Montana the WAC is calling again

Time to renew your lapsed non-football rivalry with Boise State.

From the WAC:
DENVER, COLO. - Commissioner Karl Benson announced on Wednesday that Boise State University will return to the Western Athletic Conference as a full member in all sports except football effective July 1, 2013.

The move became necessary when Boise State announced earlier today that it was withdrawing from the Mountain West Conference to join the Big East Conference in football-only for the 2013 season. Prior to joining the Mountain West five months ago, the Broncos had been a WAC member the previous 10 years.

With the addition, the WAC will consist of 11 members for the 2013-14 season; Boise State (non-football), Denver (non-football), Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Seattle (non-football), Texas State, UT Arlington (non-football), UTSA and Utah State.

Eh, maybe if Boise State basketball was worth anything...

The Big Sky is a better basketball conference than that group, at least we have Weber St.

They aren't pplaying too shabby so far this year. The question is, can they play well all year?

Well, Weber didn't look so good tonight, but still…

RPI this early in the season really does not matter.

In a couple years it probably wont matter anyways... The rate its going if you're not going to be in a BCS conference its probably not worth it being in IA.

Really? More than half of the non-conference season is finished, and conference RPI rankings aren't going to move much once conference play starts.

Gotta look at what the lineup will be. WAC was boosted by Nevada's great run over the past few years.

WAC still has solid Utah State and NMSU programs, if they stay in the WAC

Ha, ha, ha... WAC next year will be just 4 current members from the WAC, 3 from the Southland, 1 from the Sunbelt and 1 independent. As relevant a comparison as the Big Sky against the Southland.... no?

Do you think it will be USU or SJSU? what about NMSU and Lou Tech?

C-USA now has 9 (Tulsa, UTEP, Rice, Memphis, Tulane, Southern Miss, UAB, East Carolina, and Marshall)

MWC now has Hawaii for football only and 7 full members (UNLV, Nevada, Fresno State, New Mexico, Air Force, Colorado State, Wyoming)

That makes 16 full and 1 football only. If they merge for all sports, that makes a big conference. It may be that they won't want to add anybody. 17 may be too wieldy for football. You get a division of 9 and another of 8. Cross over games aren't well matched. So, do they add a team to make two 9-team divisions. So, each team gets 8 division opponents and 1 cross over game?

I wonder if the WAC and the Sun Belt work out a deal.

Maybe 3 6-team divisions, with 5 division games and 4 crossover, 2 with each of the other divisions. But, how to do a conference championship. Maybe the two highest ranked or rated division champions.

I think they might rather lose another team (maybe East Carolina) and go to 16 football playing teams.

I think option 1 is make the MWC/C-USA merger work and only if that fails will the two conferences raid the WAC and the Sun Belt.

I-FBS could be divided into four levels:

1. 5 regional BCS conferences
2. 1 national BCS conference
3. 1 MWC/C-USA merger
4. WAC/Sun Belt/MAC

Each level pretty much covers the nation.

I think they take SJ State or Utah State.

How about Idaho back to the Big Sky? Bring SJ State or Utah State (Whoever the MWC/CUSA doesnt snatch) and NM State too and there could be a 16 team league. Split North and South into 2- 8 team divisions. 7 division games, one inter-division game, 3 OOC games and a neutral site conf championship at the end of the year for the autobid.

If Montana goes (I hope they don't) it will be Montana State that will be the travel partner. The only way Montana and Montana State would split would be if one went to the MWC and the other to the WAC. Otherwise they are glued together with no room for NDSU.

If I was Montana I would stay away from the WAC. The WAC looks like the Great West Football Conference of the FBS. Basically its Idaho and a lot of new FBS teams. I wonder if Boise would consider going back to the Big Sky for all sports but football. Seems like the MWC is the conference to go to.
