best coach/worst coach in your program's history

as the title states:
for Southern some people say the best coach was A.W. Mumford (179-61-13 in 25 years) but since I wasn't around then my vote goes to Pete Richardson (135-61 in 17 years) he turned around a mediocre program and had a few teams that could have at least made the playoffs (1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, and maybe 2003) won SWAC 5 times and had a nine game win streak over Grambling.

Worst coach was Gerald Kimble (14-18-1 in 3 years) now there might have been coaches with worse records but I think it says something when you are better as a PA announcer than as a coach.

Best would have to go to Mickey since he won the National Championship, but Dukes' fans would be remiss not to strongly consider the program's first coach, Callace McMillin. Not only did he serve as head coach and build the foundation for the program, but he also coached our most successful pros and still serves as the sports psychologist for JMU athletics.

Worst - Alex Wood. No doubt in my mind. He had a horrible record and every player account I've heard on him is that he was a grade A a-hole to his players. When he left he promised his team he'd be a coach in the NFL in a couple of years...

Best: Erk Russell... started the program from scratch and won 3 NC's (including 15-0-0 in 1989) and 1 runner-up in 8 years, also set the 1-AA/FCS home winning streak record. Honorable mention to Paul Johnson, who won 2 NC's and 1 runner-up in 5 years.

Worst: Brian Van Gorder... nuked the program's famed triple option offense and went 3-8 in his only year before hightailing it out of town only 12 days before Nat'l Signing Day.

Yeah, I think when they decide to name the main street around campus after the guy, that pretty much settles it.

Best: Bob Mattos, 1978-1992 (Passed away last year at the age of 68) RIP. Wiinningest coach in school history, led the 1988 team to the DII playoffs where the Hornets won their first two games. An amazing man and coach.

Worst: Steve Mooshagian, 2003-2006 (Worst coach EVER!). This guy did absolutely nothing during his short tenure, except complain.

Best is Jerry Moore. Longest tenured coach by a mile. 3 National Titles. 21 years at App with a .79 win percentage is pretty impressive.

Not sure who the worst is. There are a few with short tenures and bad records, but I don't know enough about them to say who the worst is.

And, off topic question for a Wofford fan... was Bob Breitenstein... Appalachian's coach in 1959... Eric Breitenstein's grandfather? I knew Eric was from the Boone area and saw that name on the list of App's coaches and got curious.

Worst: Earl Solomonson, 1987 - 1991 overall record 15-40. Set program back many years that we are still trying to recover from in some areas in Montana.

Honorable Mention to Sonny Lubick. Didn't have a steller record, but did win a Big Sky Championship in 1979 and it was his recruits that won the National Title in 1984. Jury is still out on Rob Ash. Like what we are seeing so far, but time will tell.

Worst, Scott Downing, Nice guy but couldn't beat an egg even with the proper instructions.

Dunbar still went 7-4, 7-4, 8-3, 7-4. The fact he didn't get us to the playoffs is what hurts his reputation at UNI. If we get to the playoffs even twice during his time he is looked at in a much different light. But yeah, he is probably the "worst" coach we have had, then again he was the coach last time we lost to Youngstown.

I'd at Darrell "Dr. Victory" Mudra to the best list. 43–16–1 during his time at UNI, was the coach during the D1 transition and led UNI to two semi final appearances in our first three years of D1.

Even though he was before my time I think I speak for a lot of Flames fans when I say that the best coach in our history was Sam Rutigliano. All time winningest coach in school history and led LU to its highest national ranking in school history and probably the closest they ever had been to the playoffs until the Big South qualified for an autobid this year. WOrst...probably Ken Karcher. 1 winning season in his time on the mountain and if not for Danny Rocco I think it would have set us back a number of years

Gil Dobie was undefeated but was only there a couple years, so the best coach would be Darrell Mudra, who turned the program around in the early 1960's and won the first of 8 National Championships.

Worst record was Del Anderson 1-16-1 in 1954-55 seasons.


PS: Even Darrell Mudra couldn't win a championship at UNI
