Offensive mastermind Beau Baldwin and defensive guru Jody Sears matched wits against one another on the football field for four seasons from 2003-06.
The only difference is that they were on the same team back then.
The two coordinators from a pair of Eastern Washington University championship football teams will square off this week as head coaches of their respective schools when the Eagles open Big Sky Conference play at Weber State in Ogden, Utah. Kickoff this Saturday (Sept. 22) at Elizabeth Dee Shaw Stewart Stadium is 5:05 p.m. Pacific time.
The Eagles, coached by Baldwin and ranked ninth in this week’s Sports Network NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Top 25 poll, are 1-1 after a split of two games versus NCAA Football Bowl Division foes. The Wildcats, in their first season under Sears, are 0-3, including a pair of losses to FBS teams and last week’s 35-21 loss to No. 19 McNeese State.
Baldwin and Sears spent four seasons together at EWU working as coordinators under former Eastern head coach Paul Wulff. The Eagles were a collective 25-22 in those four seasons, including Big Sky titles and FCS Playoff berths in 2004 and 2005.
“We’ve had plenty of scrimmages and two-minute sessions against each other,” said Baldwin. “It will be fun. He’s such a great guy and I’m excited for him – just not the week we play.”
The quarterback from those title teams, Erik Meyer, is currently on Eastern’s staff, and a former Eagle defensive end, Jason Belford, is now a Weber State coach. Current EWU offensive coordinator/line coach Aaron Best and safeties coach Jeff Schmedding were also at Eastern back when Baldwin and Sears were coordinators.
Sears, a 1991 graduate of Washington State, didn’t intentionally get the Wildcats’ head coaching job. He was on Wulff’s staff at Washington State which was let go after the 2011 season, then Sears was hired by new Weber State head coach John L. Smith. But Smith bolted for Arkansas before even coaching a game in Ogden, and Sears was hired to fill the role as interim head coach.
Sears also serves as defensive coordinator at Weber State, so Baldwin sees his influence in the Wildcat defense. Likewise, the EWU head coach is still involved with play-calling for EWU’s offense, so Baldwin knows there is a familiarity that goes both ways.
“You definitely see the traces on the defensive side,” Baldwin said of watching Weber State video compared to Sears’ defenses at EWU. “He’s made some changes so I wouldn’t say it’s exact, much in the same way I’m sure he sees the changes we’ve made on offense compared to exactly what we did from 2003-06. We’re in similar boats that way. He spent four years with me and I spent four years with him, so you see some similar things, there’s no question.”

Really big game for both programs. A loss for us and Montana almost becomes a must win. A loss for Weber and their season is for all intents and purposes over.

Let's go Webes! Together we can knock the Eagles out of the conference race before it begins.

Beagles win in a blowout.
I don't think BBQ has anything this year. They looked abysmal last week.

He's not just hearing them, he's watching us from behind. Perv.

Baldwin and linebacker Ronny Hamlin had one word for the Weber’s offense: “physical.”
“Just their physical presence,” Baldwin said. “They want to outphysical you, so you have to hit them right back in the mouth.”
“They’ll try to run it down our throats,” Hamlin said. “They’re a good team, but we’re ready for them.”
Notes
Even as practice ended at about 6:20 p.m., workers were still toiling on the new video scoreboard, which is expected to be ready for the Montana game on Sept. 29. … Running back Demitrius Bronson was in full pads and is expected to play Saturday after missing the first two games with an injured hamstring. Wide receiver Greg Herd is recovered from a concussion suffered at Washington State, but defensive end Paul Ena is doubtful this week after hurting his wrist at WSU.

Meh, I don't take on these games for granted. I expect a close game, but I think will pull it off.

As a Weber Homer I have to pick......
EWU= a lot
WSU= not very much
This game is over before the 4th quarter. and so are WSU's VERY slim hopes of any post season play.
Nothing like playing for pride for the next 2 months.

Apparently they learned their lesson after 2008.

If you're EWU just hope you don't end up with the kind of injury rash McNeese State got playing Weber State. Starting running back, all American NFL prospect safety, best linebacker as well as others went down. All American NFL propsect safety's college career is over. Unsure of the others.
McNeese won the game but the game may have cost them what was looking like it could be a really good season. It was that bad. Weber State is physical.

I'll say 10. These games are always close and I wouldn't read too much into the 0-3 start.

PSU took that role last year.
Even if WSU did sneak a W on us, it wouldn't ruin our season. But considering where the two teams are at, and Baldwins knowledge of Sears' D and the fact that Sears couldn't stop our offense in practices, I'm not too worried about that happening.

Good article on Big Time Brandon Kaufman. WSU's DBs are going to be abused by this man.

Jim Allen wrote:It happened six weeks ago, during 7-on-7 passing drills in the first week of fall camp at Eastern Washington University.
The ball was almost on the turf when wide receiver Brandon Kaufman extended his 6-foot-5-inch frame, stretched his hands grass-high and pulled in the ball as his body slammed to the ground. Everyone noticed. Head coach Beau Baldwin nodded.
Brandon Kaufman was back from injury – again.
Two weeks later, fans saw it, too. During a scrimmage at Roos Field, the redshirt junior battled tight coverage along the right sideline and one-handed a lofting ball in the end zone for a touchdown.

That loss wouldn't, but two to start the conference season definitely would.

I know, the Griz are in a precarious situation right now.
