Colonial Athletic Association Picks for Week #11

Old Dominion @ William & Mary
Massachusetts @ Maine
Rhode Island @ James Madison
Richmond @ Delaware
New Hampshire @ Towson

Bonus/Future CAA match-up...

West Alabama @ Georgia State

My Picks
-Don't pick ODU game
-Maine, both teams coming off losses, UMass loss more embarassing since it was to Villanova...I like Maine.
-James Maidson, no way they lose third straight overall especially to Rhode Island at home.
-Delaware, kind of smelling upset in this one. UR is better than Villanova so I'd like to believe the Spiders finally get a win but I'm not sure if it will be this week.
-Towson, very close game but I like the Tigers, riding a huge amount of confidence and momentum right now...plus at home. Wouldn't be surprised though if UNH wins.
-Georgia State, still gonna pick them even though they continue to embarass themselves week in and week out. No way they lose to a NAIA team one week and then to a D-2 team the next week, RIGHT? :?

ODU 32 W&M 14 - ODU coming off it's most complete game ever. Still peaking.
Maine 27 Umass 24 - Maine at home won't lose two.
JMU 24 URI 17 - Banged up JMU still too much for Rhodie.
UR 24 DEL 21 - Upset special. Corp pulls this one out.
Towson 42 UNH 38 - Home field carries Towson in this shootout of two high powered offenses.
any team USA over GaSt in 4th qtr or overtime

I wouldn't put it past GSU to lose to West Alabama. UWA fields a good DII football program and is actually ranked higher than Georgia State in Massey's computer ratings (which I personally like more than Sagarin).

I'd like to think a D-1 program isn't that bad. If they lose this week then they are in a world of trouble once they join the CAA.

The irony is not lost on me when I, as an ODU fan say that it doesn't matter if GaST wins or loses the remainder of their games, they are in a world of trouble once they join the CAA. As much as ODU fans had to hear the same or similar phrases for the past two plus years, and as much as I resented hearing it I did not believe I would be repeating it to another teams fans (as if there are any hear to read it) myself. The contrasts between the first two seasons of our programs, by any metric, is so stark that in this case I believe that hated, scornful phrase to ring absolutely true.

As an FYI, Georgia State plays AT West Alabama this week. There's no way around sounding like I'm piling on by asking this, but has anyone else heard of a D1 team playing on the road against a sub-D1 team? Is this the best schedule they could generate?

Old Dominion @ William & Mary
Massachusetts @ Maine
Rhode Island @ James Madison
Richmond @ Delaware (Just a hunch - Towson went winless in the CAA last year and these Spiders are better than last year's Tigers; I don't see these Spiders going winless in-conference)
New Hampshire @ Towson

Georgia State @ West Alabama

I'd like to know the reasoning for this as well. Why the hell is a Division 2 team hosting a Division 1 program, especially a future CAA member? I just checked the Georgia Dome's schedule and nothing is going on Saturday.

Old Dominion @ William & Mary - The only VA team to beat ODU does it again.
Massachusetts @ Maine - Only because Maine is home.
Rhode Island @ James Madison - 38-17.
Richmond @ Delaware - UR's defense has struggled.
New Hampshire @ Towson - UNH passes for 400 yards

Bonus/Future CAA match-up...

West Alabama @ Georgia State - Panthertalk will collapse if GA St drops this one.

Playoffs start this week for JMU. Beat URI and @ UMass, they're in, likely hosting a non bye game Thanskgiving weekend. Lose to either URI or UMass, bye bye playoffs. Simple as that.

-JMU will be favored vs URI on senior day.
-A likely 6-4 JMU @ a likely 5-5 UMass on their Sednior day and last CAA game is a tossup.

Hopefully Thorpe is back starting these last 2 games. As a starter he is 7-0 in the last 7 I-AA games he has started (last 4 of 08' and 3 this yr before the 5 game suspension.

Edwards #s compared to Thorpe's this yr:
PASSING ----GP-GS Effic Cmp-Att-Int Pct Yards TD Long Avg/G
Jace Edwards 6-5 -130.8 -62--99---2 62.6 733 --3 --80 --122.2
Justin Thorpe 4-4 -150.5 -32--48---2 66.7 409 --3 --52 --102.2

They're comparable passers. But Edwards has been playing with an injured non throwing shoulder since the end of the Maine game, sprained his ankle in the 1st qtr last Sat vs UNH, and the JMU OL has been reshuffled due to losing 2 starters for the season. With that need a very mobile QB. Edwards healthy has decent mobility, but is limited now (ankle), and Mickey wants to limit the hits he takes (shoulder). Thorpe has way more and is much more of a running threat.

Richmond @ Delaware - UR's has struggled.
New Hampshire @ Towson - Towson finds a way to win @ home

West Alabama @ Georgia State - West Alabama ranked #219 nationally, Georgia State is ranked #312. Panthertalk collapses.

Thorpe The QB?

".....Jace Edwards, who has been hampered by injuries. Edwards sprained an ankle in Saturday’s loss to New Hampshire to go with the dislocated shoulder he suffered in an overtime loss to Maine on Oct. 8........

.......“We’re going to work Justin in,” Matthews said. “We’ll see how healthy Jace is with his ankle. Certainly, Jace has brought a lot to the table. We’ll just have to see where everything is. We’re going to practice both guys unless Jace just can’t practice.”

Matthews said he won’t announce a starter at quarterback until Thursday. He said he is considering closing practice to the media this week to keep his decision secret from Rhode Island.......

......While suspended, Thorpe was still allowed to practice with the team. He led the Dukes’ scout team, working against the first-team defense and running the opposition’s plays.

Matthews said he couldn’t give Thorpe the practice time as the backup quarterback, because Billy Cosh and Andre Coble needed those repetitions in case they were forced into action.

“Jace with his bad shoulder, he could’ve gone down at any time,” Matthews said. “Justin knows our offense. It’s not like we’re going to put in the wishbone.”.

Last Saturday, even with Edwards’ ankle injury limiting the play-calling, Matthews didn’t feel comfortable running the Wildcat with Dae’Quan Scott because Scott’s shoulder injury prevented the Dukes from working on that package during practice.

“I just hate to start calling plays in the game that we haven’t practiced all week, so we didn’t run that,” Matthews said.

He considered pulling Edwards for the backup, but Coble did not make the trip to Durham, N.H., and, apparently, the coaching staff doesn’t have much confidence in Cosh, a redshirt freshman and transfer from Kansas State.

“We just felt like he gave us our best chance of winning,” Matthews said of sticking with the injured Edwards. “We certainly thought about going with Billy Cosh a couple times. Because we know the mobility problems he was having in the game. But we never did.”

Quarterback mobility won’t be a problem if Thorpe plays.

Rhode Island coach Joe Trainer said his Rams will prepare both for the dual-threat attack Thorpe led early in the year and the pocket-passing scheme JMU used with Edwards behind center.

“You kind of go in with really two different types of game plans,” Trainer said Monday. “Thorpe’s more of an athletic type of kid and a guy that can hurt you running the ball. The other guy’s more of a pocket guy, not as much quarterback run.”......

W&M 24 ODU 21 - ODU still on cloud nine from clinching & I think it's hard to beat Tribe with the pass (see UNH game)
Maine 36 UMass 31 - This one could go the other way but I think Maine clinches a playoff berth this week
JMU 28 URI 21 - Even though Dirty Dukes have been a car wreck lately I think they pull off a close one at home
UD 27 UR 24 - AP & Corp both have big days but Spiders continue pattern of losing close games
UNH 38 TU 28 - UNH excels at passing at KOR, two of TU's achilles heels & JMU didn't kill UNH with the run so can TU?

I agree with these picks. Delaware ekes out a win at home to set up next week's loss to Nova.
