For three years. Downing is 3-31 in his three years so far.

Seems they like something about Scott, must be the money in lieu of wins.
One positive they are boasting a 87% graduation rate for their players which is nice.

UNC was definately more competitive this year, with losses:
3 to Texas State (Playoff team)
3 to Northern Arizona
4 to UC-Davis
7 to Weber State (Quarterfinalist)
3 to Portland State
Prior year they had a 3 point loss to Sac State, all other losses were double-digits

Small consolation. Trouble is, I believe, that they are still no better funded than a top D-2 conference team. UNC got away unharmed in the last two upgrades they did simply by the strength of their location in a recruiting haven and their (then) reputation for winning. I don't even think they had the full amount of scholarships (36) allowed when they were competing at or near the top in the NCC.
Last I knew, they were finally at 36, a far cry from the 63 their competitors are allowed in the Big Sky, and as for the winning tradition.....
There have been some major gaffes by the AD with regards to the relationships with long time alumni/players who regularly donated to the program.

They have to be offering at least 57 schollies to be a FBS counter, which they are.

They were granted an exception while they rose the money. That is why they had to back out of the Air Force game in '07, MWC dis-allowed a member from playing a team that was not up to par on scholarship levels. They played Purdue (Tiller used to employ Downing) last year, but I think the Big Ten rules were different.
Supposedly they are going to play Kansas this next fall. Maybe they will be up to 57 by then.

I always stick up for schools that wait out their coaches. UNC did play better this year and I was impressed with a few of their players when I went to the game. I hope they head in the right direction. Great stadium and campus. Hot coeds.
