As part of UND’s effort to transition away from the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo, a senior UND athletics official has circulated an email to officials of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and other organizations, advising them that UND will discontinue using the name and logo as of Jan. 1.

“As of that date, please only refer to our athletic teams as the University of North Dakota and please use the interlocking ND logo as the official logo of the UND Athletics Department,” Sean Johnson, senior associate athletics director, wrote in the email, which was circulated early this morning.

The email went to Bruce McLeod, commissioner of the WCHA, as well as leaders of the Great West, Big Sky and Western Athletic conferences, in which one or more UNDS teams compete.

Didn't the switch start today? I don't know all the details, but I thought that is what I heard. With the End all date of Jan. 1st like you stated.

Today was the first day the state law was gone. So now UND is free to transition away from the name and logo as told by the SBoHE. The transition should be mostly complete by Jan 1. Except the new hockey jerseys won't arrive til February, and merchandisers have until March to make Sioux gear(per contracts). Retailers can sell the Sioux gear until the inventory runs out (which IMO will be quick).

I've been advocating for that since this all started.

Brand yourself as THE University of North Dakota is the best thing to do....

They aren't nothing. They are THE University of North Dakota.

That means more than some stupid nickname that no one actually wants just for the sake of having one.

Huh, well whatever floats their boat. I am sure 90% of their fans will still refer to them as the Fighting Sioux. Time to get me a t-shirt before it's too late.

How about the University of North Dakota Cubs? The younger version of Northern Colorado Bears and the new doormats of the Big Sky Conference

UND nothings seems okay enough. they had a name, they don't anymore. better to have it be nothing than bulldogs or wildcats or something

In true injun fashion, Sioux fans are organizing a protest using the OWS model. Smoke signals are being used to communicate to the "tribe". One message intercepted this afternoon read: "Protest sit-in to begin tomorrow on campus. Meet at the bend in the river at dawn. Bring plenty of feathers and supplies. Also warpaint and warm clothes. Got to go, blanket on fire."

I just don't get why UND fans are so locked in on keeping the old nickname/logo. To me it's a big slap in the face of the student athletes. They are the one's that make UND sports great not the nickname. They are the ones that are on the playing field playing for the University. Sorry NDSU fans but UND hockey is the best sporting event to catch in the state/area. People enjoy it for the talent and tradition on the ice not because they are skating around with an Indian logo on. I hope they find a new nickname and logo that the die-hards will like because from the looks of it, it won't be easy.

Just wanted to ask if your University changed its logo would you be upset? To me if my team took the field as the Tigers, Wildcats, Sioux, Eagles or whatever they wanted to be I would not care as long as they play hard and represented the University well.
