Big South QBs 2011
I did something like this to foster some discussion as we go through the summer and count down the weeks until fall practice kicks off so I thought Id try it again and naturally thought Id kick off with the position that touches the ball the most (other than the center) when the offense is on the field:
Charleston Southern
Malcolm Dixon 21/27 236 Yds 4 TD ) INT
Richard Mounce 3/7 20 Yds 0 TD 1 INT
Coastal Carolina
Aramis Hillary 13/25 132 Yards 1 TD 2 INT
Logan Hall No 2010 Stats
Gardner-Webb
John Rock 103/195 1298 Yds 7 TD 15 INT
Chandler Browning 91/169 863 Yds 4 TD 5 INT
Liberty
Mike Brown 223/351 2956 Yds 23 TDs 11 INT
Tyler Brennan 26/35 222 Yds 3 TD 1 INT
Presbyterian
Brandon Miley 59/107 509 Yds 4 TD 6 INT
Ryan Singer 45/81 560 Yds 4 TD 4 INT
Stony Brook
Michael Coulter 133/220 1811 Yds 17 TD 10 INT
Kyle Essington 3/4 34 Yds 0 TD 0 INT
VMI
Adam Morgan 35/76 370 Yds 3 TD 4 INT
Eric Kordenbrock 67/134 723 Yds 3 TD 7 INT
Two teams will have new faces starting under center going into training camp: Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern. Mike Brown (Big South First Team All Conference and 2010 Big South Offensive PoY) will be back. Only Liberty, Presbyterian and VMI will be returning both QBs from my "two deep" in last year's QB discussion.
If I had to rank the Big South QBs right now , it would look like this
1. Mike Brown, Liberty
2. Michael Coulter, Stony Brook
3. Adam Morgan, VMI
4. Brandon Miley, Presbyterian
5. Chandler Browning Gardner-Webb
6. Aramis Hillary, Coastal Carolina
7. Malcolm Dixon, Charleston Southern
Dixon and Hillary are pretty much unknown quantities, so Ive ranked them as the bottom 2 QBs. I wouldnt be surprised if there was some shakeup at a couple of these schools as to who will take the first offensive snap come September.

Re: Big South QBs 2011
Malcom Dixon is a totally different type of QB than Chuck South is accustomed to. A true duel threat who can run as well as he can pass. Spent most of last season at WR until the end when AJ and Trud were banged up. I look for Mounce to push him hard for the starting spot and if Dixon hangs on to the starting spot don't be surprised at all to see Mounce in there a slot or WR. He is too good an athlete to keep off the field.

That will certainly be a battle to watch (along with Coastal and VMI). If Dixon wins the job in August, itll be interesting to see how they adjust to his potential skillset as a running QB.

Re: Big South QBs 2011
John Rock I understand has left the program at G-Dubb. That leaves Chandler Browning as the only returning QB with experience. Word has it that G-Dubb has recruited a JUCO QB transfer along with a dual threat QB from New York. Browning having been in the program and going thru Spring Ball has all the tools to fill the spot and be an excellent QB for the Dawgs. With new HC Dickerson at the helm and based off of Spring Ball, there will be a totally different look to the G-Dubb Offense. Folks will be surprised it's just a question of how quick the Dawgs take to the new scheme. Still a balanced attack but I doubt you'll see too much shotgun especially in 3rd and short. Never understood the prior scheme in short yardage situations but the opposing coaches had to love it, but times are a changin.

Thanks for the update EagleDawg. Browning isnt as much of an unknown quantity as whoever ends up the starter at Coastal or CSU. The thing that has me not as high on him is that he didnt show all that well.EagleDawg wrote:John Rock I understand has left the program at G-Dubb. Re: Big South QBs 2011
The freshman QB we got from NYC is Jordan Paul...

The big transfer G-W got was Exavier Johnson, from Pierce JC in Los Angeles, after being redshirted his freshman year at Utah State. Johnson had a big time high school career at Taft and Birmingham High Schools in Los Angeles. He ranked as the #85 QB prospect in the nation by ESPN out of high school, and in the top 20 QB's in California by scout.com out of high school.
Both of these guys will push Browning big time from the start IMHO.

Re: Big South QBs 2011
Disappointed ODU and G-Webb didn't continue the series between the two schools. The Gardner-Webb game at Foreman Field last year was probably one of my favorite games the whole season. Much rather continue having an annual series with G-Webb than Campbell.g-webb1994 wrote:The freshman QB we got from NYC is Jordan Paul...

Re: Big South QBs 2011
Can't confirm if he'll continue to play QB (there was talk of moving him to CB), but Jevahn Cruz (R-FR) at Stony Brook is remarkably talented. He won the Hansen Trophy (top player in Suffolk County, previous winners = Gowins, Maysonet, Jackolski) in 2009, and is a downright remarkable dual threat.
Should he stay as QB (other SBU fans can comment to this), I'd expect him to start by next season.

You guys are supposed to visit the Webb in 2012 to complete our agreed upon home and home series. You'll have to come join us under the "Old Oak Tree."

Lucas Beatty ain't chump change and he will be looking for PT at the QB spot too. Chandler led the Bulldogs to a big W over Akron - not bad for his first significant college playing time. He is a serious football player and I am expecting big things from him this year with more of a pro-style O. It's going to be fun.
