i guess i should have said would psu be ranked if they win but not necessarily if they will win. msu should win this game but psu is looking MUCH better than last yr and the game is at home. i will be watching. my team has bye week.

PSU will crack the top 25 if they win, I'm sure. We've seen non-ranked teams jump well into the polls after beating a top 10 team this year, and PSU would likely do the same.
Too bad we'll never know though.

I'm surprised their aren't getting much love from their fans. Great stadium and a pretty good team. They should be getting more fans.

Re: Portland State to be ranked on Monday?
This is an old story. 1) PSU is not a "campus" school. Its students are commuters, not dorm dwellers. Average age is 27 - most have families they go home to every day. They don't care much about PSU athletics. 2) The state of Oregon has three major university teams, Pac-12 UO and OSU - and PSU. The only newspaper in Portland, the Oregonian, puts all of its coverage on UO and OSU. FBS with its media hype matters to them; FCS does not. All other potential fans are soaked up by the Trailblazers.
Other members of the Big Sky, all of them campus schools with the captive audience (even Sac State has a campus), no doubt worry about our fan base. We do too, but there's not much we can do about it. We're building dorms but even so, out of our 30,000 students only 2500 are in dorms right now. More importantly, we're rebuilding our football team and it's doing better this year. The fans will come - more of them, at least - when the wins come.

Weber doesn't have a campus?! You've got to be kidding. I repeat, the lack of a campus and the captive audience is the key to PSU's low fan draw. I'll grant that you have similar problems with the in-state Pac-12s and the Jazz.

Re: Portland State to be ranked on Monday?
How you described PSU describes WSU almost to perfection. Weber has a campus but very few students live on campus. And Ogden is not a college town so few students live near campus. Most students commute to school and attend for the education, not the college experience. And many of the students are nontraditional (older, married, have families, etc.).frinq wrote:Weber doesn't have a campus?! You've got to be kidding. But frinq, we are getting some good publicity. We are getting good recruits from Oregon. Also, John Canzano had a great piece in the paper today about PSU football.frinq wrote:This is an old story. 1) PSU is not a "campus" school. Its students are commuters, not dorm dwellers. We've got a great place to play now. We need to get some wins to generate some buzz. It will be fascinating to see how we draw in direct competition with the Beavers this week. Oregon plays on Thursday so if we can get the casual Duck fan to come to the game, that would be great. Rain is supposed to hold up until Saturday night as well.
To answer the main question, we win, we're in I would think. It would be great to see Portland State on top of the conference heading into the middle of October.

Re: Portland State to be ranked on Monday?
Weber State has a 400-acre campus in Ogden and another 100-acre campus in Layton. More than half of the combined acreage is undeveloped. These compare to Portland State's 50-acre campus. So, there is something to the idea that Portland State doesn't have a campus. But, I tend to agree that both schools cater to a similar population, with limited numbers of under 24, full time, day students, that live on or near campus.WeberAlum02 wrote:How you described PSU describes WSU almost to perfection. Another difference is that Portland State is in the main metro area in the state, while Oregon and Oregon State are in smaller metro areas to the south. Weber State is not in the main metro are in Utah.
For the most part, the issues are similar, with respect to a fan base. I would be very surprised if there were 2500 students living on WSU's main campus.

Re: Portland State to be ranked on Monday?
The Oregonian Sport page lists sections as: Blazers Canzano Beavers Ducks High School MLB NBA NFL NCAA Pac-12 Pilots Timbers Vikings
University of Portland even precedes Portland State.
The Salt Lake Tribune has Sport section heads of: Preps College BYU Cougars Utah Utes Pac-12 USU Aggies Jazz RSL Blaze Grizzlies Bees Monson Kragthorpe
Weber State doesn't even make the cut on a link to articles about the school.
But WSU does have such a link in the Deseret News and Ogden-Standard Examiner covers WSU pretty well.

Washington State, UI, Gonzaga, AFL, WHL, Montana...The Spokesman will devote a full two page spread plus a C-1 lead story to a 1-10 PAC 12 team while giving us one article. There are as many Griz watch parties in Spokane as ours. I don't know what the numbers are now, but at one time in the early 90's we were over a 50% commuter school. We are defending National Champs and may average less in attendance than Weber and PSU. You ain't alone.
Re: Portland State to be ranked on Monday?
My god people, stop bitching and do something about it. Take a group of friends to a game, and show them how much fun they are. Wear your gear around town to show everyone that is matters to people. Get your Admin. at the school to Market your product better. Be relevant more than just every 4-5 years.
Weber gets a GREAT crowd to go to B-Ball games, why don't those same people go to Football games.

PSU has played a D2, BSC last place team and NAU. If they beat MSU, perhaps. But they won't beat MSU so this post is moot.

Re: Portland State to be ranked on Monday?
they are the same people i think that is the issue. lol. last yr we averaged 6,900 in football and 6,000 in bball. its cool that everyone comes for bball but football should be averaging well over 10,000 but doesn't. football there are 2-3,000 season tkt holders so once the snow and rain and cold comes no one comes to the games. keep an eye on attendance per game and what what happens when it snows or rains. 8,500 will become 3,700.SACCAT wrote:
