Loren Utterback will start at the “will” linebacker position for the third straight season.

2006: His career 17 tackles for loss rank him ninth (tie) in school history. He had a very solid year and was UM's third leading tackler with 103 stops, starting in all 14 contests. He had the second most solo tackles on the team with 55. He was an honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference selection.

2005: He started in the first two games and had nine tackles in those two contests, but suffered a leg injury against Oregon and did not return to action until Nov. 12 at Sacramento State.

2004: He played in all 15 games and was 12th on the team with 44 tackles.

2003: He redshirted at Montana. Former Griz All-American defensive end Ciche Pitcher chose Utterback to wear the number 37 (a number that has been passed down to several players who are from the state of Montana).

High School: Utterback was a 10-time letterman at Fort Benton High School, earning four letters in both football and track and two in basketball.

His senior season he rushed for 1,547 yards and 24 touchdowns to lead Fort Benton to a 12-0 record and the state “B” championship ( 2002). His high school football coach was Kevin Smith. Career-wise he rushed for 4,032 yards and 55 touchdowns. In football he was twice all-state, a three-time MVP pick, and a four-time all-conference selection.

While Loren ran track as a prep, Fort Benton High School garnered state championships in 2001and 2003. He was a four-time all-state performer in track and twice state MVP. He served as team captain in football and track.

Personal: He is a pre-pharmacy major. His parents are Brad and Suzan Utterback of Fort Benton. Birth date: February 26, 1984. His brother, Brandon, is a sophomore running back at UM. He was named to the Big Sky all-academic team in 2004 and 2006.

Career highs: He had 12 tackles against Cal Poly last season. He had two stops for losses against Sacramento State last season. His interception was at Eastern Washington in 2006.

Quoting head coach Bobby Hauck: "Loren is a powerful, fast linebacker. He really turned it on about mid-season in 2006. He's poised to play the best football of his career. I am really excited to see where this fall takes him."
