Stony Brook University will leave the Big South Conference in football after the 2012 season and join the Colonial Athletic Association, according to two people familiar with the move.

Albany, Stony Brook's longtime rival in the America East Conference for all other sports, also is headed to the CAA for football, the sources confirmed.

Schools need 75 percent of the CAA football membership to approve admission. A source said Stony Brook and Albany already have been confirmed.

The CAA would then have Stony Brook, Albany, Delaware, Villanova, New Hampshire, William & Mary, Richmond, James Madison, Maine and Towson as football members in 2013.
A news conference announcing the moves is expected next week, the sources said.

Very excited for full scholarship football and to renew the rivalry with Stony Brook.

Even better that it is happening in the CAA with our peer schools.

Very good news for the CAA. Very bad news for VMI, Presbyterian, Coastal Carolina, Charleston Southern, Gardner Webb, and Liberty. Well maybe it's good news for Liberty so they can get an easy auto bid if the Big South retains it.

I think the best outcome out of all this is a chance to play a yearly game against Albany. That is so exciting. I wanted this for a while and now we are close to having it once again. The Albany at Stony Brook game last year was exciting and I think it has a lot of potential for growth

Have to agree on the SBU -Albany rivalry. Good for both programs and probably good for our new conference as well. So Stonybrook has gone from the NEC, to Indepemdent. to the Big South to the CAA all in span of 6 years. Already looking forward to our 2013 schedule-some really great progams in the CAA.

Should we assume that the CAA is just a stepping stone to something else in a couple of years?

Yes. Stony Brook's AD has previously said that the University has future aspiration of FBS football. That's the goal. But the administration is not rushing it either. They are not skipping the steps. Lets hope the Seawolves do great this upcoming year in the BSC so that they can transition smoothly into the CAA in 2013

I've seen it made, all the way from the pig getting shot that morning.

I don't find it disgusting.

It's delicious.

SBU is still in the AE in all sports other than football. Delaware St would make a good addition. Not to mention a travel partner for UMBC. Long Island to Delaware is about 3 maybe 3.5 hours so that is do able. We will need a replacement for Boston Univ. once they leave in 2013. As long as you guys dont mind traveling to Maine and UNH .

So correct me if I'm wrong, Albany and Stony Brook were invited just for football only? While for the CAA itself I like the move I thought it would have been better if they found members for all sports since VCU, ODU, and Georgia State are all leaving and all three were full-time members. The one thing I obviously like about this move is that it gives the CAA a stronger presence in the North and will make traveling a lot easier for UNH and Maine. I still think the CAA is going to add one more full-time member if not two.

Stoneybrook is already in the CAA for lacrosse. Why not just go all sports?

Looks like Coastal needs to leave the Big South next. We don't have much competition. Liberty, Winthrop and Gwebb are about it.

I found this quote interesting...
Rhode Island is scheduled to join the NEC next year, but the additions of Albany and Stony Brook could cause the university to reconsider staying in CAA Football.
...anyone heard anything out of RI about changing their minds?

And the Big South if Liberty or Coastal leaves as they both have stated they want to.
