Rivalries
Rivalries
Knowing this board I know how this thread will likely turn out, and feel free to shit talk away as it gives me what I'm looking for.
I'm starting to work on my next set of blogs to put out. I haven't put one out in quite some time, but I've been struggling with ideas that wouldn't be better suited for when football traffic picks up. I'm working on my MVFC predictions and breakdowns and am going to start putting those out at some point, along with my preseason top 25, but I came across an idea I really want to try to dive into.
I want to feature some of the best rivalries in the FCS. I've got a couple of them in my head but I want a wider range of ideas of the teams.
I'm looking for what they mean to each school/player/fanbase, history of the rivalry (how it started, has it gotten more intense/died down and why), trophies on the line, memorable moments, etc...
So far the games I'm looking at featuring include: UPDATED 5:25 5/29
UNI/SIU
Montana/Montana St
SDSU/NDSU
ASU/GSU
Harvard/Yale
Southern/Grambling
Chuck South/Coastal Carolina
UD/Villanova
W&M/UR
CIT/VMI
Lehigh/Laffayette
With 96 days (at the time of the post) I'm looking at 13 weeks until the first game. That gives me about 12 weeks of articles before I start my weekly FCS update blogs. Along with the MVFC break downs (maybe other conference-much less in-depth than the MVFC) and the rivalry break downs, I'm hoping to get two a week done....assuming all goes as planned for me.

Re: Rivalries
The Citadel vs Vagina Military Institute is worth noting as well.

Re: Rivalries
CAA? UD vs. Villanova, W&M vs. UR.
ODU vs. JMU is gonna be the best one though.

Re: Rivalries
Chuck South and Coastal has turned into a pretty intense rivalry.

Re: Rivalries
Is SIU/UNI still a rivalry? I don't think we have anybody left who can remember losing to UNI. Maybe a redshirt senior...

Re: Rivalries
Southern/Grambling: Been playing continually since 1959, the series is tied at 29. Of course the rivalry is better known as the Bayou Classic. First held under that name in 1974 at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana, although the series itself actually began in 1936. Since 1978 the game has been held the final Saturday in November (i.e., the Saturday after Thanksgiving) at the Louisiana Superdome. A Waterford crystal trophy is awarded to the winning school. Grambling leads the Bayou Classic series 19-18.

Re: Rivalries
There's no doubt that the Southern v. Grambling game is huge as a rivalry and a revenue-generator for each school. But for anyone not part of those universities, it just seems like a half-ass consolation prize for not being confident enough to go to the playoffs. Why not play the game the week before Thanksgiving and let the winner (if their record serves) go to the playoffs?

1. the game has been played on a date that predates 1-AA, let alone FCSLDopaPDX wrote:There's no doubt that the Southern v. 2. there was no criteria given, he wanted to know about great rivalries, so it fits the topic
3. I'm sure you know that Grambling has been to the playoffs before.
4. it's great to know you speak for every football fan
5. i could say that any other rivalry that i'm not associated doesn't mean much, but thankfully i like to experience all that FCS has to offer

Do you have enough players left to field a team?DSUrocks07 wrote:Some school in Delaware is playing us this year lol

I've got an extra ticket if you'd like to sit with stuffy, old white people and me.

Re: Rivalries
You have to beat them before it's a rivalry, JaBBer. Minus rushing yardage and eleven sacks isn't much of a rivalry.JBB wrote:NDSU/UNI

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Re: Rivalries
As delightful a time as the Mountaineers have had in toying with the Convicts from The Stink (and, of course, The Wimmen of The Whee), Appalachian will soon derive great satisfaction in surpassing its greatest SoCon rival on a number of fronts. Here is your first hint:

Our first goal in 2011 is to exceed their nationally-acclaimed Academic Progress Rate. Our second goal for 2011 is to tie their record 12 SoCon football championships. It is important to note that it took our rival 75 years to accomplish their 12 championships. Appalachian is now entering their 39th year as a SoCon member.
Here is your second hint: *The Miracle on the Mountain*
Each year in the annual media guide Appalachian will herald its tradition of excellence, highlight our outstanding facilities, rejoice in our past and future 'gridiron gladiators' and of course, dedicate a page to that Big Win at the Big House ...
with the exact same size space dedicated in all its photographic glory, complete with a field diagram and step-by-step analysis, of how The Vermin from Furman snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

I always thought the JMU/App St rivalry were always intense.
