FBS v FCS: Gimme The Bowls

Was watching the Outback Bowl, Iowa v South Carolina. and started thinking about bowls and FCS and our irrational, pubescent hatred for their system. Here's Iowa - players, coaches, fans, all down in Tampa for a football game. All them palm trees peeking over the tops of the stands, the warm weather, cheerleaders not wearing parkas and all that shat.

Thinking of the players being down there for a few days beforehand, seein' the sites, doing a little partying, maybe getting some local trim. If they win, staying an extra night.....

The bling they get - warm up suits, hats, clothing, plaques, sponsor perk stuff.........

Parents, alumni and fans all down there taking in the atmosphere, staying at nice hotels, and it's warm.

*******************************************************

Tell you what, guys, if I was a decent recruit nowadays who had competing offers, I'd take Iowa over UNI any day. I'd take UAB over Southern Illinois because of a chance to go to a bowl. It's a dirty little secret that I used to deny, but no more. A freezin'-ass Friday night in Chattanooga, TN, can't compare, win or lose.

So there you go.

Like Iowa would offer your fatazz a schollie... ;)

If your goal to take a vacation, bowls are great.

If your goal is to win the NC, then they obviously suck more than I do.

It seems the fans get more excited for bowl games then playoff games. With playoff games, especially those on the road, fans wait and save their money in case they make it to the semis or NC. With a bowl game its the only game so all the fans come out.

Well, move the game to San Marcos (when we get our stadium redone). NC game day it was 74 here. There is a river that runs right through the campus. If you want to party you can go 30 miles north to Austin (4th or 6th streets) or 30 miles south to San Antonio (the river walk)
Yes San Marcos has bars, but I'd head to Austin

Sorry, no palm trees, but a side trip to Corpus Christi or Galveston can get you those.

They are moving this game to January in 2010, right? We just had a Jan. with a day that reached 100. Ok, so it was an oddity but still..........

(do not take this post too seriously)

Edit: it was 82 yesterday (Jan 3)

On a lighter note Cap'n'cat,

you are correct, but up to a point. for example, Oregon and portland state. playoffs or not, oregon have more fans. therefor what your saying is an illusion bc if oregon was in a "playoff" game the stadium would be PACKED, however when AND IF you see portland st. in the playoff [bc they have less fans] it seems as if everyone 'waiting' to spend their cash on a ticket to chatt-town.

Of course you do have this point; that most people wanna be at their team final/championship game. game 7, world series ect. However, that fact applies to div1a & div1aa.

Like it or not, A recruit will choose an FBS school over an FCS school any day, low-rent bowl game notwithstanding.

...and that's the truth. Beyond the scholly, school, prestige, etc...

...the prospect of being able to play in SunDevil stadium, or Ohio Stadium, or Ann Arbor, or Memorial Stadium (Rose Bowl), not too mention Rocky Top's Neyland, is a temptation beyond words. Running out into a stadium filled with 100,000 screaming fans...

Priceless.

Bobby Hauck beats out Wyoming, Utah State, Idaho and Colorado State regularly for recruits. What's THAT say?

You don't have quality FBS schools near Montana

But truth is Texas St can get recruits from UNT, UTEP, etc

But Cappy didn't differentiate between "quality" FBS schools and "non-quality". Fact is, Montana is in a pretty sweet spot, and takes full advantage of it.

I'm sure Oklahoma might argue that point about Boise State. ;)

Honestly folks, we don't get those recruits from UT or A&M or any of the other FBS schools unless something drastic happens.
We recruited Luke out of HS but he went to Utah for a year before coming to us. Our K went to Baylor for year 1 then to TxSt. Brad George was in triple A ball for 5 years then came to us because Wright was his HS (football) coach.
In this years Texas HS Fab 55 there is not 1 who has TxSt listed as an interest as even their 3rd, 4th or 5th pick.
It doesn't matter though, the current coaching staff seems to be doing a very good job going out and finding those diamonds in the rough that the FBS boys are overlooking. (Hawkins, Rivas, Dillard, Bush etc) And they are not above going out of state either. Fred Evans (Vikings) is/was from Chicago. This years Senior Ray Parker from CA. Even a guy from NJ (actually close to where I am from originally)Still a few more from our roster not from TX. Waiting to see what this years recruiting brings.

I would agree with Cap'n only if they rewarded a program with a bowl birth for more than having a mediocre season. Get to 6 wins and you get a bowl. Get 6 wins in the FCS and get rewarded with an early start to winter conditioning, as it should be. Honestly, I have only watched 2 or 3 bowl games because I have no interest in watching two 6-6 teams fighting it out for pride. May help those programs with recruiting but winning settles all. What do App, Montana, UNI, JMU have in common? They continue to win and have developed a reputation for themselves which get you recruits. Your school may be a high recruits 2nd or 3rd choice but who cares? If you land them they still can get to the pros by playing in the FCS and have a chance at a ring.

Agree with putter here and I know I'm in the minority but I have just quit watching bowl games. I watched 1/2 of the LSU/Ga. Tech game and would have watched the Utah/Alabama game had I been at home but they just don't hold any interest for me anymore. I don't want to increase the bowl ratings by just watching whatever they deem as good matchups for the public to watch so I don't watch. If they ever dicide to do a playoff I will watch them all again.

Watched the first 5 minutes of the Rose Bowl....went shopping....came back 45 minutes later and it was 31-3. THAT was supposed to be a great game. LSU/GT was supposed to be a great game. They all sucked.

I was in Dallas over the weekend and coming back we listened to the Ravens/Dolphins game on the radio. Somehow, at halftime, the announcers got into talking about the bowls and one of them said "with the bowl games 34 teams get to end their season with a win to carry over to next year" This was their justification for continuing the bowl games/system.

Gee, don't half the 120 FBS teams already have a winning last game? (discounting conference championships I guess) I sat there thinking, that's a really dumb assessment.

I have yet to watch a bowl game. I was going to watch the Fiesta Bowl but got scheduled to work tonight so I will end up watching none.

  don't you know App, it is no longer about winning and losing, it is about making kids feel good about themselves! As Stuart Smalley said..."your good enough, your smart enough, and dogonnit, people like me..... "
