Just wrapped up on July 25. Some good information and quotes from coaches.
Sam Houston State Head Coach Todd Whitten
On The Season:
“This is our third year as a staff at Sam Houston and we’re excited about the coming season. We feel like we’re going to be a lot more athletic on both sides of the ball.”
On The Team’s Spring Preparations:
“We had a great spring and we’ve had a lot of guys involved in the summer conditioning program. We feel like we’ve got everyone working together and heading in the right direction.”
On The Team’s Defense:
“We’re definitely more athletic on defense where, in two years, we’ve not had a first team all-conference player. That’s going to change this year. One of our goals in spring was to put more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. We only had eight sacks last year, and that just won’t get it done in a league as strong as the Southland. We’re going to be better defensively.”
On The Addition Of Rhett Bomar On Offense:
“Obviously a key for us on offense will be the addition of Rhett Bomar at quarterback. He is a tremendous athlete to can really make a difference in our team. Rhett has great feet and a quick release. He’ll be hard to sack. He has the ability to extend plays.”
On The Returning Offensive Starters:
“We have four starters back in the offensive line and an outstanding tight end in Blake Martin. We lost our starting wide receivers but we have a quality group of young receivers who improved throughout the spring. It will be hard to replace a quality running back like D. D. Terry (SLC Offensive Player of the year in 2006) but we have some good young running backs returning as well.”
On The Southland Schedule:
“Like every year in the Southland, you have to be ready to play each week. It’s going to be an exciting year.”
