JMU gets 2nd 4 star transfer this offseason, & 3rd in 3 yrs

Well, in 10' JMU got their 1st 4 star transfer, from UVA, WR Quintin Hunter from Orange, VA. Hunter played at UVA as a true Fr in 09'. In 10' he started at JMU. Was decent, but not as good as the hype. Tore his achilles Spring of last yr so had to sit out this past season. Was reportedly back healthy for this past Spring, so we'll see. http://rivals.yahoo.com/virginia/footba ... nter-72261" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Now JMU will be getting Lafonte Thourogood who is transferring from Vanderbilt to JMU. Out of Ocean lakes HS, VA Beach. At Ocean Lakes Scout had him as a 4 star WR, and Rivals had him as a 3 star QB, the position he played in HS. Rivals listed offers from 10 BCS schools. http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p= ... id=4526721" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/r ... good-93296" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
He initially verballed to VT, but then signed with Vandy. Maybe VT wasn't going to give him the opportunity to play QB, and Vandy was.
According to one article I read he left Vandy for several reasons:
-Got moved to RB
-Coached who recruited him left for Illinois
-Had some family issues so wanted to be closer to home.

So will he try for QB?

Apparently so. JMU's 3rd string QB, a 3 star rFr transfer from Kansas last yr, left the team during the winter break. JMU's backup QB (who started 5 games last season as a rFr when the starter was suspended) left the team last week (this might have been one of the reasons why). JMU's starting QB, Justin Thorpe, will either be a rJr or a rSr, depending on whether he is granted a 6th yr for medical reasons (its been reported its likely).
So with the 2nd and 3rd QBs leaving this offseason, JMU was looking at Thorpe and 3 true Fr QBs coming in, all of them pretty highly touted, and one of them was going to have to burn a redshirt. Now with this Vandy transfer coming in that won't be the case. Thorpe is good, and if this Vandy transfer beats him out, well, that will just mean JMU will be even better at QB.

Thanks - sounds like JMU has addressed the QB position need

ODU announces they are moving up, and JMU beats them out for a 3 star/4 star transfer who's from right in ODU's back yard.

A) ODU has zero available scholarships.
2) Many 3/4 star recruits come out of the 757 and don't go to ODU. You got one.
III. ODU beat JMU on the field where it counts.

We'll see what happens on 11/17.

Yeah, congratulations on "stealing" a transfer that ODU didn't even go after. Nice job.

Looks like some people are a little sensitive that ODU let one get away.

Nah just correcting a false statement. In order to "beat out" somebody, the other person has to be in competition. ODU had no interest in that player, especially if he wanted to play QB.

According to what someone posted on the JMU board, the one of the WR (#1 I think) he's throwing to is Justin Hunter, now a rising Jr WR for TN-lead the SEC in yards per catch and per game before going down with an injury last year.

Irrelevant post - this thread is about JMU QB's - how the kid throws is not applicable to that position for JMU.

Honest question: Does he have a better chance of beating out Thorpe or Heinicke? Thorpe is a rising Jr (or Sr) and Heinicke is a rising Soph. JMU was the smartest choice of the two.

Actually it helps his cousin Sage Harold who also played at Ocean Lakes a yr ahead of Lafonte was already at JMU. After a PG yr at FUMA played last yr at JMU as a true Fr- basically was the 4th defensive end and finished with 3.5 sacks. Right now is slated as the #3. Wouldn't surprise me to see him start. The headline of the Harrisonburg Daily News Record after the Spring game was "Harold Stars In Spring Game DE Leads Defense, Offense Stumbles
.....Matthews described Harold as the game MVP, calling him a “stallion” as he anchored a superlative performance the defense. “The highlight of the day was, no question, the play of Sage Harold...He had two or three sacks, and we really struggled to block him.”" http://www.dnronline.com/article/spring_game" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Came in at 210, listed at 227 in the Spring. Being compared to another JMU DE who in 06' came in as a skinny bout 210 pounder, 09' Buchanan Award winner Arthur Moats.... http://www.jmusports.com/ViewArticle.db ... =205242655" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The cousin angle helped JMU land another transfer. AJ Scott, who started at LT for JMU last season as a rFr, transferred in from Marshall last summer. He had been slated for Marshall at OG last yr. One of his cousins is Dae'Quan Scott, JMU's rising rJr starting TB who rushed for over 1k yards last season.

I seem to remember ODU having a ture freshman QB who lit the world on fire last season. What transfer wants to compete with that?

I don`t think L T cares about the difference in having to beat out Thorpe or Heinicke.With the 1A schools that recruited him,I think he has plenty of confidence in his abilities.

Seriously, you can't be serious. The guy is leaving a place where his abilities, despite all the recruitment hoopla, didn't get it done. He's got really one chance to relocate and try again before his eligibility is up, so there's no way he's going to choose a location where there is a legitimate chance that he could end up riding the bench for the rest of his college career, so there's no way he goes to a place with a sophomore QB who's pretty much entrenched in the position and has the advantage of beng in the system for as long as he has. If this guy doesn't think about that and is so confident in his abilities, why isn't he staying at Vandy where his abilities will surely win him the starting spot? Confidence and common sense don't have to be exclusive of each other.

Typical GF response. He transferred because he wanted to be closer to home because of family issues, not issues related to confidence. He still has 4 years of eligibility, and his talents and smarts took him to Vandy in the SEC, which he chose from among a host of major BCS offers. Whether he lands up playing QB, RB, WR or LB at JMU, the point remains he is a superior student athlete and will be seen on the field making a positive impact. Now go ahead and try and tell us how UD wouldn't be crowing about signing a transfer of this caliber.

Spin much? Of course we would love to have a good transfer QB - who wouldn't? However, the point of the thread so far has been how JMU bested ODU and got this kid (and sure, keep on believing that he's leaving Vandy only for family reasons and not because he's going to struggle to see the field there - nothing wrong about leaving because it didn't work out for him - heck, Flacco couldn't see the field at Pitt - so why obfuscate the truth?). And again, why would this guy pick a school (ODU) that has a guy at his position who is looking to be the starter for the next 3 years, meaning that this kid wouldn't see the field until his senior year at ODU? Every other transfer seems to take into account the probability of playing time when they transfer, but you and the other poster would have us believe that that wasn't the case here and he just loved JMU so much that it trumped all else? Sure, you keep on believing whatever you dream up.
