Anyone know what this might be about? I don't like to wait.

One of the usually accurate voices on salukitalk says he thinks they're going to announce a "blackout for cancer" game.

Well, given that the presser will consist of the AD, the HC, and a senior safety, I'm guessing that the player is unable to continue for some reason and will become an assistant. If it were disciplinary, I highly doubt they'd go through all this rigamarole; just issuing a press release would be sufficient in that case.

I would guess the EIU game by default.

Maybe, but I doubt it unless the injury is brand new. He played in the spring game and looked good.
He being Sr. FS Mike McElroy, who is on the list of top 10 FCS DBs. Last year he was pre-season AA and Buchanan watch, defensive QB; he went down for the season in week 3 with a high ankle sprain. He is also an excellent student and all around class act and would make a great coach, imo.

Definitely am a fan of the Idea however would something like this warrant it as a "big" announcement? Every team these days seem to have a "blackout, whiteout, ect" kind of game on their schedule. My vote would either be the hiring/firing of a coach or even a possible move to a new conference...SIU in the WAC?

We've seen some pretty lame "big" announcements from schools starving for attention. Is Saluki Stadium complete? Could there be an announcement about further construction?

The buzz is that it is blackout for cancer, but is something much cooler than t-shirts that has not been done anywhere else, and McElroy was instrumental in putting it together. Don't know if it has anything to do with coach Kill's cancer fund.

Definitely seems like a "blackout". Pre press conference video has a black jersey framed by the podium so if I infer correctly that's the point of this special announcement. Awesome to hear! Always love the look of a black out. Creates an intimidation factor none the less

The video wouldn't load. But while this is a nice thing to do, it's not like stuff like this hasn't been done before. For years, schools and professional teams have gone pink to support breast cancer research. Heck, New Mexico State was notorious in that even the FOOTBALL team wore pink unis one year. And if, as NDSUFREAK mentions, players will wear the names of cancer patients, that's been done, too. One need only look as far as Sac State for that. I wish we still had the video of the Mattos March, when we beat UC Davis on the last series of the game, with every player wearing the name of former coach Bob Mattos, who was dying of cancer at the time.
Not original in terms of the individual parts. But definitely unique in terms of the combo and a VERY nice gesture. And, given their alternate color schemes, a blackout definitely works.

I'm confused...the NCAA said, and those at the press conference, said this was a one time deal that hasn't been done before in college football and it has nothing to do with jersey color...those that bid on the jersey's to get the name on the back of them also get to keep the same game worn jersey...don't think NCAA has ever allowed that before? It is very original for what they are doing and the hurdles they had to get past. Pretty sure that is the big thing, individual names will be on the jerseys and those that paid for them get to keep them.

It might be unique in the extent to which they're going with this. But in the case of the pink uniforms, at least in the case of UOP, pink hoops and VB jerseys are usually auctioned off after the games with proceeds going to support breast cancer research. The shift in the SIU case is that other names will be on the jersey. Sort of a combination of the UOP case and the Sac case, where I don't believe the Mattos jerseys were acutioned.
The uniqueness of the SIU case, then, seems to not come from any individual factor but the convergence of all of them. Someone did their homework, combining a bunch of things that have worked on their own in other contexts. I hope the combination works, because cancer is a scourge that MUST be eradicated, and anything done toward finding a cure is to be welcomed.

Word is that someone was Mike McElroy.

If that is the case, it makes sense to make a big deal about a young man with brains inside his head, because there sure aren't too many of those in this world. The program does well to brag about those kinds of kids. And it's certainly a treat to hear about it, knowing that many MSM outlets (read: ESPN) will bury it so they can give us just ONE MORE piece of juicy gossip out of Columbus.

Yeah, it's nice to hear the good stuff too. I don't know anybody close to the program but a few of my student workers do . They say that McElroy is an all around class act. Likes to party, doesn't drink, does a lot of driving for those that do...
Here's the deal as I understand it: For the last home game, vs. EIU on Nov. 12, the Dawgs will wear specially designed black jerseys that the public can bid on before the game. The winning bidder can put whatever name he wants on the jersey and gets to keep it after the game. Bidding starts at $80. Sounds like the announcer will be calling the names of the jersey sponsors during the game.
100% of the money goes to area cancer efforts.
Makes my cynical old self proud to be a Saluki.

Hope it raises a ton of money. Also hope that Capt'n Cat, Clenz, Kurt Waner, Bryce Paup, & Coach Farley, et al buy up all of the jerseys.

There will be 80 jerseys, so the top 80 bids get the one time only game worn jersey. Bidding starts at $80, there are already two 5K bids and a 1K bid so I doubt I'll have the financial azz to get a jersey. I hope the Salukis in the NFL know about this, too. Having a Panther or two in there would certainly be a classy move from a respected rival. The link above has the whole story.
