How do they stack up in your mind?

I'd put them like this:

8. SHSU
7. Lehigh
6. UNI
5. MSU
4. Maine
3. GSU
2. UM
1. NDSU

I would move GSU down a ways...

other than that - pretty solid... I'm also not sold that NDSU is #1 by any more than a whisker...

8. Lehigh
7. Maine
6. SHSU
5. MSU
4. UNI
3. GSU
2. NDSU
1. UM

and yes - the pain of ranking UM and NDSU as the top two is almost unbearable. I also think Maine is pretty good - just couldn't figure out who to move down to get them higher.

Agreed. Glad to see others see Maine's strength. Those early wins clearly weren't an aberration.

GSU obviously has some defensive issues to iron out...and Maine clearly does not have those same issues...but GSU took the #2 FBS team in the country to the wire a couple weeks ago...not sure how they could move down much.

Montana looks to be playing the best football as of Saturday.

Well, they're certainly playing their best football of the past two years. Of that there is no doubt.

1. Montana
2. GSU
3. NDSU
4. Maine
5. Montana State
6. UNI
7. Lehigh
8. Sam Houston State

And just saying...if the "defense wins championships" aphorism was true then GSU wouldn't have six. :coffee:
If we don't shoot ourselves in the foot with turnovers and penalties I don't think anyone can stop our offense.

Wouldn't say they took them to the wire but they did rush for over 300 yards on the best defense in college football while averaging over 7 yards per carry. During the regular season in Southern Conference play their opponents play them every year and are used to their offense but when they get into the playoffs they're usually playing teams that aren't used to playing against it. That was the problem for Alabama. And if it was a problem for Alabama it's going to be a problem for FCS playoff opponents.

Maybe somebody will come up with a scheme and doing a good job of preparing for their offense. But one thing I think we can all agree on is that they're not going to see the athletes they saw on Alabama's defense. So they have to like their chances of being able to put up big offensive numbers on Maine or whoever else they play.

Actually.......I would have to say the Griz are the hottest team right now.

As long as the Griz are playing home games, there ain't a team standing that can bring 'em down. Road situations have been an adventure all year however (MSU being a glorious exception). If the 'Cats can take down Sam Houston State, I'll ride the Griz bandwagon all the way to Frisco!!!

Edited to actually rank:

1. Montana/NDSU (Toss up, and I hope they meet in Frisco)
2. Sam Houston St.
3. Georgia So.
4 .UNI
5. Maine
6. MSU
7. Lehigh

Three tiers I would say

Tier 1 (Favorites)- UM, NDSU, GSU
Tier 2 (Teams that could make a run)- MSU, UNI, Maine
Tier 3 (Dark Horses/EKU 2002 types)- SHSU, Lehigh

Maybe you'd just have 5. GSU won plenty of times with underappreciated but very good defenses that without those defenses, they would've won less.
