Much as I hate to attract lakes and jabber's comments, I might as well post this. It looks like the ND name will be changing:

The question will be how they go about this. Does the administration impose a name by fiat, or do they hold a referendum?

This really opens a can of worms. If the administration imposes a name the student body doesn't like, they're likely to just scream the old name anyway. (And therefore keep the NCAAs nose in business where it doesn't belong.) But if they open it to a vote, they just might vote the old name back in (with the same result).

This debate is far from over.

not if they state on the ballot or whatever that any votes for the old name (or any other name that the NCAA deems inappropriate) will be nullified. Thus the winner of the vote would be whatever "appropriate" name received the most votes.

That's the alumni greeting committee for UND at the big NCAA meeting. I cant think of two clowns more appropriatly dressed! The name will change on Nov 7 when the legeslature is expected to nullify the new law requiring UND to use the offensive moniker.

Oh Happy day!!

The NCAA's obsession with this issue is ironic considerin' it's headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana.

I think someone should start a movement to rename the team the "North Dakota Nazis."

Weirdo Neo-Nazi groups could sign off their approval, and then it wouldn't be hostile and abusive by the NCAAs standard. Who cares if a group not "affected" by the name, like pretty much the other 99.99% of the country, is offended?

That's how stupid and full of shit this bit of NCAA hypocrisy really is... what a non-issue to waste time on.

Because they fought so hard was the loss of the nickname castration or humiliation? I don't believe they were spayed.

Most schools took measure of the issue and move to resolution. These guys hung on for 50 years!

Hell Im offended by Wyoming and Oklahoma State's mascot becuase it falsifies the image of the old west, not all cowboys where dressed that way, and not all cowboys where as mean and hostile as those teams mascots make them look to be. All Cowboy mascots and logo's needs to go

Its funny how the NCAA is all in fuss about attacking schools with Native American mascots and logos even if the logo isnt offensive, but they are in no hurry to attack the schools like

Notre Dame "Fighting Irish"
Portland State "Vikings"
USC "Trojans"
All the "Cowboys"
NAU and SFA "Lumberjacks"
San Diego State "Aztecs"
UNLV and Ole Miss "Rebels"
ULL "Ragin Cajuns"

And lets not forget the schools that still have Native American logo's and where NOT forced to change them.

Utah Utes
Florida State Seminoles
Illinois Fighting Illini (or however its spelled)

did I miss anyone?

The point I'm trying to make is, why must everyone interfere with everyone else's business? Live and let live.

You are the real joke and embarassment to the state of North Dakota. If UND is such a joke why to you spend so much time on their threads? I think it is because you have a need to put them down to take the sting off the fact that they have owned NDSU in football. Yeah that's it. You and your bud JBB just can not get over that little brother feeling so you keep taking shots at UND. Sad.

hey MORON. we havent played since 2003.

since then NDSU has beaten 4 FBS teams, ranked #1 twice, won 2 playoff games.

since then und has LOST to a NAIA team, havent even got close to beating a fbs team, never been ranked.

its not even a comparison. Not even close!!

UND is the marquee school of the state. 7 national championships in hockey... very impressive.

Pretty much every single person on this board who isn't directly associated with the second program in the state feels the same way... that the nickname bit is a complete non-issue that no one (outside the NCAA and among the second-tier state university fans) gives a shit about.

I really couldn't care less, except I find it highly offensive that an organization so ripe with corruption like the NCAA actually wants to push this thing further despite the fact UND is quite happy with their name. If 80% of the student body of UND was opposed to it, then fine, change it. But that isn't the case, therefore, they shouldn't have to change the name anymore than Notre Dame ought to.

This is just another case of political correctness run amok.

So the Sioux will go away, but WHO will replace the Sioux at UND?

Nokota (A ND Badlands horse)
Roughriders (Teddy Roosevelt's troops) - Should be good for condom jokes.
Firetrucks (A bisonville favor)

Other names?

No nickname....

Use it as a statement.

Or, go with the name that represents a dude that hated indians with a passion....and go with the rough riders.

UND's new name should be something to spit in the face of the NCAA. Perhaps a fake Indian name such as the UND Running Bears or UND Scalpers - the logo could be a hand holding a bloody scalp. I'm sure this would upset the NCAA sensibilities.

Cavalry has been suggested. I am not keen on the Roughriders moniker for UND, since one of the high schools in Grand Forks is already using the name.

I am also not a fan of the "no nickname" stance. Sure you are thumbing your nose at the NCAA, but you miss out on a revenue stream by rolling out a new nickname/logo.

Someone mentioned Nokota. As the ND state equine, I could live with that.

Outlaws, Rangers or Northern Rangers would also be good.

In the end, I'm just hoping that it isn't something lame.

There are a couple of threads over at SiouxSports.com. One of the threads dates back to 2007, while the other is fairly recent. There are a bunch of other names with their own threads within the Sioux Name forum, too.

no matter what happens, everyone that goes to a game (especially hockey) will be wearing the sioux logo. they will not care what so ever.

Scheels All Sports must be licking their lips with the revenue that will blow up in their face by selling off all the apparel with the logo on it...

a sioux by any name still sucks.

What's gets lost in all this nickname debate is the fact that UND has a first rate medical school that specializes in family practice. UND has produced physicians that have been sought by the Mayo Clinic as well as other top notch medical institutions. NDSU will soon have an upgraded sports arena thanks to a huge donation from Sanford Medical. Sanford’s medical team, which is NDSU’s athletic training provider, is largely staffed my UND grads. I recently attended the ceremony in the following link and I was very impressed by the future physicians that I met.

Incidentally, UND school of Health Sciences reserves 10% of their scholarships for Native American students.
