Jackson St could face loss of NCAA membership
Jackson State University's football team will be banned from postseason play this fall and the athletic department's membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association is likely to be restricted by 2012 if the NCAA does not grant the school's waiver request.
The team's Academic Progress Rate, a rolling, four-year figure that calculates academic performance, has fallen below a critical benchmark for the third straight year, according to documents obtained recently by The Clarion-Ledger through a public records request.
That puts the program into the third of the four-step APR penalty ladder. The fourth step is the loss of NCAA membership.

That doesn't bode well for a program that seemed to have playoff (and maybe conference change?) aspirations.

They weren't going anywhere. I don't even think JSU people truly belive that. Even though they are a bitter rival I hope they work this out because Southern isn't far behind them in this mess. That doesn't bode well for a program that seemed to have playoff (and maybe conference change?) aspirations.

Maybe this is why Tennessee St. was invited to join the SWAC last month. If they say no and JSU is kicked out, then I wonder if one of the 13 MEAC members would be invited.

Wow, to go from Ryan Perilloux playing there to this...I didn't think they offered scholarships though.

Jacksonville State was home to Perilloux and is in the OVC and is based in Alabama
Jackson St is an HBCU in the SWAC and based in Miss.

That's the only MEAC name I've ever heard when talking about a move to the SWAC.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:FAMU?Fresno St. Alum wrote:Maybe this is why Tennessee St. was invited to join the SWAC last month. In general, when it comes to HBCUs, particularly out West, one hears about little beyond Grambling and Southern. Perhaps Mississippi Valley State (Jerry Rice), Alcorn State (Air McNair), or on a rare occasion Morgan State.
For sake of edification, could someone rank the HBCU conferences in terms of relative competitiveness, especially for football? Does it vary any for other sports?
Thanks.

Personally I think this past season the MEAC was stronger at the top than the SWAC. I guess they were better overall with SU and MVSU dragging the SWAC down. I don't know much about MEAC bball but I'm sure they're probably a bit better there too. In the SWAC anybody can beat anybody and nobody's really good. Plus SWAC officiating is worse.

tj - question for you as fan of an HBCU... what are your thoughts on the HBCUs seeming to very frequently end up in the "play-in" game in Dayton?
I've noticed that most years at least one of the teams playing on tuesday night is an HBCU - and wondered if it was a phenomenon noticed by fans of those conferences or if it was just a quirk of weak teams winning their conference tourneys...

I think most people notice it and understand that the level of play in the league isn't as good as it should be. My thoughts are that any SWAC team that makes the pig deserves to be there. I think the league shoots themselves in the foot with bad scheduling. Any time we've had a pretty good team they've avoided the pig. Same with the MEAC. I'm glad the league got a win last season.tj - question for you as fan of an HBCU... what are your thoughts on the HBCUs seeming to very frequently end up in the "play-in" game in Dayton?

Right now, according to Sagarin, the two lowest auto-bid conferences are the MEAC and the SWAC, with the SWAC coming in behind independents and the Great West
The three lowest (by far) top rated team in each conference belong to:
Southland - Stephen Austin - 187
MEAC - Hampton - 189
SWAC - Texas Southern - 230
Next lowest is Sunbelt, with FAU at 146

I'm not surprised, the top of the league isn't good. But the bottom of the league has to be the worst in the nation.Right now, according to Sagarin, the two lowest auto-bid conferences are the MEAC and the SWAC, with the SWAC coming in behind independents and the Great West

Especially when you consider the fact that Centenary(#344) is a team transitioning into DIII and has no wins. Double ouch.Grizalltheway wrote:Southern...ouch.

Isn't there a team in the SWAC that did their whole non-conference sked on the road?

Okay, so you're the only one that bit. If you'll notice there, Mr. Fancy Pants, I actually had two wrong schools. Jax State had Perilloux and the Jacksonville Dolphins don't offer schollies.
