Montana and the other solid teams!!!!
Ok so after today watching Montana just tear apart NAU. and seeing App.st tear apart Wofford last night.... i am really starting to see the teams that look like they are going to be powerful going into the playoffs...
App.st- going to take a great show to take them down but could be done in playoffs
JMU- a little less impressive.... not like they are bad but i think App.st is the NUM.1
UM- coming on strong and if they keep it up i think could be TOUGH in playoffs,
Weber State- Still for real.... they are a top ten team and maybe a top 5 its close
Cal Poly- impressive again but i think they are floating around the weber state level
who else you guys think is really looking good for the upcoming playoff picture??

Know this may sound ridiculous, but Wofford will make some noise...they were leading the nation in scoring before Friday, run ball control, and were #3 for a reason....nobody could have beaten App Fri.mtgrizfankb wrote:Ok so after today watching Montana just tear apart NAU. and seeing App.st tear apart Wofford last night.... i am really starting to see the teams that look like they are going to be powerful going into the playoffs...

Richmond is good, Northern Iowa is impressive and McNeese has more speed than App from what UNC fans tell me....

Unless Wofford can get a defender somewhere near the ball, it's difficult to see them as a title threat.Appaholic wrote:Know this may sound ridiculous, but Wofford will make some noise...they were leading the nation in scoring before Friday, run ball control, and were #3 for a reason....nobody could have beaten App Fri.

Wofford will make some noise? You think App State is 50 points better than all the rest of the playoff candidates?Mvemjsunpx wrote:Unless Wofford can get a defender somewhere near the ball, it's difficult to see them as a title threat.Appaholic wrote:Know this may sound ridiculous, but Wofford will make some noise...they were leading the nation in scoring before Friday, run ball control, and were #3 for a reason....nobody could have beaten App Fri.

McNeese could still beat Northwestern and get the Southland auto-bid, no? Or will their loss to Texas State probably keep them out? Central Arkansas is ineligible this year. Not a strong conference. Too bad the McNeese-Cal Poly game was cancelled.

I agree with your picks and would add Richmond and Villanova to the top tier (though not for seeding consideration).mtgrizfankb wrote:Ok so after today watching Montana just tear apart NAU. and seeing App.st tear apart Wofford last night.... i am really starting to see the teams that look like they are going to be powerful going into the playoffs...

Even after yesterday's beat-down of Wofford, Sagarin still rates JMU nearly six points ahead of Appalachian State. I don't think the standard 2.78 home field differential applies in this case.
Montana and App State appear to be peaking at just about the right time. The Grizz have apparently fixed what ailed them in relatively weak showings against Cal Poly, UC Davis, Central Washington and Weber.
Yes, Weber is for real and should do well in the first round, but this is the first time any of these relatively young lads - mostly juniors, sophomores and redshirt freshmen - will have performed in this rarified playoff atmosphere as college players. They are doing so many things well, but there are still plenty of things to work on. Honestly I will not be able to make up my mind about whether Weber truly belongs in the top four or the top ten until I see them play Eastern Washington. The Wildcats still need to work on the flaws exposed earlier in the season against Sac State, Northern Colorado, and Portland State. If they win out their last two games against Idaho State and Eastern Washington to finish 8-0 Big Sky and 10-2 overall, I would give them the nod for a top four seed.
Haven't made up my mind about Cal-Poly, either. Can't wait to see how they perform against UC Davis on the 15th. I thought it foolish to schedule Wisconsin on the 22nd, their last game before the playoffs. Not just a tune-up game. A bit of hubris, perhaps?

Okay, Im new to the FCS workd and was brought in by nephews who play at Weber State (justsaw them beat Portland State live and in person), and as a former D1A player myself, am pretty damned impressed with these guys. So here is a question, if Weber wins their last two games in impressive fashion and presuming they get a top 4 seed, how many games could they potetially play at home?

Maybe as many as two. The top four seeds play at home, and everyone else has to bid competitively for the home field advantage. IF we are seeded top four and IF we win our first round, our "bid" would be then pitted against our scheduled opponent's bid (I think...).fbondabrain wrote:Okay, Im new to the FCS workd and was brought in by nephews who play at Weber State (justsaw them beat Portland State live and in person), and as a former D1A player myself, am pretty damned impressed with these guys. Re: Montana and the other solid teams!!!!
If Weber is a 3 or 4 seed they will have home field for the first two rounds by placing the minimum bid. Even if a competing team outbids them they will have at least two games at home with the seed. If the 1 or 2 seed wins their firs two games then Weber would travel in the tird game to the higher seeds home field. If Weber does not get a top 4 seed then it is the wild west and they would have to outbid to have the home games. The bids are placed by each of the 16 teams before the seeds adn pairings are done and then once the pairings are done the bids are opened and the home team is established. I can't remember what the minimum bid is but it is not extavagant.native wrote:Maybe as many as two. I am not sure of its significance, but am willing to ponder this question over and over again.
Back to football... now that I understand the process, I sure hope Weber gets the seed. Although as I tried to explain ratings and seeds to the lad, he retorted that it didn't matter and was all BS anyway, that they could beat anybody on any field. Ahhh youth! Whether he is right or wrong, he certainly has the right attitude!
Re: Montana and the other solid teams!!!!
Personally, I would have to include UNI in the top tier as a contender. Although some of the other teams mentioned in this thread might not be "top tier" in terms of seeding, I believe that there are more dangerous teams this year than in previous years. That includes Wofford, Richmond, Villanova, etc. etc. etc. There are likely to be no easy rounds this year (although I don't know how much tougher a first round game can get than the App/JMU game last year).

For sure i was not really saying seeding wise.... i think that those teams could be danger right now.... i will list teams that i think could have deep runs in playoffsYosef84 wrote:Personally, I would have to include UNI in the top tier as a contender. App.st, JMU, wofford, weber state, Montana, Cal Poly, UNI, Richmond.
As far as seeding this is how i would love for seeds to fall
app.st, jmu, montana,weber state
but this is how it will happen i believe
1 JMU
2 App
3 Montana
4 Cal Poly

I have a feeling the 4 seeds will be:
1. JMU
2. App State
3. Cal Poly
4. UNI
I think even with a Cal Poly loss to Wisconsin they will still get the seed if it is at all close. If Weber wins out I think they get sent to Cal Poly, while Montana gets the #2 team from the So-Con at home in the first round (with JMU getting MEAC winner, ASU getting Southland winner, UNI getting OVC winner)

Once again!!! how?? ya weber beat them two months ago when seeds come out.... and MOntana has less losses and better quaility wins. weber played a naia team a low to mid Div II team and lost to 2 FBS..Col Hogan wrote:Remember, the polls don't determine the seeds...the committee does...polls are just one tool...mtgrizfankb wrote: For sure i was not really saying seeding wise.... i think that those teams could be danger right now.... i will list teams that i think could have deep runs in playoffs

Montana BEAT a top 5 FCS team and a mid to high FCS team. Then Beat a high reanked Div II team. and a low FCS team.
Thats why montana gets the seed and Weber dont

This reply if for FBONDABRAIN who is related to the 2 weber players.
Weber is obviously a pretty good team, but the fact that they were up 31-0 at the half and let portland state score 21 points in the second have (without weber scoring anymore points), doesn't look good for them. There has been plenty of talk about that and I read about it in the ogden news online. You can't lose interest in the second half like they did and expect to do well in the playoffs. That's why Montana always does so well, they don't give up; EVER. Dont get me wrong, weber is tough. They beat Montana for the first time in 10 years so that says a lot. I will say that Montana played like absolute crap against them in Ogden. The Grizzlies are a different team now. But, we all have our opinion right? Anyway, if the griz and weber end up tying for the conference win, the griz will get more home games than weber simply because of MONEY. Montana's stadium leads the nation almost every year in attendance and for this reason, the FCS will place more playoff games in Missoula.
