Todd Walker, 20, and a female friend were walking home after a St. Patrick's Day party in Boulder when a man wearing a black bandanna over his face confronted them, according to ABC affiliate KMGH.
The station reported that a police spokeswoman said that after a verbal and physical confrontation, Walker's friend was able to pull the bandanna off the man's face. He fired a shot into the air and then fired a second shot at Walker, police said.
Walker was taken to Boulder Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, KMGH reported.

Very sad news. Had something similar-ish happen to me, glad I kept it cool

Very sad and a waste of a young life.....
"Born in other countries, yet believing you could be happy in this, our laws acknowledge, as they should do, your right to join us in society, conforming, as I doubt not you will do, to our established rules. That these rules shall be as equal as prudential considerations will admit, will certainly be the aim of our legislatures, general and particular." --Thomas Jefferson, letter to Hugh White, 1801

The suspect who has admitted to the killing was sentenced to 5 years in prison back in 2009 and was released early a year later in the early part of 2010.
Re: UNH Football Player Shot, Killed in Colorado
It happened at the University of Colorado. He was from Colorado originally.
His companion was not killed. He was walking her home from a party, a guy came up and tried to swipe her purse, she resisted, he tried to step in and the guy shot him point blank in the chest. The shooter ran away (without the purse) and the girl called 911.
Not a high crime area. Mostly houses rented by students. I've driven near that area and getting mugged and shot is the last thing I'd expect to happen.
