I know the board is buzzing with the season being 3 weeks old, but some rivalry games are approaching. Southern has one with Jackson State this Saturday. What I want to know is WHY you dislike your rival (was it a particular game, coach, or player? General Dislike?) Let's hear it:

Because I live in Bozeman and people drive me nuts with the constant trash talk. Land of delusion!
If I lived in Sacramento I wouldn't trash talk them about women's gymnastics, or whatever it is they dominate at

If I could find anyone here in Spokane (other than SE and kalm) who actually knows Eastern has a football team, I'd be more than happy to talk some friendly smack.

Because they're a D2 school and don't count towards wins for the playoffs.

I don't dislike Grambling as much I say I do on these boards, they're just easy targets for me. I HATE Jackson St, stemming back to when I was a little TJ, watching my team go to Jackson every other year and not score. The fact that people trash talked an 8 year old only intensified my hate.

I did sit next to a couple EWU guys at Swinging Doors who were there to watch Eags/Cougs. The anguish on their faces after the last play was priceless.

Had that been the Griz losing like that, your face would've been similar.

I dislike The Bobcat fans, not the team. When your friend's kid is wearing a Griz shirt and you are walking into the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman and some Bobcat fans think that they can swear, flip off, and harass a little kid because he is wearing a Griz shirt...they lose all respect from me and I don't ever stop in Bozeman anymore. Not for gas, for food, for anything. I avoid that place.

Classless as fuck, and if I witnessed a Griz fan doing that to a kid with an MSU shirt I'd tell them to fuck right off.

You both realize there are Griz fans who act the same way, right? I mean Pols, who is many years my senior, yells at me, flips me off (like when he was inside and I was still waiting in line outside at a eags-griz hoops game), and calls me terrible, horrible, profane names in public all the time...

I could have sworn you were 40 something, not a kid.

Nope. They don't. Don't ever challenge Griz fans. They are all knowing on matters that expand beyond football.

Kalm, next time you see Pols, ask him about his trips to Bozeman.

Well yeah, but the abuse is still hurtful...

Leave it to a humorless cat fan to ruin a good inside joke. Now my jimmies are all rustled.

Here's the basic reason why most SoCon teams hate App St.
We're the flagship program in the conference. We have a program in every sport offered by the SoCon so we rack up the conference titles in many sports. Only Furman (who has been in the SoCon 40+ years longer than us) and Chatty can compare trophy cases and what makes us the flagship over Chatty is the bread and butter sport, football. Also, we have a tendency to rip the hearts out of every SoCon football opponent in the cruelest ways.
WCU - Our oldest rival, dating back to the 30's. Every sporting event against ASU is a Super Bowl for them yet we seem to get the best of them, even at their best sports. Last spring, we won three SoCon titles within a month at Western at their three best sports. Men and Women's Track and Field both won the team titles in close contests over Western (ASU and WCU are always 1/2 in SoCon T&F) and then the most unimaginable title happened as baseball won in the second game of the final weekend series to clinch the SoCon. CofC just lost earlier in the day and App came back from 5-0 in the top of the ninth to win 6-5 and celebrate on Western's home field. The one sport Western claimed superiority over us for years and years and to win our first SoCon baseball title in 25 years that way was absolutely perfect. Also, despite the decades of dominance, they held onto their one National Championship appearance when we didn't have any, until 2005. Then this past off-season, they hired away our recruiting coordinator (who was an alum) as their new head football coach and strategically hired away three other assistants (two of them played in the 3-Peat years) and gave them job title upgrades and raises.
GSU - This rivalry is football, football and football. Two passionate, loud and sometimes obnoxious fan bases who are a lot like, yet are abrasive enough to think the other side is pure evil and is nothing like them. Two of the most decorated programs in FCS and two of the most iconic venues. Each year builds onto the lore as the series is really close. It's even since GSU joined the SoCon, but we like the count the 19-0 shutout in the 1987 playoffs/ice bowl (the only time Erk Russell was ever shutout at GSU) so we're one up in the modern era.
