Best and Worst place to play
Hijacked from AGS.
Where is the best place to play and the worst place to play in the FCS?

Depends what you mean by best and worst. Worst, I'd definitely say Jacksonville before they got their new turf. Best? I'd say ODU.

Best as in stadium/fans/general time when you are there
Worst exactly the opposite of above

Re: Best and Worst place to play
Well worst I'd still go with Jacksonville. There stadium is just a field with bleachers built into the side of hills and I'm pretty sure when we played them at their place we outnumbered their fans.
We only had football for two years so I haven't been to too many opposing stadiums. The only other stadiums I've been to in our first two years of football have been VMI, Hampton, and NC Central. VMI was pretty impressive for obvious reasons but not enough for me to say it was the best the country.
I gotta imagine in just stadium alone JMU might be one of the best places to play in a couple years once their renovations are all done.

ISU have a new field. And I always have a great time when I go down there. Fans have, for the most part, always been cool after the game.Vidav wrote:Best:

The Dome is one of the coolest places and now with a new field it will be sweet. All you Grizz fans better be ready as the last time you were in town it was a 12-10 game that was a good one. If you make the trip I will be home from Afghanistan in time for the game so I will see you in the parking lot.grizzaholic wrote:ISU have a new field. Hey, HEY NOW. I know Idaho is a little different than other places but what the fuck??? Seriously? Usually folks meet up for a beer and you want to go fist-a-cuffs? What if I just show up and bring you a beer...would that work also?

We usually eat first talk football and go to the game. No fist-a-cuffs with this guy. All are welcome Grizz included.grizzaholic wrote:Sapper wrote:

as bad as Jacksonville was, it was never as bad as the field at Rice-Totten stadium, with dry grass and potholes. They had to close the place down last year.ODUalum11 wrote:Depends what you mean by best and worst. Worst, I'd definitely say Jacksonville before they got their new turf. Best? I'd say ODU.![]()

Play? Worst has to be any place with that still uses that hard astroturf stuff.
Best place has to be Jacksonville. Nothing around you to be a distraction.

Re: Best and Worst place to play
I've seen games in Wa-Griz, Montana State, NDSU, UND, Idaho State, South Dakota State and Weber State.
So with those...
Best: Wa-Griz
Worst: UND - the Alerus Center sucks. I thought ISU was bad, but UND's is like playing in a garage.

Of course I'd rather be here...

but if I have to travel, this place has great fans, great tailgating, and memories of great games.

I've only been to three FCS stadiums - ODU, NCCU and Delaware. NCCU was pretty and the fans mostly were welcoming:

Delaware was impressive as well:

Re: Best and Worst place to play
I'm gonna toot the ODU horn here, but I do really love Foreman Field. It harkens back to an era where football stadiums were intimate environments, surrounded only by trees older than the stadium itself and people watching the game from outside the stadium. It's old school and it's pretty awesome. I think this author captured the environment at Foreman Field better than I ever could describe it:
http://www.altdaily.com/features/entert ... -fiel.htmlI loved just about everything about it...
...I loved how many parking garages there were, and in what close vicinity they were to the field. What I loved even more were the fans watching from the top of the nearest parking garage, giving Foreman Field a hint of Wrigley Field-esque mid-city charm...
...I loved the white-washed brick of the interior of the stadium. I loved how the cement rafters, in the right magic hour light, almost looked like treated pine.
I loved how close the fans are to the field. When you’re in the front row of the bleachers you practically feel like a wide-out.
As I walked around the stadium on the perfect Saturday for football and thought about this article, I wondered, is it just me? Is this place really this good?...
...I loved how when walking around the stadium I wasn’t forced through some indoor corridor; the game was always in view, the sun always on my shoulders...
...I loved that the stadium isn’t a Division 1A monstrosity. Foreman Field is intimate, almost with the ambiance of a high school field...
...The lush trees that peaked around the stands on the north side of the field...

Pre-2010 the worst facility was undoubtedly Parsons Field. I loved the trip up there, but the stadium was a disaster.Tribal wrote:I'm only writing about CAA:

Re: Best and Worst place to play
I can't address where the best places to play are, as I never played organized football. As for spectating...
Best: McNeese State had a great atmosphere when I went to a game there in '93. Great buzz in town, and it carried over to the stadium.
Worst: Norfolk State. Weird stadium that looks like it was cobbled together from leftover parts when old HS stadiums were torn down. The band played in the end zone stands as if they had no idea there was a football game going on. Just as well, as those seats are miles beyond the back of the end zone.
My wish is that no FCS team take a cue from North Carolina, where your knees hit the seat in front. (Heaven forbid if you are over five foot nine) For someone to get out mid-game to hit the bathroom, everyone between them and the aisle has to empty the row. Hideous.

Re: Best and Worst place to play
I think this is an HBCU thing 'cause it was the same at Hampton. There's absolutely no connection between the game and the band...only that they're in the same place at the same time. Actually, it's kinda annoying.TribeFanInNC wrote:The band played in the end zone stands as if they had no idea there was a football game going on.
