Best Northwest FCS college town?
Well, I screwed up and only enabled 1 vote, but that will just make your vote more powerful in this poll.

I voted for Greeley since I've been there a couple times and haven't been to the others. As long as the wind is in the right direction its a great little town. Not too far from the mountains, good food, and bars. Also had a great time at the game. Met some great fans.

I heard Greeley was full of McMansions.. of course, I've never been there so I shouldn't talk. I did have a very great time in Missoula a few years back, and like the Treasure State, so that got my vote.

Also, Portland is cool, however, it doesn't seem like a "College City" in my opinion, because of other gigs in town.

I noticed a lot of votes for Bozeman so far..
Care to elaborate why it is the best college FCS town in the northwest?

If anyone votes for Pocatello they should be banned immediately.

I've been to all but Cheney and really wanted to vote for none of the above.

I voted for Portland. Love that city.
Greeley is trying its best to become a college town once again. There is a population movement that is going out west towards Loveland and I25. That's been the trend the past 15-20 years. UNC's campus though is central to Greeley and so is downtown. There were some lean years for the downtown area but some nice bars and restaurants are popping up. The city and university have combined to create Bear Awareness program for the local business' to attract students. They show up, buy a bit to eat, sign up to win prizes and discounts, etc. I think it has been around for a couple years now and is doing well. The problem is keeping students around when they graduate. We graduate a lot of teachers but our school district sucks so many don't stick around. Greeley's not a horrible town and I think its bad reputation is somewhat undeserving.

Portland isn't a "college town"?!?
How can that be when they have NINE standard colleges and universities, not to mention the usual riffraff for-profit schools like Heald?
Portland is more "college town" than most of us. The only reason I voted for Missoula is the rabid football fans they have there fighting over who gets to be in the NEZ....

I was just using the same standard Scott Van Pelt did..
He said that in order to be "the best college sports town, you have to be the ONLY show in town."
This clearly disqualifies Portland, who has a NBA program.
Scott mentioned how Boston, although having BU, Harvard, and Boston College was also disqualified, because it wasn't the "only show in town".

Fair or not, the "Van Pelt" criteria was the criteria used.

I didn't vote for them, or any, but I always have had a good time in Pocatello. Lots of fun and never met a bad person.

No kidding. Quit stopping there for gas, or anything for that matter, a few years ago. I always enjoyed walking through the Museum of the Rockies. Have debated stopping to visit on my trips through Yellowstone and Grand Teton parks but couldn't bring myself to do so. Just too much bullshit when you stop.
Getting sworn at while with a friend and his two kids, 6 and 10, in the parking lot of the museum and again while at a restaurant was the straw that broke the back. What you ask...the kids were wearing Griz clothing and we had Griz plates on the car. Not friendly banter, "Fuck the Griz you bunch of fucking pussies. Bunch of assholes. Get the fuck out of here"

It's really not that great of a time when wearing Cat gear in Missoula either. This is all about personal opinion and experiences. I've had some good and bad times in Missoula. I simply don't like the town that much. I will generally say that it would be hard to beat Missoula or Bozeman when it comes to rating college towns in the region.

I've heard Missoula is a good mix of red-necks and hippies and not much in between. Is this not correct?

Not by my estimation. There definitely seems to be more hipsters than hippies nowadays, though.

Of the cities listed, it's Portland - no contest. But I don't consider it a college town (I'm not sure if I'd consider Missoula one) in the sense that the univeristy and its students dominates the town.
That said, I gotta be a homer and vote Cheney from the towns that a true college town from your list. You never have to lock your doors, everything is very walkable, and civilzation (Spokane) is just a short hop away when you want it.

I doubt that there are more students per capita in Madison than there are in Missoula.

I don't know if that's the case. I think Boulder is a great college town and it's very close to Denver.

If he meant Cheney... Well, let's just say the town probably would not exist without EWU. Or it would be significantly smaller than it's 10k population (and that doesn't include the students who live there). It's almost a ghost town during the summertime.

I believe that all of these "best college town" threads were started because some sports writer declared Madison to be the best in the country.

Portland is NOT a college town and anyone who says different is trying to blow smoke. I went to U of O and graduate school at PSU. Portland State is a commuter school and as much as they'd like to portray themselves as else wise it's a "no sell"
