Old Dominion University’s football team will play on national TV twice this season and Colonial Athletic Association athletic directors have agreed that the Monarchs should be allowed to play for the league’s regular-season football championship.
Getting more fed up with the CAA's boneheaded decisions every day.
I'm fine with ODU being able to get the CAA autobid, in reality if ODU makes the playoffs would've hinged very little, if at all on whether they won the league or they got an at-large.
Where the confusing decision comes from is ODU will be on 2 of the 5 NBC games? Really? What crack is Yeager & Co smoking? I appreciate the fact I won't need to leave my house to see UD play ODU now, but to have them on any of the 5 games on NBC when they're leaving after this year just shows the mentality of a league that can't think outside the state of Virginia....
Agreed, the autobid is unimportant as if you're good enough to win the CAA, or come in second or third or fourth and even fifth, then you're making the playoffs as an at large anyway. The autobid is pretty much a paper thing at this point.
But the televising of the games is the part that is head scratching. It's not like there's a lack of good venues or good teams to show out of the CAA - giving ODU two of the slots when they're about to walk out the door is just questionable at best.
Well, the NBC deal is for five nationally televised games and there's only six good venues for television: UD, JMU, ODU, Towson, GSU, and W&M. I don't think GSU will get a game because they have no fans, so if the CAA wanted to show a diversity of its venues, there's only five left for the five games. I can see your point about ODU not being allowed on television twice, but that ODU @ JMU game is going to have an electric atmosphere and could possibly be for the CAA Championship. It makes good TV.

It sounds like the CAA did not have a choice regarding the CAA Title. They voted on the way the bylaws were written. But this sucks for the rest of the league because of the opportunity that is lost to the "committed" schools to collect rings and a banner.
I'm with danefan, I think NBC could have dictated what they wanted.
UD at ODU at Noon. That blows.
Looks like Bloddy Mary's beginning at 8:00 a.m.
Hey Bill,
I thought you were coming to Norfolk for that game? Why the TV comment?

That game is a phenomenal example of CAA football at its best. I hope that Yeager has a discussion with the announcers though and helps them understand that the focus of discussion should be on JMU staying in the CAA (if they still are at that point) rather than ODU leaving.
If it was ESPN I'd say the whole conversation would be about CUSA. But with NBC I think there's a chance.

My attendance will depend on my kids fall baseball schedule.

I think the UD @ ODU game is a wise one to televise. But I intend to be there anyways, at least I'll get to record it in high def at home for further enjoyment afterwards. I also think JMU hosting ODU is a good one. I think if they had two home games televised from Norfolk it would be a little screwy. Games that are the best attended should be televised though.
I'd presume that UD hosting Towson will make it to the national game as well.
I confess to being a bit confused by the whole thing with how they selectively choose which championships to let a departing athletic department to play for, and which they don't. But whether or not ODU is allowed to play for a championship is completely irrelevant to the fact that they're on the schedule, and we need to beat them again this year.
Why is ODU allowed to play for the conference championship when UMASS was not allowed to play for the CAA crown last year ?

It'll be that much more enjoyable going 2-0 vs ODU with them being allowed to vie for the conference championship.
I have no heartburn with the decision. Have they had any major transfers decide to drop in based solely on the C-USA announcement? That would be about the only advantage they would have.

Now that the game is in Norfolk, under the control of icy-assassin Heinicke.....this game is 9 points at best. Book it.
Delaware's defense will be twice as good this year, perhaps the best in the CAA. Assuming our o-line gels during the cupcake stretch in September and Hurley masters the offense, UD will stomp ODU again. Maybe you guys can keep it to a single digit loss this time at home.
