K-State QB Transferring To JMU Posted January 09, 2011 12:00 AM EST
Cosh To Join Dukes
By Mike Barber
PARK RIDGE, N.J. - Quarterback Billy Cosh is transferring from Kansas State and will play football at James Madison, sources said Sunday. Cosh redshirted this past season and will have four years to play for the Dukes.
The 6-foot-1, 216-pound Gambrils, Md. native could not be reached for comment. At Arundel High School, Cosh led his team to a 22-3 mark as a starter, becoming the all-time leader in career touchdown passes in state history with 112. He also set single-season state records with 3,913 yards and 56 scoring strikes as a senior in 2009.
Cosh graduated a semester early from Arundel and enrolled at Kansas State.
He chose the Wildcats over Kentucky and East Carolina. His father, Chris Cosh, became Kansas State's defensive coordinator before this past season after three years in the same position at Maryland.
JMU returns sophomore Justin Thorpe - the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association Offensive Rookie of the Year, freshman Jace Edwards - who redshirted this season - and former R.E. Lee High School star Dae'Quan Scott. Scott started this year at wide receiver but moved to quarterback for the final two games, running an option style attack that spurred wins over Maine and William & Mary. That helped JMU finish 6-5, though it missed the playoffs for the second straight year.
This recruiting period, JMU has added a commitment from Fork Union Military Academy quarterback Andre Coble. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Coble originally signed to play at low-level Division I-A Temple in its 2010 class but failed to qualify academically
While Kansas State starter Carson Coffman was a senior this season, the Wildcats have four other quarterbacks on the roster, including two other freshman. Kansas State went 7-6 this year, losing 36-34 to Syracuse in the inaugural Pinstripe Bowl at the new Yankee Stadium in New York.

"Holds the Maryland state records for passing yards in a season (3,913), touchdowns in a season (56), attempts (292) and completions in a season (448)... Ranks first in Maryland high school history with 112 career touchdown passes... Broke the Maryland Public School record by throwing for 7,433 career yards... Also finished as the state's all-time leader in total yards with 7, 882..."

Geez, the kid holds about every HS state passing record in the state of MD. Guess Mickey told him JMU is going to throw more......

Doesn't show that he's much of a runner.

Dae'Quan Scott who ran the wildcat so effectively the last 2 games in wins over W&M and Maine doesn't remain at QB. The Cable kid that is coming in from Fork Union's PG team likely redshirts and likely won't even be at QB come 2012.
It will be a 3 man race between:
-Justin Thorpe, who will be a rJr. 08' CAA offensive rookie of the year when he started the last 7 games for the injured Dudzik and missed all of last season after going down with a knee injury in the opener vs Morehead St.
-Jace Edwards, a very promising freshman recruit from heralded Tx program Midland Lee who redshirted this past season.
-Billy Cosh from K-State
Cosh and Edwards will both be rFr, but Cosh, since he graduated from HS a semester early in Dec 09' and enrolled at K-State Jan 10, will have 2 spring practices under his belt to Edwards one, one at K-State and one at JMU. If Edwards or Cosh win the job, think Thorpe will still get 1-2 doz snaps or so a game at wildcat, and maybe some at receiver too, as he is such a superior athlete at this level.

Oh give me a break. Its one thing if you have a (I-A) transfer starting year after year after year (like UD has the last 9? years). The 4 QBs JMU has started over the last 4 years, Landers (2 yrs), Dudzik (13 games), Thorpe (7 games), and Scott (2 games (wildcat)) have all been HS recruits.
Probably 1/5-1/4 of the I-AA teams out there will be starting a transfer.

Another off the mark CMom post. You know, JMU has had FBS QB transfers before.... but Justin Rascati never did anything significant for the JMU football program.

I just can't believe JMU would stoop to the level of schools like Eastern Washington and take a transfer quarterback.

Not really JMU DJ - I think you've misinterpreted my post because it actually fits.
(unless you're referencing w/l but the guys at SAM/NWS haven't done just that great in that dept)

Your hatred for all things CAA, whether rational or not, clouds your judgment and reasoning. Keep puting your hopes and dreams behind that litany of FBS transfers you have there.

Defensive much? I was talking about how well FBS QBs have faired at the likes of SAM and NWS. It was a joke, fun, intentionally left out there for a laugh. Had nothing to do with CAA hate, at all...that's your interpretation. My God.
You totally missed it
Of Course, if someone else had said something in the spririt of sarcastic fun like that it would have been ok, right?

"The Gunslingers
#4 Billy Cosh
Billy Cosh is the greatest high school quarterback in Maryland history. That's not opinion — it's fact. He rewrote nearly every single state record during his four years as a quarterback for Arundel High School. Some people might sneer at the offers he had out of high school, but I've watched his film and I consider us lucky we had an "in" during his recruitment — his dad's our defensive coordinator.
Cosh's legend has grown since arriving in Manhattan for spring practice, despite the fact that he had a pretty terrible spring game. Reports out of fall camp are that he has the strongest arm of all our quarterbacks, and probably the most accuracy as well. There's even a rumor he broke a wide receiver's finger with one of his passes.
Barring a complete meltdown at the QB position, Cosh should redshirt this season. But if neither Klein nor Lamur show us much of anything this season, he very well might enter 2011 as the favorite to replace Coffman...."

Well, JMU's only title did come on the back of a transfer FBS QB, so maybe they're just trying to get back to what worked in the past?

Because other posters don't constantly bitch and moan about everything - then turn around and say "I had a bad day", "I'm tired", "You just don't get it", blah, blah, blah.

Why is getting a transfer such a bad thing to some people? Don't you want the best players possible at your school?
You know what, I'm gonna start a discussion thread about it.

So something weird caught my attention:
Why would the byline read: "Park Ridge, NJ"? The article is about a kid from Maryland transferring from a school in Kansas to a school in Virginia.
Bandl - did you write that from your in-laws?

I saw that originally too. I was actually going to forward that to the wife and father-in-law...but then I actually READ the article instead of just ASSuming.

Wait second. He was a 3-star QB? But, a terrible 2-star QB started over him. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?

You just don't get it, Clenz
... not my interpretation when you say this CM:
CatMom wrote:Another CAA school putting their hopes behind an FBS transfer.
Sounds pretty negative to me. I got your "sarcasm," just decided to call you on it this time. Look through your post CM, especially the ones that pertain to CAA related material, they're all "sarcastic," "snarky" remarks. It'd be like me coming into Southland related threads and saying something like "Man, Texas State San Marcos needs to quit taking those FBS transfers if it's going to lead them to a 4-7 record. What are they trying to be like JMU and UD with their national title FBS transfer QBs?"
