Week 5: Missouri Valley Conference Power Rankings

1. North Dakota State: I've been chewed out all year by fans for having them #1. Well after that 37-24 win last night, is there really any doubt? Best team in the league this year. They cruised for most of that game over a Big Ten team.
2. Northern Iowa: Cruised over a bad WIU team. UNI is very good this year.
Tie-3rd. Southern Illinois: Struggled mightily vs. a bad MSU team. Won in the final minute on a short FG. OL did not protect SIU's QB at all. Not sure they are worthy of their #13 ranking, but still a top 25 team.
Tie-3rd. Indiana State: Cruised to a 21-0 lead against YSU before holding off a big comeback by the Penguins, winning 37-35. It was not the Fouch Show, it was the Shakir Bell Show. The kid rushed for four touchdowns on nearly 260 yards of rushing. ISU is the real deal.
5. Youngstown State: YSU must address the right side of their run defense. Mich. State and Indiana State have exploited it. Adjustments at half shut down ISU, but it was too little too late. Sticking with my 6-5 prediction, win out at home, lose out on the road.
6. Illinois State: Beat SDSU 20-13. Surprised ILSU did not score more points with their potent offense, but a win is a win.
7: South Dakota State: Gave Illinois State a game, but the SDSU offense looks to be very, very weak this year. WIU and SDSU are going to struggle because of that.
8. Missouri State: Impressive showing on the road at Southern Illinois. Nearly pulled off the upset. Not a great offense, but I liked what I saw on defense. Not sure if they win more than 2-3 games this year though.
9. Western Illinois: Defeated handily on the road at UNI. They are not very good this year. Awful offense without Barr and Senatus.

Good rankings, as of right now I agree.

I would push the Salukis down to 4th or 5th. Otherwise very good rankings. You have hung in their with NDSU just like I have. Some of these folks just dont get it.

Agreed, except I would put MSU ahead of ISU and SDSU, even though they were sloppy and SIU was phoning it in for three qtrs. I think we lost some momentum with the bye week, no way last night's team puts up half a dozen plays longer than 30 yds. on Ole Miss and no way last night's team beats UNI or NDSU.

Agree 100% with your rankings and analysis GZ. I have had UNI #1, & NDSU #2 until now. I think this proves what the Bison are capable this year. Now it just comes down to if they can sustain it.

i would prolly still put UNI over NDSU. But both are clearly top 5 in the country right now. Both are pretty evenly matched and would be awesome to see a potential top 5 matchup in late october

Missouri State is going to be there at the end of the season. Brutal schedule to start the season didn't give us a chance but I think it will help us later this year and even more so next. Strong showing at SIU showed what this team can do and think we will find a way to win 4, if not 5, games this year

I see MSU beating WIU....and that's about it. Even then that game is a toss up.

Every year you, or an MSU fan, rolls your eyes at how I predict MSU to finish...and every year I'm within one or two wins and one spot in the conference rank.

The fact is Missery State is not very good.

Go through the schedule for the conference and I see one that I'd mark as a win, one or two I'd mark as maybe, the rest as no
UNI - less than 5% of a chance
ISUr - 30-35% chance
@ NDSU - less than 5% of a chance
@ WIU - 70-80% chance
SDSU - 40-50% chance
ISUb - 15-25% chance
@ YSU - 20-30% chance

Reality in the MVFC is that UN and NDSU are clearly the class of the conference, with SIU ISUb next in line but still a ways off I think. YSU and ISUr would be next, SDSU is a QB clusterfuck being resolved away from being 5th in the conference....That leaves you and WIU. After seeing 3 WIU games this year they likely won't win a game.

I could see MoSU beating SDSU at home. Way too many questions with the Jacks for me to be comfortable in saying that they will win that one. MoSU played SIU very tough this week and I was impressed. But I still they will be at or near the bottom.

I said the SDSU game was more or less a toss up...

So let's say they win both of those...that still gives them 2 wins. Who else do you see them beating, realistically, at this point?

Jacks are bad offensively. Defensively, not so much.

SDSU QB did good for his first outing. Limited playbook in 1st half, and trying to run on a good run defense team probably hurt his performance. 1 fumble and no INT, 18-32-0 passing, IMHO, Sumner will do fine. Jacks D is REALLY Thin, to a point that realigning D to fit personnel, not putting personnel to the positions where injuries created vacancies.

ISU(r) was fortunate to get the new man at QB game vs SDSU. Not certain that Redbirds would succeed vs. Jacks a 2nd time.

On the other hand..............

Re: NDSU, the case can be made that the jury is still out on them. Consider: They beat 2 bad, lower-echelon "FCS" schools (at home), then beat an impossibly terrible Minnesota team which is in the throes of major program meltdown and disarray. Beating Minnesota nowadays is like kicking a bag lady in the street as she bends to pick up a grimy Cheeto. WTF?

Northern Iowa beat Kansas State three times in a row in 1985, '87, and '89, against no losses. I used to brag about that until I realized how horrible they were back then.

Give me UNI's 2011 resume' anytime over the Herd's.

There's nothing wrong with that. It's a good thing it will be decided who is actually better on the field on October 29th :thumb: Until then, your opinion is equally valid as the next persons.

I am most interested to see who the trees beat, ndsu or uni. Stylistically and schedule wise indicates ndsu but who knows.

Wrong. I had you at 2 or 3 wins last year. PantherRob82 had you at 8....the MSU fans were on here saying that was won and MSU would win 8 games...ish....

He has every right to be after how god awful his program was for the past decade...

Still thinking maybe 2-3 wins for the Bears this year, but leaning more towards 2.

If SIU is truly a top 15 team and we play like we did against them, we will win 4-5 games this year.

Albeit at home, we beat NDSU last year 3-0 with one of the worst defenses in the history of college football. Our defense is a ton better this year and our offense will gel as the season goes on. I just hope starting 0-5 doesn't completely crush the team
