The list of FCS programs that are moving up to the FBS, or studying the idea, has become unwieldy considering some schools aren't cut out for it even as they stick their chest out and thump it.
There's never been an FBS program that changed course and reclassified down to the FCS, but the University of Idaho might find the idea too enticing in the next year.
The addition of Cal Poly, UC Davis, North Dakota and Southern Utah this year is bringing the Big Sky's football membership to 13. An even 14 is coveted, but there's no other logical prospect for the FCS' biggest conference to get to that number.

Will they swallow their pride (and it's a big damn pill to swallow) and give up on the dream of ever catching up with Boise St.?
Fact is, they didn't have the facilities (football-wise, at least) to move up in the first place. 20-some years later, they still don't. Still, football turns a profit for them and manages to bail out their other sports. So, dropping football altogether wouldn't be an attractive option for the university. But admitting they were wrong to move up in the first place isn't all that attractive either, even though most everyone on the outside looking in can see that the Big Sky is where they belong.
A 14 team, two division Big Sky football conference would look pretty sweet. As would the Griz beating the Vandals in Wa-Griz again.

Their attendance dropped after Boise State left now who is going to fill the Kibbie Dome...UND? UTSA? NMSU? I see them being the next Eastern Michigan.

I think the Sun Belt is going to take Idaho and NMSU. They don't want App. State and GSU taking over football in that conference.

I dont see the Sun Belt taking Idaho, they are too far away from the rest of the conf teams in the Belt, (yes apparently that really doesnt matter anymore) But If I recall the Sun Belt was EXTREMELY happy when Denver took the WAC option, so I dont think they would be too happy to take Idaho back. They may take NMSU, but who knows.
The Mtn West has said NO to Idaho.
so Idaho has three options
1. Independance (wont last)
2. Drop Football
3. Return to the Big Sky

I think they actually dropped football in the 60's. It was the reason the BSC gave them the boot.

They dropped football in the 40's but were a non-football playing member from 1963-1979.

With the announcement of Utah State and San Jose State going to the MWC I really think the only hope for Idaho and New Mexico State is either the Sunbelt or maybe if CUSA feel charitable and decides to form a 16 team league instead of a 14 team one. Other then that, would not mind seeing the Vandals back in the Big Sky.

Sun Belt Presidents have said they have no interest in stretching the geography that will result in increased travel costs and this statement has been reiterated by Commish Benson. Maybe NM State gets a football only lifeline but SBC has 0 interests in Idalol.

Getting Desperate?

Now they are interested in upgrading thier facilities, now since they are on the verge of a life sucking abyss.

Idaho was a member of the Sun Belt from 2000-2004, but no phone call from them. They must not want Idaho back.

I kind of feel bad for them. They're Japan after the Earthquake and Tsunami. They're scrambling to pull themselves together and maintain some semblance of order, but getting beat by EWU this fall is gonna send them into full meltdown.

If they think expanding their stadium is going to get them a conference invite I think they are going to be severely disappointed. Basically there only hope @ this point is if the Big East raids the MWC or C-USA again and they need to add some teams since the MWC in particular wants to keep it @ 10 football schools.

It is time for Idaho to move back to the BSC and quit trying to be Boise.
