Big South WRs 2011

Post by bjtheflamesfan »

Part 3 of my look at the Big South position by position moves to the wideouts

Charleston Southern
Nathan Perera (Sophomore) 1 Rec 0 Yds
Corvaughn Archie (Junior) No 2010 Statistics...(Transfer from Fresno City Community College)
Chase Jones (Junior) No 2010 Statistics (Transfer from Feather River College)

Coastal Carolina
Matt Hazel (Sophomore) 20 Rec 276 Yds 5 TD
Akeem Wesley (Junior) 5 Rec 53 Yds 0 TD
Adrian Sullivan Junior) 7 Rec 43 Yds 0 TD

Gardner Webb
James Perry III (R-Senior) 65 Rec 673 Yds 3 TD 2010 Big South All Conference First Team
Marquis Sanders (R-Senior) 14 Rec 167 Yds 1 TD
Richard Jules (Sophomore) 11 Rec 73 Yds 0 TD

Liberty
Chris Summers (R-Senior) 76 Rec 1081 Yards 15 TD 2010 Big South All Conference First Team
Pat Kelly (Junior) 39 Rec 635 Yds 4 TD
B.J. Hayes (R-Senior) 56 Rec 546 Yds 1 TD

Presbyterian
Michael Ruff (R-Junior) 33 Rec 487 Yds 6 TD
Patrick McKoy (Senior) 24 Rec 218 Yds 1 TD
Anderico Bailey (junior) 7 Rec 106 Yds 1 TD

Stony Brook
Matt Brevi (Senior) 39 Rec 668 Yds 5 TD 2010 Big South All Conference Second Team
Jordan Gush (Junior) 39 Rec 525 Yds 5 TD
Chris McMillan (Sophomore) 2 Rec 16 Yds 0 TD

VMI
Tracy Hairston (R-Senior) 17 Rec 242 Yds 2 TD
Trent White (Sophomore) 10 Rec 104 Yds 1 TD
Aaron Lewis (R-Junior 5 Rec 49 Yds 0 TD

Probably the team with the biggest question mark at the wideout position coming into 2011 is Charleston Southern. The only returning receiver among the 15 players who caught passes in Perera, who only caught one ball the whole year. Hazel for CCU was a pleasant surprise, making an immediate impact as a true freshman. G-W returns their first team all-conference leading wideout James Perry III (finished second to Chris Summers in receptions). Stony Brook returns their two leading receivers as well.

Ranking the units as a whole, it would look like this:
1. Liberty
2. Gardner-Webb
3. Stony Brook
4. Coastal Carolina
5. Presbyterian
6. VMI
7. Charleston Southern

Ranking the receivers individually, itd look like this:
1. Chris Summers, Liberty
2. James Perry III, Gardner-Webb
3. Matt Brevi, Stony Brook
4. Pat Kelly, Liberty
5. Jordan Gush, Stony Brook
6. Michael Ruff, Presbyterian
7. Matt Hazel, Coastal Carolina
8. BJ Hayes, Liberty
9. Patrick McKoy, Presbyterian
10. Marquis Sanders, Gardner-Webb

If nothing else, VMI will have quantity, and the August competition hopefully will improve the quality. Hairston will be the go-to guy. White has a fine upside. Besides the three that BJ listed, others to be in the mix are:

Stephawn Ross, Jr, 6'4, 215
Alec Thompson, Soph, 6'3, 195
James Rogers, R-Fr., 5'11, 185
Dexter Bridge, Fr., 6'2, 185 (turned down a scholly from NC St.)
Riley Julian, Fr., 6'2, 187
John Portee, Fr., 6'1, 178
1-AA is tops!!

Look for young Estevan Cintron to pick right up where Gerald Stevenson left off. Would have made a bunch of noise last year save for an ACL tear during fall camp. Kid is wicked fast and has very similar instincts as Stevenson does. Just remember the name.

I will make a note of it...although it remains to be seen how he does against opposing defenses

Stony Brook picked up Kevin Norrell, a washington state transfer who spent last year at El Camino junior college. He started a couple games in the pac 10 as a true frosh.

Expect to see Jackolski play some WR this year. Priore had talked about playing him there last season before Gowins's injury.

I really don't know what we will see from Stony Brook but I think there is some good talent here.

I would have to agree oceandogs. I really would not be surprised if the SBU-LU game last week of the season determines the auto qualifier for 2011

I have to agree. SBU and Liberty to determine to the Conference's representative in the play offs. Hopefully no more 3 way ties, point spreads etc, etc. this year. That was weird last season. Good Luck to all !

I feel that it is only a matter of time before Liberty starts running away with the BS Championship on a yearly basis. Coastal needs to pick of their game!

The Chants have to replace a lot...just like they did after Tyler Thigpen and all them graduated. Be interesting to see if they can keep it up or if they drop off like they did in 07

I find this doubtful for 2 reasons:
1. Many have said this about Liberty yearly and it doesn't happen. In my mind it's a combination of the recruitment issues FCS teams as a group face, and Liberty's parochial orientation. BYU on the higher tier faces similar issues. In both cases they fund well near the top of their level, are committed to the sport, and have an enthusiastic fanbase. However, parochial schools make the recruit's faith a question. As I've noted about Liberty in earlier posts - Absolutely no offense intended towards anyone at Liberty now, has ever attended Liberty earlier, or is looking to attend Liberty in the future.

2. Stony Brook is dollar for dollar matching Liberty's investment in sports. More importantly, while Liberty is one school in a bottleneck of schools in Virginia, Stony Brook is just about the only dog on the FCS level in the metro area. Our fanbase also increases yearly, as does our recruiting net. I don't really count Fordham in this analysis, as we look for different types of recruits. We also have the same aspirations to one day play FBS ball, although Liberty is clearly farther ahead of us to that end. The Chants, while not as well funded compared to SBU or Liberty, have a lot of strong backing and a wide recruiting presence. I don't any of the top 3 gaining much distance from any other in the near future. It would be wonderful to see G-Webb or VMI get it together to become more than spoilers in the conference. Presby made some great strides, it's time to see the rest of the conference do the same.

On a side note - thank you for putting all the effort into these. It gets tiring reading about the Big Sky or CAA, and not seeing any of the real BSC ;-)

While you do make a lot of great points Redwyn there is something to be said about Liberty's recruiting in the future. There are a crap load of kids who hail from Christian backgrounds that play D1 football. Off the top of my head QB's like Tebow, Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, Andy Dalton, etc. The talent is there and one day I really believe Liberty will attain guys like that. HOWEVER, that is a loooong ways down the road. Liberty does aspire to be like Notre Dame and BYU (as laughable at that may seem at times), and just because professors teach creationism in biology class doesn't mean we can't become perennially great at football. Are we going to win 6 championships in a row? Probably not. Heck, I just want to get into the friggin' playoffs haha but do I think Liberty will continue to be a top 15 team in FCS? I'm definitely biased, but I think so.

My apologies if it came out rather abrasive it's been a long day haha but yes, I see it coming down to LU, SBU and CCU every year until at least one of us switches conferences

Not abrasive at all, and some legit points. However, for the names of some of the prolific college players who would indeed have gone to Liberty had it been higher profile at the time (I have little doubt Tebow would have been at Liberty if it was in the SEC and playing that level of ball), there are an equal number who would not. Liberty has the money and support to one day be a BYU (Notre Dame has a mystique, so is quite a different story regardless of actual athletic prowess). However - like with Stony Brook's standing as a state school athletic program - time has to go by a bit first, and the school has to mature. No one cares what's being taught in the classroom. If they did, some very big name schools would shudder their D1 programs.

That very statement - that we stay a bit of a triangle of sorts - leads me to believe it will be quite a while before any of us leaves the BigSo. Clearly I see Stony Brook leaving first, if only because the Northeast football shakeup is more likely than in any other region thanks to some timely drop-downs, step-ups, and foldings. However, a part of me wants to see this rivalry build a bit. We've both chewed out the other's chance at a playoff birth. I'd like one of us to finally walk away with one. Looking forward to seeing y'ins (I'm from Pittsburgh) on Long Island this December :)

I really agree with NG and yourself as well Redwyn...this is probably be a three horse race in conference with G-W maybe as a dark horse.. I would not be surprised to see the three garnering much of the love on offense when preseason all-conference comes out next month
