10 years? I give it 3. First decent FBS offer he gets, he's outta there.

FWIW, he has a son who's currently attending high school in Norfolk...plus he genuinely sounds like he's happy at ODU, says he's "living the dream"....

Everyone is "living the dream" until someone offers a 400% raise.

Also, Wilder's contract has a base salary of 200K, incentive bonuses can push it up to 350K...just wondering where does that rank among other FCS and lower tier FBS coaches...

Lastly, the public or people who pay tuition to ODU won't have to worry about their money going towards Wilder's contract...all the money that goes to Wilder's contract will be raised through donations....

It's nice to see he's being rewarded by ODU for his results.

Just try to keep it in perspective that the extension really has no bearing on whether or not he actually stays there for another 10 years.

Just as a sidenote, I don't really think Delaware or Georgia Southern fans are the ones at this point who are overly concerned about Bobby Wilder. The message should probably be directed at the schools currently in your win column for 2011.

0-2.

Coaches who sign 10-year extensions end up leaving 6.93 years early. :ugeek:

So true. It is interesting that it is incentive based. I would think that breaking the contract would be easier because the buyout would be cheaper.

While I never fall for all of the coachspeak regarding how much they love being at {insert location here}, I do believe that the Old Dominion job is one of the top jobs in the country (FCS) for a coach. If you believe like I do that about 70% of success on the field is tied to recruiting, and recruiting is tied to quality of facilities, location, conference, attendance, media attention, financial strength of the athletic department, etc., then Old Dominion is near the top. The only thing Old Dominion does not have is history. One of the only things that a coach has control of is the style of play, and I think the spread offense is a desireable style for many players.

With that said, who do you think are the top programs from a coach's perspective?

Wilder is in a good spot.

Translation here is he got a raise, in return they tacked more years onto the deal & they hope he'll continue to win & tried to make it a little more difficult for him to want to leave.

I agree with you entirely.

RE: the quoted question, I think ODU falls in the list. I'm not going to name all the names since it'll turn this thread into a clusterfvck, but there are perhaps 3 or 4 others in the CAA that I'd think are highly desirable, and probably 7-10 others around the country. ODU from a total picture standpoint I'd think is certainly a top 10 choice for an FCS level coach.

Yeah, I'm saying at least in the top 15. History is the only thing lacking, but when it comes to 17 year olds, they don't know much history of FBS schools, let alone FCS schools so maybe I'm overstating it a bit.

Old Dominion head coach Bobby Wilder was named National Coach of the Year and punter Jonathan Plisco (Newport News, Va.) was named Second Team All-American by College Sports Madness, it was announced Tuesday.

Anyone read College Sports Madness?

Ordinarily I would agree with you. Loyalty today is nothing more than a quaint concept. But I think this situation is a little different. This is not just a job to Wilder. It is his baby. He created it. Every aspect of ODU football is of his creation and I am thinking that because of that he has more than just a passing interest in it. Time will tell. For the moment though we are happy to have him inked long-term.

Coach Wilder has already had FBS offers. Get this though. ODU is already got the next stadium expansion in the works. A LARGE amount of money is being raised (for both the expansion and keeping his salary where it needs to be). Within 5 years we'll have around 40K seats (and there is a long range plan for more I suspect). Our recuiting area is tops on maybe the entire east coast (except Florida of course). I may be too confident, but in a state like Virginia, there could EASILY be 3 FBS programs.

This is one reason why I feel Coach Wilder will stay here. We WILL pay him a good salary. This isn't Delaware you know (sorry Delaware fans, I just couldn't help that one).

I wish everybody would just say great job ODU and let it go at that. But, alas, you won't of course.

Yea, I'm calling BS on that too. To double your stadium in five years, you need plans in place now...

Plus, I'm not sure how you could double that place without completely replacing both sides. The tapered shells don't lend themselves to an aesthetically pleasing upper deck, so I would think you'd either have some pretty unique architecture or just a complete rebuild like we did with the one side. That was almost a five year project from announcement to completion, and it was just one side.

The only place for quick expansion is the end zone, but that was set up as good as it could be...

EDIT: And I will say it: good job on locking him up for 10 years, but 10 years is a long time...ask Kim Kardashian...that's right, I went E! on the Football Board...

You do realize Delaware pays the highest coach's salary in FCS, right? With this total package, Wilder is getting close to Keeler's base, but nowhere near his total compensation.

And three national championship games since 2003. 11-3 playoff record. Not a bad tradeoff. Our stadium's big enough at 22K+.
