Is there one GREAT team in the FCS this year?
Brought this up in the UMass @ UDel thread after somone said that while there are 9 teams in the top 25 it is going to be interesting to see how CAA teams do in the playoffs. It got me thinking, is there one GREAT team in the FCS this year?
NDSU fans, why should I consider NDSU to be a great team? Georgia Southern fans?

Re: Is there one GREAT team in the FCS this year?
I consistently say Wofford is great much to the dismay and annoyance of everyone else....but we're in the top 5 in total offense and defense, and the offense hasn't been as good as it is now since 2008 (that team could move the ball on anyone) and the defense hasn't looked this good since 2003 (the year it pretty much carried us to the semis, not that the offense was bad). I just think Wofford is a more complete team than most of the country. Montana State appears to be head and shoulders above the Big Sky. Georgia Southern is great too. NDSU needs to improve on offense to be more complete. UNI may be great as well but I haven't analyzed them in-depth enough. The CAA champ will have to be pretty great. I'd say the rest of the pool is just good right now, with a few candidates who could become great by the time the playoffs roll around.

Won't know until the playoffs. Been years when I could have sworn the Griz would stomp azz and roll through the championship, only to see them fall in the first or second round. While some conferences look to be down, it may just be more parity and one team WILL roll through to win.
Look at Richmond in 2008.

UNI has 15 conference titles in 25 years, they should be considered.

When the playoffs are over, we can talk about the one great team, whoever that will be.ODUalum11 wrote:Brought this up in the UMass @ UDel thread after somone said that while there are 9 teams in the top 25 it is going to be interesting to see how CAA teams do in the playoffs. I would love to see the bricks shit by UNI fans if Delaware limped into the playoffs and got sent to UNI early.Gil Dobie wrote:UNI has 15 conference titles in 25 years, they should be considered.

I don't know the answer to the question but let me tell you what scares me about GSU and not this year but for the future. They have some awesome RBs and a very capable QB. They are very good, but when I think back on the talent they have had in the backfield in previous stellar years, I am not sure they have that this year (at least not at every position). To be as good as they are this year, with the possibility in future years of having that QB made for GSU's option is a scary thought.

They've got to be praying for UNH (or anyone else from the CAA).93henfan wrote:I would love to see the bricks shit by UNI fans if Delaware limped into the playoffs and got sent to UNI early.Gil Dobie wrote:UNI has 15 conference titles in 25 years, they should be considered.

The option can be one of the most effective offensive schemes in college, but if you run into a team that can defend it, you're done.OL FU wrote:I don't know the answer to the question but let me tell you what scares me about GSU and not this year but for the future. Re: Is there one GREAT team in the FCS this year?
I don't think there is. GSU, Wofford & MSU seem to be the strongest to me. The MVC has to step up in the postseason for me to give them some more respect. Maine looks good but I wouldn't think of them as dominant.

You think I don't know that. Furman used to be one of those teams. Still my concern is valid.

North Dakota is the greatest team because we play in the Great West.
Seriously I would say its either 1 of the top 4 teams in the league. It ill be a dog fight in the playoffs and whoever wins the national title will be the "Great" team. Good luck!!

What percentage of time do the playoffs (across all sports, not just FCS football) crown the best team? The answer is not very high. I'm not so sure the winner this year will be the best team in the land. And I don't think that team will be considered Great.

I could be wrong - but with homefields involved let's just say the best team in FCS wins in the end much more than "the best" pro sports teams do.CAA Flagship wrote:What percentage of time do the playoffs (across all sports, not just FCS football) crown the best team? Doesn't "homefield" go to the highest bidder in FCS?bluehenbillk wrote:I could be wrong - but with homefields involved let's just say the best team in FCS wins in the end much more than "the best" pro sports teams do.CAA Flagship wrote:What percentage of time do the playoffs (across all sports, not just FCS football) crown the best team? Higher seeds (1-5) get home field advantage regardless of bid.DSUrocks07 wrote:Doesn't "homefield" go to the highest bidder in FCS?bluehenbillk wrote:

Re: Is there one GREAT team in the FCS this year?
Speaking of playoffs, one of my biggest gripes is with regard to baseball. This is the one sport where a "different" team takes the field from one game to another because of the change in starting pitchers. Why they have a 5 game series in the first round is beyond me. This often knocks out good teams. On the flip side, the NBA does not need to go 7 games in the early rounds. 5 games is plenty.
The other thing that irks me is the champagne celebration that baseball teams have after winning in the first round. It doesn't even give them a title. They celebrate when the qualify for the playoffs (OK, 6 of the 8 teams are crowned Divisional Champs). They celebrate winning the Championship Series (OK, they are crowned League Champs). And of course they celebrate winning the World Series. Why are they celebrating with a first round win?

Correct, bids only come into play with 2 unseeded teams..TribeFanInNC wrote:Higher seeds (1-5) get home field advantage regardless of bid.DSUrocks07 wrote:

I think a lot of you guys are missing the point...he asked if there is one great team in FCS THIS YEAR. I think there are a lot of really GOOD teams in FCS but I dont think there is that one single team that is so far above everyone else.
