 1983, then there was a whole lot of being not so good...which started about the same time UNI joined the conference...but the last 6 years they have been a solid top 10-15 program. Then this year a preseason top 5 team and already eliminated from the playoffs, without an autobid...which as F'ed up as the Valley is they can still win

Ein, zwei, drei, fier . . .

Part Ein was Chris's thread about winning ugly versus losing elegantly.

#1. Without realistic hope, there is no reason to be excited about the upcoming season.

No smack intended, honestly, but it wasn't that long ago that Appy State was option #1. Just something for the UNI's/UNH's of the FBS world to think about.

Very true.

#2 for me. You have the flags, and you certainly have the hope that you will return to glory.

NFL examples...

#1 - Eagles
#2 - Redskins, Raiders
#3 - Lions
#4 - Bears, Chargers

UNI has been finishing like UNI since about 1985 when we joined the FCS.

You are APPsolutely correct. Prior to 05 we fit that description perfectly! :thumb: Having followed the team since attending ASU in the 70s I truly appreciate how hard it is to win a NC.

Since my team doesn't play in the playoffs, I guess winning a title is out. But I want my program to be a consistent winner.

Actually, that would have been a great #5. A team that has no shot at the playoffs no matter how good they are. :|
