Tirrell Rennie-UNI QB

Post by DJH »

Has 1,135 rushing yards and 14 TDs, with a 6.2 yard avg, 126 yds/game.

Has 1,262 passing yards and 5 TDs/8 INTs.

Guy is putting up crazy rushing statistics for a QB, especially considering he is a first year DI starter.

True or Redshirt Freshman? Or a juco transfer?

juco.

Also impressive, considering he split snaps with our other QB for the first 3-4 games.

He's had 534 rushing yards in the last three games. Thats a 178 rushing yards per game. Thats pretty crazy for anyone.

Our OC is still trying to figure out how to use him best. Several of his ints were early in the year when they tried to use him as a pocket passer. Passing will never be his forte, he has a strong arm, but at 6-foot (maybe) he has a tough time seeing downfield with our 6'5" linemen in front of him.

He is very dangerous in the spread-option. Lightning quick with good balance and some moves that use up ankle supports.

Yeah, he is good. When SFA played up there I remember being scared everytime he looked like he was about to take off running. Especially after he took a 75 yd run to the house on the first offensive play of the game! Great athlete! Has he done a better job protecting the ball?

10000 times better.

Instead of fighting out of tackles 40 yards down field, he covers up with both hands and hangs on for dear life. He has also cut his INT's down big time and is making much smarter throws.

It helps the plays being called have improved about 20 fold

He reminds me a lot of Cam Newton from Auburn. Rennie can slash through the defense, and he surely made our defense look childish, although our 3 starting linebackers were out with injuries.

Except that Newton probably has about 8 inches and about 50-60 pounds on Rennie. A better comparison of psychical size is AE from Appy ST. Not saying he has the same abilities (long way to prove that). However, there is the same "he's gonna get snapped in half when a linebacker hits him" look while running the ball. However, neither ever seems to get hit straight on.

Don't let Jay see that.

There is no way a running QB can make it through a season without taking massive blows that will destroy him physically.

I've also thought AE was a better comparison as well.

Rennie and AE are both "slippery" out in the open field.

What is making Rennie more difficult to defend is that his passing ability has vastly improved. The first 3-4 games, his throwing mechanics were such that almost every pass was sailing high. You know it is on the QB if a 6' 7" TE is jumping straight up to catch a ball, multiple times per game - and whiffing on about 50%.

Our OC has started to figure out what plays to call, the Oline has gelled, and Rennie is working through his progressions. Night and day difference from the first two games I saw.

Rennie is now 5th in the nation in rushing TDs, and only 3 less than the nations leader.

Rennie is 6th in the nation in rushing yardage, and 8th in YPG.

I do hope I'm proven wrong.
But otherwise, I can refer back to your quote after Rennie is knocked out of a game with an injury.

Good for you. I'm glad you would use an injury to Rennie to gloat. :dunce:

The fact is that there is NO statistical proof running QB's get hurt more than pocket QB's.

Rennie with (only) 75 more rushing yards today.

And was 8-10 for 161 yards passing, with 3 TDs.

I had the UNI game online in the background and thought I heard Rennie get banged up on a play, forced out of the game. Was I hearing things? Like I said, it was in the background.
Oh, your play-by-play announcer is decent, and he really sounds familiar.
Good luck in the playoffs.

I think he just got the wind knocked out of him. He was back like 3 plays later.

That happened pretty much right in front of our seats. I TiVo'd the game so I'll have to double check but it looks like a back issue.

I don't know if he twisted, or took a shot to the back, or if it just cramped (that would be odd), but he was out for 2 plays I believe and came back in and looked fine.

MSU was putting shots on him all day, and they looked like they had bad intentions with many of them. There was one time I thought a "spearing" penalty should have been called. Rennie was wrapped up by about 5 guys and had forward progress stopped, a d-lineman from behind the play came sprinting in and seemed to "launch" into the pile helmet first at Rennie's upper chest/head area.

Our defensive goal going into the game was to stack the box against him, which killed us on some long passes.

Rennie is one HELLUVA player.
