Aren't they already D1?

This tweet lead to a HUGE thread on PN right now.
It sounds as though UNI's athletic department is looking to move FBS but hasn't been public about it (I know of very reliable sources who have said this topic has been heavily discussed within the power that be). Dannen is a VERY smart individual, he wouldn't tweet something like that without a reason. Something is up.
I debated brining this over here earlier this week, but decided against it as nothing else has been said about it.
Interesting to see it making the rounds - where did you see it?

If you want to read the thread here is the link.
I know the MAC is looking for a 14th team - and an ASU forum just did a thing saying they'd like the 14th spot. I won't if Dannen isn't working on a MAC for football only deal....or the WAC is about to poach UNI, NDSU, Montana, Montana State, and a couple others.

The WAC is dropping frootball from everything I have heard.

In theory they could still keep it if they get a massive influx of football playing members. The WAC would need a 1 year extension on their waiver but it would probably get it if it has members lined up.

Saw it on the WAC Scout board.
UNI football and mens basketball would probably be a good get. Could be a WAC pipe dream to keep the conference viable. Not sure where else they would fit. Maybe the MAC to even it out?

I doubt UNI takes their sports out of the MVC. Football only move if anything actually happens

Its too late to add teams for the 2013 season so the WAC will die as a football conference for one year. They could revive it i guess in 2014.

Yeah didn't think about that for a MAC option. That would probably be a great option if UNI really wants FBS football. MVC is too good to leave for basketball.

I know a lot of the WAC posters think this is a sign of the second coming, but my money says they go MAC, not WAC.

All of these schools move to FBS and join substandard conferences (i.e. MAC/Sunbelt) with no chance to win a national title. I know it is all about the money, but I would like a chance to win.
Most FCS move-ups are not going to be offered by the power conferences. Teams have to start somewhere to get a foot in the door, build their programs to respectable FBS levels and then go fishing for better paydirt.
FWIW - TXST 30, UH 13
and, oh yeah, we're #35 in the AP poll
(it won't last but it sure as hell feels good this week)
You gotta start somewhere.
• Texas State 16th after beating Houston at Houston. Simple – first FBS game ever, on the road, against a team that has been successful for several years now, and quite possibly the biggest upset of the week. Are the Bobcats the 16th best team in the country? No. Will they be 16th after they play Texas Tech? Only if they win. Is this an outrage? Only to people who only want the same teams in every week. To me, Week 1 is the most volatile poll of the year, and some things in Week 1 look ridiculous in Week 4. They should, if you’re paying attention at all.
Result: Don’t steal their moment. It doesn’t hurt you any.

Easy guys. First of all, any athletic dept not exploring an FBS move is not doing their job. Second, don't get too hung up on the success of your teams on the field/court in the past as being attractive to FBS conferences. There are many things that carry far more weight. Number 1 on the list is the size of the athletic budget. Next is TV market size. Then comes other things like distance to airport for basketball teams to be able to fly out on a Wednesday night after a game.........

Honestly the MAC seems like a viable option for the Panthers as geographically they are pretty close to many of the other MAC schools, could probably get away with a Football only membership and lately (this season it has been mentioned a few times) the MAC is a much stronger conference then given credit for and seem to be only getting better, curious to see how this turns out.

Right now UNI would be a top team in the MAC, with 22 more schollies they would be the top dog every year.

Isn't UNI's wrestling program heading to the MAC soon? I think I read on the ODU board that our wrestling team will be joining UNI in the MAC. Regardless, the whole school heading to the conference makes a lot of sense.

Not really.
They get the credit they deserve.

I hadn't heard we were leaving the western wrestling conference. Interesting though.
Like I said. The rest of the sports leaving the Valley won't happen

Its possible. Our AD would like to see the wrestling program go to another conference because the WWC is such a flaky conference to begin with, and the MAC is an option. From what I have heard, the AD is on board with that, the MAC is on board with that, but our wrestling coach/program isn't as enthusiastic. UNI has formally inquired about joining the Big 12 for wrestling but, for whatever weak ass reason, they don't seem to be interested (they only have like 4-5 schools right now), so idk if UNI is going to continue to hold out hope for that or not.

Here is the quote Trip read:
"Heard from 2 reliable sources this weekend that wrestling is probably headed to the MAC, along with Edinboro, Cleveland St., Northern Iowa, & Missouri."

I know there is never a clear answer for this, but would FBS help UNI's money issues or make them worse? The state now requires no general funds toward athletics, right?

No it doesn't. We are working towards that but it's not mandated.

UNI is not going to do anything at all if it is not beneficial financially. This is all about money, and what is best for UNI.

No, they wouldn't. Just because NDSU has beaten a couple of cruddy MAC teams doesn't mean that UNI (I will freely admit I am unaware of their record vs. MAC teams) is automatically a Top 4 team in that conference. NIU, Miami, Ohio, WMU, and Toledo are all fairly decent, well-run programs.
