2012 ODU FOOTBALL OFFICIAL THREAD

So ODUalum11 has finally come out of hibernation as football season gets closer and closer. Did you guys miss me?

Anyway, the ODU Football team reported to camp today. It was a day of filling out paperwork, under going physicals as well as meeting with coaches and adminstrative staff. First official practice is tomorrow.

This year's theme? "One Team, One year, One Shot". Might as will be "National Championship or Bust".

ODU opens the season on September 1st at home vs. Duquesne who is picked to finish 2nd in the NEC. The Dukes seem to be a pretty good team so while I do think the Monarchs will win I expect it to be a competitive game. They have a good duo on the offensive side of the ball between QB Sean Patterson and RB Larry McCoy. They also have an all-american DB Serge Kona.

The rest of the OOC schedule is @ Hampton and then at home vs. Campbell. Both of which I also expect to be wins. ODU will then open CAA play at home vs. New Hampshire. I'm expecting ODU to be around 9-2,8-3 by season's end.

GO MONARCHS!!!

What was the reason for the complete disappearance on just about all message boards?

Not sure, probably because of the offseason, not a whole lot to talk about.

Monarchs first official practice was today as they practiced in just helmets. They actually wore their white helmets during practice and I know it was only one practice but they actually didn't look that bad.

Great feature piece on QB Taylor Heinicke and his father's passing:
Staying on campus over the summer isn't easy. You lose time with your loved ones, the chance to be with friends and the chance to just chill at home. But it was an especially difficult choice for Heinicke, a sophomore and ODU's returning starter.

"I wanted to be with family in the worst say," Heinicke said Monday, ODU's first day of preseason practice. "But I knew I needed to be here. This is a big season for us."

Heinicke was preparing to fly home for Christmas vacation in December when his mother called. His father, Brett Heinicke, had died of a heart attack...

...Heinicke said the last time he saw his father was Dec. 3,when the Monarchs lost at Georgia Southern in the FCS playoffs...

..Heinicke said his dad was emotional as they said goodbye that evening.

"He told me he was very proud of me," he said. "I'll never forget that."

Heinicke wasn't the only player who sacrificed this summer. It was the fifth straight summer redshirt senior tackle Chris Burnette spent in Norfolk.

"The first year I was here, maybe 20 guys stayed over the summer," he said. "Now, nearly everyone does."

Because ODU is transitioning to the Football Bowl Subdivision, this is the last year the Monarchs can advance to postseason play until 2015.

"The players here won't be able to compete for a championship" the next two years, he said. "We want to compete for an NCAA championship. We worked so hard in part because this is our one chance..."

Well shit man - I was going to make a crack about practicing in just helmets (drafty, no?) and then you had to go all Debby Downer with this piece. Hell of a QB though, and a shame that the last time he saw his dad was after the Georgia Southern game...

Looks like ODU will again have one of the best offenses in the FCS:
I’ve seen a lot of college football teams practice through the years, from Virginia Tech to Norfolk State, James Madison, VMI and the University of Virginia.

But nothing quite prepared me for the pace of football practice I saw this week at Old Dominion University. ODU’s offense is high-octane, and so are coach Bobby Wilder’s preseason workouts...

“...We try to practice at game speed every day,” he said. “It’s hard to do, but if we can come as close to that as possible, it’s a more natural transition for our players.

”Think fast, play fast,” Wilder said. “That’s a phrase the kids hear from me a lot.”

Especially when the team scrimmages. At some schools, the offensive and defensive coordinators know before practice what plays they will run. Many head coaches put the sequence of plays on a planning sheet.

But all that ODU offensive coordinator Brian Scott and defensive coordinator Bill Dee see before practice is a blank sheet. The players are also clueless as to what plays they will run.

“They don’t know what kind of position I’m going to put them in, what we’re going to ask them to do,” Wilder said. “They’ve got to be ready. Coach Scott has to be ready to call an offensive play. Coach Dee has got be able to call a defensive play. I do that on purpose."

“That’s the way it is in a game. The sheet is blank in a game.”

Should I take your word for it, or should I just take the word of the ODU beat reporter for the VP, that also happens to be an ODU grad?

Not FCS news, but ODU and VT will probably start a series in 2017:
Virginia Tech officials say they are eager to play Old Dominion University’s football team and would like to begin a series against the Monarchs in 2017, the first year they have an open date on their schedule.

“I’ve always said, if we have an opportunity to play schools within the state, we’re going to do that,” Beamer said. “That program has great potential. Old Dominion is located in a good market and the high school football there is outstanding. They’ve got a chance to recruit very good players there. We should be playing them.”

Why would Delaware provide parking passes to playoff games in which they are not playing? Did you work a deal with Towson or Lehigh? Pretty nice of your AD to give your season ticket holders a taste of what playoff football is like.

Wow, your one whole home playoff game you've had is so intimidating. :coffee:

When you can finally come within single digits of Delaware wake me up..... :tothehand:

You do realize they're moving up to a non-elite FBS conference right? That makes the above proposition an impossibility. ODU will never be in the playoffs again in their history after 2012, assuming they make it this year.

You guys are like a bunch of menstruating middle-school girls. It was a joke that was available with the parking pass comment. Calm down.

 Power conference football means first three games are warmups, or in the case of the money grabbers, a couple of warmups and a beatdown. We have Duquesne, Hampton, and Campbell.

I know the Iowa Hawkeyes aren't going to be great this year, but I'd hardly call them a warm up....
