WAC still looking

Stole this from the MMB. Could UM and MSU still make the jump?

Although I would like to see the Montana schools make the jump, I doubt it will happen. With the recent actions of the BSC though, who knows really.

The WAC is showing it's desperation by re-visiting schools that very recently rejected them. Maybe though, this is the perfect time for them to invade. They gave time for the schools in the BSC to realize what the costs would be to stay in the BSC. Pretty easy from their perspective to prepare a pitch that shows why it would be more cost effective to jump.

Agree that there is probably too much inertia to overcome, but a package deal would have to look more attractive to them now than it did before MSU announced their stadium upgrades.

The WAC is stabilized now, after the NCAA waved/changed the continuity rule
Proposal 2010-100 was adopted Thursday by the NCAA’s Legislative Council, which will allow the WAC to remain an FBS/Division I league as it is currently composed. Provided, of course, it doesn’t continue to hemorrhage members, which likely will remain a concern for the foreseeable future.

But for now, the league can at least breath a little bit easier after the continuity clause that required conferences to maintain a core membership of six schools for at least five years was abolished. In its place, conferences must have “seven active Division I members” – all of which sponsor men’s basketball, and six that sponsor at least five other sports, including football
http://blog.mysanantonio.com/utsa/2011/ ... onvention/

However, it also will now be very hard for any FCS to move up.
Quote from the WAC forum
-- Under the newly approved NCAA conference membership rules, FCS schools can ONLY advance to FBS by joining an existing FBS conference or conference that has been an FBS conference. There's no avenue for an FCS conference to promote itself to FBS status at some time in the future when its members are "more ready", hence schools that stay in the Big Sky, Southland, MVFC, etc. cannot advance to FBS.

-- The new rules also create virtually insurmountable barriers to creating new Division 1 conferences, e.g. a requirement to sponsor a full slate of men's and women's sports for eight years before being recognized by the NCAA. So, there almost certainly will not be any new FBS conferences created to sponsor FCS schools that want to advance to FBS.

-- Other than the WAC, MAC and Sun Belt, it's unlikely that any existing FBS conference will be inviting any FCS schools to join in the foreseeable future. Moreover the MAC is already up to 14 members (assuming its invitation to UMass goes through), and the Sun Belt has sworn off adding more FCS schools. For FCS schools that have FBS ambitions, especially in the west, the WAC is the only game in town.

The bottom line is that, as soon as the Big East and MWC and CUSA dominoes are done falling and the WAC knows what schools it's left with, the WAC will be in a position to go to Montana, UC Davis, Cal Poly, Sam Houston State or any other FCS schools it wants and say "we have X number of remaining available spaces that we intend to fill; if you ever want to have an FBS football program, commit to join the WAC by date Y now, or be left out and risk being stuck at the FCS level for a very, very long time."

Should both Montanas decide to move up, would they be happy with the possibility of being one of the conference doormats for the first few years until they get their program up to the FBS level?

I think so. There is always going to be some type of transition period for any school growing the football program. UND has had a terrible time of it. Some schools never get competitive, others struggle and some dont miss a beat.

Whether it sucks or not is irrelevant in the overall landscape because it is still an FBS conference. It's a place to start, get a foot in the door, for almost all FCS teams looking to move up, especially now.
While we aren't the greatest school, in terms of football, it can be turned around just by press, prestige hires, exposure...etc. New coaching staff can only help improve a team that wasted a lot of talent last year and gradually bring in better and better recruits. ESPN is already looking to put our first game vs UTSA on TV. The only time we have been on, for football, has been the playoffs in 2005.
WAC still has a TV contract, so it will be a little more exposure. This aspect I can handle. I just hate not being in the playoffs any longer.

I too believe as CatMom does and besides the play off problem might cure itself?

Nope. Texas State will never play another "meaningful" game again.

The very best they can hope for is to get an upset in their pay games once every couple years, and maybe one of the very low end bowl games.

Even with a playoff at the FBS level TSU would never be in it.

Yeah, I know and it doesn't just thrill thinking about it but it's the reality of it. Hell, I won't even make most, if not all, of the away games from now on, and that pisses me off too.

Fine by me. I'd rather have a non meaningful game on ESPN then wait for a playoff game to get picked up by ESPN 2. Even if it isn't a playoff game, more people will watch and it will give the team more exposure.

I was upset about not getting to play in the playoffs anymore. Yet I've heard more Texas State talk by random people since the move up then in 8 years of following the team. Its nice that people are willing to have a conversation about the team without having to explain what FCS is and the Southland conference is.

I don't know why TXSU fans would be upset about not getting playoffs anymore anyway. Shit you guys have been there what, 5 times in school history.

I guess going from a 5 win FCS team to a 3 wins FBS team is a good step for Texas State.

Yeah cause all your playoff runs have made you relevant.

Thats the beauty of the WAC. The teams suck so it will be easy to compete pretty quick.

All I know is the move is getting us an incredible stadium upgrade, better head coach, increased ticket sales, and increased donations.

Nobody cared until 2005, then it became a goal to strive for clenz. Guess you're arrogant attitude doesn't allow for you to understand that. The players wanted it, and the fans finally wanted/demanded a team that was good enough to make that run. It may not have happened but it became a goal/mindset that wasn't really there before.

Saw where Sam Houston and Lamar might go. Geez..why not name the conference the Southland or just make the Southland an FBS conference. Seems like everyone from the SLC is leaving for the WAC.

I had to give up a lot of away game too when NDSU moved into the FBS. I used to see them all except the Norther Colorado game. It was fun.

Im pretty happy with FCS football. Im not an advocate of a move to FCS as I was earlier but I certainly would get on board if the AD had a chance to move us into an FCS conference. The WAC is about the only place we could go. With the Montana Schools in it would look pretty good.

FWIW - As I said, I'm not just the happiest camper with all this but I'm not totally disgruntled. While I don't like the Bowl system, it is and will always be the U and the team I follow. I'm also not excited by Franchione being hired but I am really liking the staff he has put together. It does excite me to see if this all pans out in a good way.

If it took this move to FBS to finally get these athletes a coaching staff they deserve I can't be anything but happy for the guys on the team (many of whom I am acquainted with)
