The CAA has signed a deal with NBC Sports (the former Vs. channel) to nationally televise 5 games each year beginning in 2012 through 2017. This, in addition to 13 regional telecasts on the Comcast Network.

ODU @ Towson: The Rematch

No brainer.

Nice deal - national broadcast of football games and the CAA basketball tournament. Nice deal for the CAA.

Don't you think we should put our best foot forward regarding home stadiums?
I say 2 at ODU, 2 at Delaware, and 1 at JMU (with cameras on lifts facing the new stands). :kisswink:

Yes, knowing some of the folks from both of these "institutes of higher education" I would agree with that assessment.

I believe this means that ESPN will not carry the CAA Basketball Final though. :?

Yeager just said that the league coaches are very excited about this. And that his only regret is that they couldn't get it done before National Signing Day.
No word on the financials though.

NBC Sports is currently in 75 million homes. Comcast is in 50 million homes. Not sure what to think about that. :?

But I would expect NBC Sports to grow over the next few years as they will broadcast the Olympics.

GE/NBC/Universal is obviously making a run at Disney/ABC/ESPN. :thumb: I would expect this battle for sports content to help entities like the CAA and FCS football get more coverage and publicity. :thumb:

Not a big deal - getting the semifinals televised is a decent tradeoff for that. The finals always get short changed anyway as ESPN is doing 10,000 different conference championships that week. You barely have time for the students to start rushing the court before you get whisked away to the MECAWA conference championship game. And plus, getting all the other perks (regular season basketball and football games being shown nationally) is a huge plus. I'll take that over one 2 hour block on ESPN.

Agreed. Good to get in on the ground floor with this. Hockey East had also joined this network and had their first game televised last Friday. Great telecast.

They should spread it around a little more, but they most definitely should have one from JMU, UD and ODU. Towson looks pretty good on TV as does W&M and Richmond. GaSt depends on how many butts they can put in the stands. Maine, UNH, Villanova... they can be the visitors.

Thankfully, you don't determine the line-up.

Took a quick glance at the schedule to try to predict what the 5 games will be. I took the liberty to put in some criteria, that may or may not be a factor, to eliminate games. The criteria is based on 2011 records and attendance.
- No GSU games
- No URI games
- No games at Maine or Villanova

With that, here are the weekly choices:
9/22 UD at W&M, UNH at ODU
9/29 ODU at UR, UD at UNH
10/6 UM at UD, TSU at JMU
10/13 W&M at JMU, UM at TSU, UR at UNH
10/20 JMU at UR, OD at TSU
10/27 UD at ODU, UM at W&M
11/3 TSU at UD, W&M at ODU
11/17 ODU at JMU, TSU at UNH, UR at W&M, VU at UD

Based on better "other matchups" on the same day, the above list gets paired down to this:
9/22 UD at W&M
9/29 ODU at UR, UD at UNH
10/6 UM at UD, TSU at JMU
10/13 W&M at JMU, UM at TSU,
10/20 JMU at UR, OD at TSU
10/27 UD at ODU, UM at W&M
11/3 TSU at UD, W&M at ODU
11/17 ODU at JMU, UR at W&M,

Figuring that UD, JMU and UD will get a home game, I will guess the five games will come from the following games:
(since I believe the rivalry week game will be either ODU/JMU or UR/W&M)

If ODU/JMU is the 11/17 game:
9/22 UD at W&M
9/29 UD at UNH
10/6 UM at UD
10/13
10/20 JMU at UR
10/27 UD at ODU
11/3 TSU at UD
11/17 ODU at JMU

If UR/WM is the 11/17 game:
9/22
9/29 ODU at UR, UD at UNH
10/6 UM at UD, TSU at JMU
10/13 W&M at JMU
10/20 JMU at UR, OD at TSU
10/27 UD at ODU
11/3 TSU at UD, W&M at ODU
11/17 UR at W&M

OK, now pick it apart. Its the off-season and it's the only thing worth talking about. :finger:

I am willing to bet that the JMU/ODU game will be on national TV, but guess we'll find out soon enough.

Why no games at Maine????

I'm guessing that UNH at Maine on Oct. 20 gets some pretty good consideration. :thumb:

Yep, if you want it to look good on National TV, then it should be the 3 biggest stadiums that will likely be full/close to full, and shoould be games mostly between those they project to be in the top 5 or so teams:

If the games have to be picked before the start of the season then I'd say these 5 bolded games out of the likely biggest games of the week (2 @ ODU, 2 @ JMU, 1 @ UD):

9/15: W&M @ TU
9/22: UNH @ ODU
9/29: UD @ UNH
10/6: TU @ JMU
10/13: Maine @ TU/W&M @ JMU
10/20: ODU @ TU/UNH @ Maine
10/27: UD @ ODU
11/3: TU @ UD/JMU @ Maine
11/10: W&M @ ODU
11/17: ODU @ JMU/Nova @ UD/UR @ W&M

Had to narrow the list of games to what I thought the league would be interested in showing off. I'm guessing 18,000+ fans will get pretty good consideration. The other negative factor for Maine is remoteness. I could certainly be wrong, but I'm guessing that it is easier for them to broadcast a game in the mid-atlantic region. It may not matter. Then again, if you are Yeager, would you waste the opportunity to show one of your All-sports members in a game? I'm not anti-Maine, I'm just trying to get into the league's head (business decision).

I don't think all five games will go to the three schools.
I think W&M will have a shot but the UR game may be their only opportunity. UR could get a game but the JMU game may be their only opportunity. Towson could get either the ODU or Maine game.

It's a minimum of 5 games, I'm guessing they could add more, particularly in this inaugural season if they're still looking for content or other conferences to sign on.

Typically, with the regional Comcast deals, each team is guaranteed to appear at least once, but I'm not sure I've read that obligation with respect to these national games...if that is the arrangement, URI has to be the odd team out, right?
