A process that pointed the University of South Dakota toward sending its athletic programs to the Big Sky Conference has taken an abrupt turn.
At a news conference today in Vermillion, the school is expected to announce that it will join the Missouri Valley Football Conference while honoring its commitment to the Summit League in all other sports.
Since South Dakota State also belongs to Missouri Valley Football and the Summit, today’s announcement means the Coyotes and Jackrabbits will compete in the same league for all sports for the first time since they went NCAA Division I.
USD officials would not comment Wednesday on the 11th-hour negotiations, but word spread quickly that the school would be turning its back on the Big Sky, which welcomed the University of North Dakota and Southern Utah on Monday.
UND athletic director Brian Faison hinted during a UND coaches radio show Wednesday night that the Coyotes were not going to fall in line with the Sioux on Big Sky membership.

Sounds like a done deal. Does this lead to a 2 division split.

After making the last 3 trips out there, I doubt it.

would be an interesting breakdown.
wonder how that would work... play the other 4 in your division every year, and then 4 of the 5 in the other division? Or would they go with a 7-game schedule (3 of the 5 out of the other division) to give more OOC flexibility? Would kind of be nice to have 4 OOC games to work with for UNI (2 FBS money games, buying a home game with someone, and 1 slot left to work in quality home-and-home series)
Though it would definitely be odd to have seasons where the Panthers and Salukis don't face off.

I would like to play everyone, but I really wonder if the idea was to keep the league at a stable size while appeasing YSU. Doing two divisions would lighten the load on travel. If we are going to do two divisions I would like to add two more schools. Too bad we couldn't convince two schools out of Drake, Dayton, and Butler to go scholly.

Well this is sort of an unexpected turn of events, chances North Dakota may change their minds on the Big Sky?

Yeah, cause travel wasn't already craptastic enough...
This conference blows. Too much competition.

USD is in the extreme southeastern tip of SD, it shouldn't have much of an effect on travel.

This makes the BSC's offer to UND that much worse. How do you accept ONE of those two without having the other locked down?
BSC just got punked, big time. Having one UXD school looks fucking retarded on a map.

Let's all keep in mind that even though USD may be interested, doesn't it have to pass a vote by the current ADs and Presidents???
The league schedule is already bad enough. We don't need another conference game, we need more OOC games so that we can actually play some home games! Missouri State is only going to have 5 home games AGAIN next year because of the MVFC schedule.
If anything else, the MVFC needs to DROP schools.

Are you trying to say you''d like just playing 2 non conference games every year? I just don't see the MVFC doing divisions with just 10 teams.

I don't like the conference playing just two OOC games, and I'm not sure it would happen.
That means the teams would play one FBS school (more often than not) and one FCS or lower OOC game. That means teams are going to lose a home game, possibly....amidst other pretty big implications.
I see a 5 team division, with 3 OOC games, and 3 games against the other division.
The only issue there is the "rivalry" games.
SIU/UNI and whatever else. The SIU/UNI is the only game I really care about saving. UNI/YSU maybe, but that's a meh for me.

Credit Tom Douple with this from the Summit League, he worked his ass off with the MVFC to make this happen. Here's a write up from the AL website. Oh you stupid sioux, with your dumb name controversy. How will 13 teams work in the Big Sky?
Jackrabbit Nation will be split, but for the most part the Summit needed USD and got rid of SUU travel expenses. Really collapsed our footprint a little in the Summit, now only Oral Bob is a distance. That's a win.
As for football the Coyotes have two natural rivalries, and are trying to build one with UNI. It's good for the confernce in my opinion.

I've been pretty "against" USD in the MVFC, but I think this could be a good move. It "might" be protection against the realignment crap in the future.
